Official 2009-2010 Offseason Off-Topic Discussion Thread

This thread has gotten too big and too awesome. OVERFLOW HERE

Everyone who has fancy career interests, an interesting college degree, opinions on whether Indiana Jones or Han Solo was more badass, feels like the guy they got to play James Spader's character in Stargate SG-1 was a bit too much of a sissy (or maybe not sissy enough), or can list 3 reasons why NCC-1701-E was superior to NCC-1701-D, they should discuss said topics in here.

For the record, I hate myself for being able to put those numbers down from memory.

Point is, let's attempt to keep the RockPiles and feature articles on topic, and keep discussion about whatever TV shows, movies, books, generals, and other nerdly pursuits out of there and growing and blossoming in here.

Han Solo was more badass.

Dude did the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs, has/had a Wookiee as his best friend, got the princess, slept around with a bunch of hot women in the years before he met the princess, and had three children (let’s just forget that ANakin died in a stupid plot line and Jacen went insane and died at the blade of his twin sister Jaina (who is in her 30’s and acts like a 15-year-old)). Oh, and the Millennium Falcon. ’Nough said.

Indy is the man!

Admit it…Indy is a bad ass…That fight scene in Last Crusade on the nazi tank…seriously awesome. No way could Han ever beat Indy in a fist fight…no one can!

HIs dad is Sean Connery…does it get more badass than that? Well maybe if Han Solos father was Bat Man or something…but he isn’t…Indy’s dad is James Bond…it doesn’t get cooler than that.

Indy is the better dresser…A vest and a white shirt…how lame is that…Give me the whip and that hat any day of the week!

Yeah, and they're really inaccurate

I mean Imperial Storm Troopers couldn’t anything with them. And, according to Obi-Wan Kenobi, their accuracy is so good it’s immediately obvious when they, and not sand people, have destroyed trader ships.

He couldn’t even take on Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Indy was a’scared a snakes.

The real question is this.

Could Han Solo commandeer a horse, chase down a Nazi convoy, take on a transport truck full of soldiers (including one particularly bad ass Arian looking fool) and come out of it with the loot intact.

No, he would have dropped his cargo at the first sign of imperial trouble.

You know what the worst part about "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was?

That Diana Rigg was the Bond girl. She could have been the greatest ever! She was totally wasted. Maybe it’s best that I just remember her (very very) fondly as Mrs. Peel in the Avengers and leave it at that.

Shockingly

When I watched the Stargate movie, which was after I had watched many episodes of SG1, I thought that I would like all of the characters in the movie less than the show. However, I actually like James Spader and Michael Shanks about equally. Kurt Russell versus MacGyver is a no contest though.

by controlled_slide on Nov 25, 2009 10:32 AM MST reply actions

Agreed on Spader/Shanks

but which way is the no contest on Russell vs MacGyver? Kurt Russell’s like the worst actor ever, and MacGyver is….well he’s MacGyver…

it’s like the unstoppable force vs the unmovable object

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Nov 25, 2009 10:36 AM MST up reply actions

I thought this was clear

MacGyver in a landslide. A Pujolsian landslide. It’s the unstoppable force versus, like, a duck.

by controlled_slide on Nov 25, 2009 10:37 AM MST up reply actions

making sure

I like both portrayals of the character.

Kurt Russell is such a “ok we’re making THIS ONE MOVIE with him and then NEVER AGAIN” and he was badass in the portrayal of O’Neil in the MOVIE, but can you imagine Kurt Russell trying to handle SG-1? Nobody would watch it.

Richard Dean Anderson is such a better TV actor. He’s more entertaining than Russell would be past a 2 hour movie.

by Andrew Martin on Nov 25, 2009 10:58 AM MST up reply actions

trivia

“Anderson agreed to become involved with the project if his character was allowed significantly more comedic leeway than Kurt Russell’s character in the feature film. He also requested Stargate SG-1 to be more of an ensemble show, so that he would not be carrying the plot alone as on MacGyver.”

I really need to be working right now

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Nov 25, 2009 11:01 AM MST up reply actions

more trivia, holy crap

At the Air Force Association’s 57th Annual Air Force Anniversary Dinner in Washington, D.C., on September 14, 2004, then-Air Force Chief-of-Staff, General John P. Jumper. presented Anderson with an award because of his role as star and executive producer of Stargate SG-1, a series which portrayed the Air Force in a positive light from its premiere. Anderson was also made an honorary Air Force brigadier general.

He also kinda hinted at this on the actual show

At one point, he’s spelling out his name for something and he says “O’neill, with TWO Ls. There’s another guy here with one L, and he doesn’t have a sense of humor”

Gladly sharing a name with Dexter Fowler!

by ShadowPenguin on Nov 30, 2009 2:26 PM MST up reply actions

I think my problem with the movie

Was that it was such an incredible concept, and they didn’t do all that much with it. I mean it was just a standard alien shoot-em-up on a desert planet halfway across the galaxy. Yawn. The show expanded the concept so well that I can’t watch the movie without being disappointed that they didn’t do a better job and frustrated that some of the backgrounds are different.

I just watched my first SG-U episode on Hulu the other day

and was actually quite surprised by the complexity of the character driven plots involved in it. I wondered what I had been missing in the franchise, but just looking at the synopses of SG-1 it looks like your standard sci-fi battle/alien nemesis driven plots which bore me completely so I have yet to see one, or the movie, for that matter.

I don’t know why this is for me, but the moment you have to introduce some non-human intelligence into the plot to try and represent something you are trying to say about the human condition, it just turns me off. Have the guts to do your dirty work with people. It’s so much more powerful that way, I think. I think that’s why I liked Firefly, and it’s why I liked the episode I saw of this.

Otherwise this will be a very fantasy-intensive bracket. And I’m pretty well-read, but there’s lots that I haven’t read or seen.

DS9's serialized nature justified their regularity.

The Borg in Voyager were basically a glamorized Villain of the Week. That said, they were better than the random alien species they encountered, and never heard from again. Voyager’s biggest problem is a lack of diversity in its narrative.

GREATEST MILITARY LEADERS

I’m going to nominate a leader as one of the greatest military leader in history. My criteria for this decision is based upon three things.

1.) Overcoming extreme odds to win a decisive battle.

2.) Gaining large amounts of territory.

3.) Defeating another great Military Leader in a battle of Heavyweights.

What is the revisionist argument?

Because the battle of Agincourt led to the end of the Hundred Years war. In the battle Henry V was outnumbered by 10,000 knights to only 1,500. He used the new technology of his 7,000 archers to overcome the brute strength of the knights. Although the French had 10,000 crossbowmen that should have tipped the scales in their favor. The battle was a complete victory for the English.

I'll give you the point of Mass Mobilization, but...

Greene saved Washington at Valley Forge. When his army was nearly wiped out from frostbite, hunger and a general lack of supplies. Greene was sent out to the cities and organized shipments of clothes, foods and weapons to be sent to Valley Forge. He continued supplying the Army throughout the war until he was sent to the south to organize men and fight against General Cornwallis. Greene’s actions saved the body of army and then he went on to pen in the British for the combined French/American victory at Yorktown.

The result of one's actions is what makes them great..

Greene found supplies that were being saved for states troops and convinced the states to provide them to the Continental forces. He then set up wagons and a distribution system to deliver the supplies. Remember at the time of the Revolution there was a division between states and continental rights.

After he had established a whole new Quartermaster system Greene moved on to fighting a war. A war which lead to the freedom of the first democracy in history. That seems like a greater effort than organizing some supplies and men to be sent over existing railroads

I would love to hear about it.

That time period is one that I haven’t read up on, at least not yet. Wasn’t the Normandy area considered part of Britain at the time anyway? Or am I thinking of Brittany?

Donate to charity by shopping for Purple Row Merchandise at:
Purple Row Cares

by Charlie77 on Dec 1, 2009 6:00 PM MST up reply actions

Neither, actually

Brittany was founded by native Celtic Britons escaping the Saxon invasions (hence the name) but it was an independent duchy under the auspices of the French crown (technically at least, they all did their best to avoid actually swearing to the French king). The duchy of Normandy was founded in 912 when the first Duke, Rollo, was granted the area that became Normandy (mainly so he would stop attacking, as he was a Viking. Northman became Norman). The Viking Normans subsequently became Catholic and French in the interceding years. William was the seventh duke, the only (illegitimate) son of Robert the Magnificent, and his minority was chock full of barons attempting to assassinate him and seize control for themselves. If you look at his history (which I have been doing very closely) his skill and courage are fairly astounding. Not only did he survive and live to grow into his inheritance, he beat every single challenger. You can completely see how his background gave him the capability to pull off something as audacious as the invasion of England.

Just a few examples of his career:

1035: William’s father dies, he becomes Duke at the age of 7
1037: His great-uncle, who was his regent, dies (possibly of poison)
1040: All three of his guardians are assassinated in the same year, including one in his bedchamber
c. 1043: William, at the age of 15, is knighted by King Henry I of France
1046: William is ambushed at Valognes by his rebel barons and rides 50 miles by night to escape them, then another 100 miles directly to the court of King Henry to demand his assistance
1047: William (with the assistance of King Henry) beats his rebel barons at the age of 19
1050: William forces the surrender of the holdouts
1051: William takes the castles of Domfront and Alencon (both major fortresses)
1052: William beats his uncle, who rebelled against him, and forces him into exile
1054: William defeats King Henry, who turned against him
1057: William defeats King Henry again
1064: William defeats Conan of Brittany (with the help of Harold Godwinson, after which Harold swore the oath he would come to regret…)

Which brings us to:

1066. To give you an example of his force of character, the Battle of Hastings went on for approximately nine hours. William had three horses killed from under him. At one point, the English had forced the Normans into an actual rout, but William single-handedly stopped it by ripping off his helmet (in the middle of battle!) and yelling the equivalent of “Get back there you sonsofbitches!” at them. It works. Just imagine how much different our history and language would have been if it wasn’t for that.

Not to mention after he won the Battle of Hastings, he spent six years (successfully) beating all the English nobility who challenged him, including the legitimate heir, Edgar the Aetheling, who made an alliance with King Malcolm of Scotland (himself no shrinking pansy at warfare). Not to mention how resoundingly William succeeded. He got churches and castles built, replaced the clergy and nobility, and got the Domesday Book organised and written in a year or so. He was incredibly gifted in almost every way, and not at all the guy you wanted across from you on the battlefield. He would be lenient to those who surrendered quickly, but defy him and he would destroy you.

(Disclaimer: I have already written onae lengthy historical novel on this subject and am working on another one. If for some reason you still desire to know more about this subject, email me. I will tell you everything you ever wanted to know and then some).

And should add

This led to England and Normandy being united under one ruler from 1066-1087, and then from 1106 (after a 19-year interim until William’s youngest son won back Normandy from his eldest son) until 1204, when the hapless King John lost it. And set the stage for the centuries of English/French entanglement to follow. One of my research papers this term (perhaps unsurprisingly) is on the impact of the Norman Conquest on the English language. Fascinating stuff.

National Geographic Channel has some cool stuff too..

they filmed Northrop Grumman rebuilding the Nazi’s first stealth plane, the Horton 229. They brought it to the Grumman secret radar testing facility to calculate it’s radar signature. The Grumman engineers figured the 229 would reduce the British radar detection time from 30 minutes to 2 minutes, giving the Nazi’s enough time to effectively take out the radar facility before RAF could be scrambled to intercept.

The mercury is so poisonous that it causes all sorts of nasty symptoms such as; teeth falling out, mental breakdown and paralysis of the nervous system. Eventually after enough exposure the clockmaker dies at an early age. He tells the couple that the clock is invaluable considering it probably killed someone to make it. I’m currently reading the autobiography Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs
by Major Richard Winters former commander of Easy Company of the 101st Paratroopers. Winters began his military career as a private before qualifying at OTS as a 2nd Lieutenant and then moving on to become a paratrooper. It’s easy to read into his writing of the importance of non-commissioned officers and how often they bail their troops out of a senior officer’s tactical mistake.

Publishers Weekly writes about the book, “Winters is too humble for a genre that requires a little bit of conceit.”

Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington

ASSAYE – 1803
In later years after trudging victoriously through Spain and defeating Napolean at Waterloo; the Duke of Wellington claimed the battle of Assaye, India as his finest accomplishment on a battlefield and the bloodiest he ever experienced. Outmanned and outgunned, Wellington marched his 9,500 troops into the mouth of fire against the Maratha Empire’s 100 cannon and 50,000 troops, the British had only 17 guns and fought ferociously. Wellington had two horses shot out from under him while he personally led his infantry against the center forces. Wellington’s battles on the Indian plains prepared him for his later test against the French.

LINES OF TORRES VEDRAS – 1809
After defeating Marshal Jourdan’s 46,000 troops at the battle of Talavera, Wellington’s 20,000 British troops faced a threat from the north by Marshal Soult’s army of 50,000. When Marshal Massena arrived in the East with an additional 65,000 troops intended to invade Portugal, the Duke bloodied Massena at the small battle of Bucaco before retreating behind his defensive work at Torres Vedras.

The Lines of Torres Vedras, were a technological marvel of its day. Similar to the Great Wall of China in design, Torres Vedras spanned 40 kilometers from the Atlantic to the Tagus River. It ran along two ridgelines with 108 forts, 151 redoubts, 1,067 pieces of artillery and gave defenders the ability to quickly move from behind it to reinforce against an enemy attack. The defenders used streams to flood the ground in front of the lines to reduce the enemy’s ability to maneuver. Wellington worked with his engineers to design the lines and obtained funding through his personal contacts to pay for them.

The lines were built in complete secrecy surprising Massena and his army. When the French pursued Wellington to Portugal Massena army found a string of forts, bristling with guns and a land stripped of food. Six months later when Massena finally removed his troops from Portugal his army had lost 50,000 troops by battle, disease and hunger. Only 15,000 French troops survived the winter. The British were reinforced throughout the winter and in the spring Wellington began his advance towards Waterloo.

WATERLOO – 1815
Facing one of the greatest military minds in history, Wellington was finally able to meet the French on even terms. Napolean Bonaparte’s army was made up entirely of seasoned veterans with 48,000 infantry, 14,000 cavalry and 7,000 artillery. Wellington’s forces numbered 50,000 infantry, 11,000 cavalry and 6,000 artillery. The French guns outnumbered the British guns 250 to 150 artillery pieces.

As usual Wellington used the land to his advantage by obtaining the hilltop and positioning troops in the fort-like farms within the valley. The forts allowed the British to slow down the advancing French as artillery batteries rained down upon his infantry. Napoleon’s artillery was the lifeblood of his offensive strategy and he attacked the British position with ferocity. Marshal Ney followed the artillery attack with charges by his overwhelming Cavalry numbers.

Wellington used the hilltop as a shield against the guns and formed squares against the Cavalry charges. When the French became overextended Wellington counterattacked with his own Cavalry and followed with infantry to defeat the great Bonaparte. Wellington won one of the greatest battles in history and cemented his position as the greatest military commander of all time.

Early in his career Wellington had marched a crossed the whole of India to gain land for the British Empire. Later in defense against the French, Wellington defeated every Marshal that Napolean sent against him before finally defeating the great Bonaparte himself.

OT?

Can I just take a moment to whine? I have a show going up this week — Secret Garden the musical. I’m in the dance chorus and it’s a very dance intensive show — at least four big numbers, plus moving set pieces and being onstage for ambiance (we’re also ghosts, and I have a bit part…). The shows are wednesday and thursday, and we just started tech last night. With my class schedule, this all means that between now (really starting yesterday at 4pm) and Friday at 2pm I am either in class or at the theater. All the time. Like until 12:30 every night.

Okay so I love performing but the problem is that I’m also still in classes. But with no time to read anything. So I’m basically not reading anything this week (no time) and dearly hoping I can make it all up before finals.

Aghhhh….

Funny story. My parents don’t have cable, and especially not The Mtn, so my mom and I were watching a stream online. My mom gets easily frustrated and often turns games off, and was threatening to leave during the 2nd half, but she stuck it out, and when BYU scored in OT, we both yelled really loud and did victory arms, sitting in front of the computer in the den. And then my dad came running in.

Okay, I finished making the bracket for everyone to vote. A few points:

1. Download the file here. Vote it, save it, send it to me via the e-mail in my profile.
2. You can’t just vote for someone several rounds down the line and have it automatically fill in backwards. Sorry. Also, if you change a vote for someone whom you had winning several rounds afterward and have it change forwards. Sorry again.
3. I’d appreciate it if you signed your e-mails with your screen name so I can get an idea for how you voted. I only know you as your screen names.
4. I probably left out some people that y’all wanted, including possibly some that were mentioned above. If I did, I’m sorry. I had to fill in a lot of spots on my own, and my nominations and yours got jumbled up.
5. I’ll leave the voting open for a week or so, then post the results. Enjoy.

Ruth vs. Williams vs. Pujols

Just to mix things up, let’s have a little baseball discussion in here. Namely, where does Albert Pujols rank among the greatest hitters of all time? Keep in mind that this is a discussion of purely hitting worth; defensive position and acumen does not enter in.

Right now Pujols ranks 4th in career OPS, behind Ruth, Williams and Gehrig. Heady stuff, but he hasn’t hit his decline stage yet, so it’s clear that he’s not going to pass those luminaries ever, at least in raw OPS. When you look at OPS+ (according to Baseball Reference’s calculations), Pujols drops to a tie for 6th with Mickey Mantle, adding Bonds and Hornsby to those leading him.

However, with the exception of Bonds, the hitters ranking ahead of Pujols are guys who played a long time ago. And this is the crux of the discussion. Can Pujols indeed be measured against these players? It seems, looking at OPS+, that guys like Williams and Ruth were way ahead of the game. They had something figured out that other people didn’t. Was the pitching back then as good as it is now? Or did a few hitters take a quantum leap ahead of the pitchers before they caught back up? Have both pitching and hitting been steadily improving over the course of baseball history (with a few notable outliers) or could you toss Cy Young or Christy Mathewson into a modern rotation and still have an ace? It’s a two-part argument: could Ruth and Williams have put up their gaudy numbers in today’s game (are they objectively amazing), and if you put Pujols (or any modern hitter for that matter) on the 1927 Yankees would he tear up the league like Ruth?

There’s little doubt in my mind that today’s hitters are, for the most part, better conditioned physically than they were 70 years ago. But hitting isn’t all about strength, and Ted Williams had legendarily good eyesight and reflexes (he was a fighter pilot during some of his prime years. One of baseball’s biggest what-ifs). It’s quite possible that he really could re-create a line like his ridiculous .406/.553/.735 1941 season (by the way, what Rasputin-like hold did DiMaggio have over the MVP voters? How did he win the MVP that year?).

Looking at the raw numbers that show Ruth and Willims to be head and shoulders above the field in career stats like OBP and OPS indicate to me that maybe they were just excessively talented anomalies. I don’t think anyone (including, if it were possible, them) will ever break the records set by these players. But that’s not to say nobody will be as talented as they were. They just happened to play in an era when such outliers were possible.

By the way, when I’m comparing hitting here, it’s clear to me that, while Ruth might not have been the best hitter ever, he was certainly the greatest. His hitting changed the landscape of baseball seismically, and he pretty much created the greatest dynasty in sports.

by controlled_slide on Dec 2, 2009 5:04 PM MST reply actions

For me the answer is Ruth in a landslide

He displayed a level of dominance that has never been approached by anyone except for Barry when he was all juiced up. Take Ruth’s 1921 season for example. During that year he hit 59 HR’s to lead all of baseball. The next closest was Bob Muesel with 24; can you imagine if someone today had 35 more HR’s than the next closest player? Another way to look at it is to take the other team that played in the Polo Gronds (both the Yankees and Giants played in the Polo Grounds in 1921). The Giants, who won the World series in 1921 had 75 HR’s as a team. RUTH HAD 59 BY HIMSELF!!!!! Even wilder is the thought that 1921 was not Ruth’s best season in HR’s, batting average, OBP, OPS, or OPS+

If Ruth played for the Rockies in prehumidor Coors Field I truely believe he might have hit 100 HR’s in a season.

There are no bad players today.

Or rather, the bad players today are so much better than the bad players then (partly training, diet, genes, partly simply a much bigger pool of talent) that today’s players can’t expect a whole load of gimmes like in Ruth’s day. So a supreme master will still be visibly the best, but not by the same margins they were in the past.

But

there were also only eight teams in each league in the 1920’s which means each team also had a higher percentage of top quality players from the time.

Also..

professional baseball had been around for over 50 years in Ruth’s prime. That’s as long as the NBA has been around now. In 90 years is someone going to say that Micheal Jordan wasn’t as great because the talent wasn’t as developed?

but what form had professional baseball been around in?

Athletics in general have been at a far higher standard since the foundation of the NBA, the demands from fans is greater, etc. We’ve come a long way since the 20s, and before then, baseball was very different

by Andrew Martin on Dec 4, 2009 9:18 AM MST up reply actions

That

Plus from the 1870s until the 1920s sports weren’t a huge trillion-dollar behemoth like today. Not many people could play them for a living, thus people didn’t train from age 5 to become professional athletes. The talent pool grew exponentially from probably about the ’20s or ’30s until about the ’80s or ’90s.

When Jordan showed up, after 50 years of basketball, sports had a much broader talent base than when Ruth showed up after 50 years of baseball. A better analog to Ruth in basketball would be Chamberlain (whose statistical feats will never be matched, like averaging 50 points a season) or Russell (who won 11 titles in 13 years).

by controlled_slide on Dec 4, 2009 10:29 AM MST up reply actions

See, that's the point I'm trying to make

Ruth dominated his landscape by so much. He routinely hit more home runs than other teams. For that to have happened this year, someone would have to hit over 95 home runs (and even then he would only be ahead of the Mets. To be ahead of multiple teams he would have to hit over 122). That’s so far out of comprehension that it’s almost impossible. The fact that he was head-and-shoulders ahead of everyone indicates that he was just way ahead of his era – i.e. if he played in another era he might not dominate by as much.

by controlled_slide on Dec 3, 2009 9:47 AM MST up reply actions

And if Albert Pujols played in 1921

He may have hit 150 dingers by himself. But in the Polo Grounds, 82 of them would have had to be inside the park jobs….

The first one

At least that’s what I’m saying.

by controlled_slide on Dec 3, 2009 12:02 PM MST up reply actions

Hmm

This is where it gets really tricky. I think trying to project what Pujols would do in the 20’s is even harder to project than what Ruth would do now.

A really important question I think has to be answered here is “what exactly lead to the end of the dead ball era?” The moment many people like to point to was the death of Ray Chapman when MLB started replacing balls once they were scuffed, dirty, or not longer easy to see. But the Chapman incident occcurred on August 16 1920; a season in which Ruth hit 54 home runs. This mean that Ruth’s success can only be parcially attributed to to this moment because he had unmatched success before it happened. This may suggest that 09 Pujols might have had Ruth like success during this time because Ruth proved it was possible but I’m not sure. I think a combination of several things and not just one thing lead to the end of the dead ball era but I think it’s an important question to ask when one generation of players to another.

Comparing players from different eras is so fascinating and frustrating at the same time. :-)

in 1920 the Yankees played in the Polo Grounds.

how many of Ruth’s homers were affected by this?:

The “unofficial” distances (never marked on the wall) down the left and right field lines were 279 and 258 feet respectively, but there was a 21 foot overhang in left field, which often intercepted fly balls which would otherwise have been catchable and turned them into home runs

So, responding to the other assertion you made

You think he was, objectively, the best? That in any era he would be so far above everybody that he’d pretty much have his own category?

The point I’m making is that I’m glad there was someone like Ruth back in the early days of baseball, so that there would be a giant among men to define the pinnacle of what was possible. To create records that would define baseball for years. But I don’t think that accomplishments like his are possible anymore. Which is why it’s so nice that, when such things were possible, someone was there to do them.

I personally disagree

I feel the overall talent level was worse than it is today, and yes, Ruth was a superhuman force, but the pitchers and the rest of the bats were far inferior to what we have today.

There is absolutely no way to defend this, but I am of the impression that Randy Johnson in his prime would simply own The Babe. I’m of the opinion that Tim Lincecum would make him look silly. I’m of the opinion that Pujols is better than him.

But having no way to actually verify any of this, but I agree wiht the concept that Ruth remains that superhuman character that can never be topped because there’s no way to verify anything.

by Andrew Martin on Dec 3, 2009 2:34 PM MST up reply actions

I agree

But I wouldn’t go quite that far. Perhaps the first time Ruth saw Johnson he’d look like a fool, but I think that he could adapt and be a great hitter against today’s pitchers. Not .376/.533/.849 great, but still very good.

by controlled_slide on Dec 3, 2009 3:33 PM MST up reply actions

There are few pitchers like Johnson in his prime..

Lincecum is a dime a dozen in MLB history however. I dare you to compare him to Christy Mathewson. At the age of 25 Timmy has 2 seasons of sub 3.00 ERA, at the same age Mathewson had 6 seasons and one season of 1.28 ERA.

I'm surprised people feel this way

Two things that we know have happened since this time is that average has gone down but HR’s hit have gone up by a lot. Isn’t is reasonable to think that Ruth would do the same if he played today? Maybe a .320 average while approaching 80 HR’s

He still holds one of the best ERA records in World Series history. He owns a career 0.87 ERA which is better than Sandy Koufax’s 0.97 career WS ERA!! Could Albert do this? Was the greatest HR hitter in history also the best lefthanded pitcher in history? hmm!

I don't believe it for a second

I’m not going to try and actually put numbers to what Ruth would do today, because we can’t really compare. Pitchers may not be the workhorses they used to be, but I’d make the case that as a collective group they’re all far better athletes and far more talented. Which speaks VERY poorly about the no-name batters who played in Major League Baseball back then, but I still stand by this stance.

The best we have is “Ruth was the Greatest”, and I’m ok with that. I simply refuse to believe that he would be the superhuman force he was back then if he had to face the cream of today’s crop.

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Dec 4, 2009 9:24 AM MST up reply actions

I think that the fact that pitchers were such workhorses back in the day

is indicative that the pitchers didn’t have the “stuff” that pitchers have nowadays. Yes, I’m sure that many pitchers now are “babyed” because they’re huge investments and you don’t want to risk blowing out a pitcher by overworking him on the off chance that he’s a physical freak who can take it. But with the abuse that comes with throwing sharp curves and 95+ MPH heaters, I doubt that more than a couple of pitchers could go 350 or 400 innings a season like Cy Young. Maybe none could.

And yes, maybe Young was a physical specimen whose body allowed him to throw 95 MPH for 400 innings, but it’s certainly not plausible to believe that all of the pitchers back then were.

Random off-topicness

A few months ago a sign was taped up at a bus stop near my office, and a few days later I stole it, scanned it, and submitted it to the Found Magazine website. A couple weeks ago it made one of their Finds of the Day. Here’s the link. (The part at the bottom was added a couple days later by someone else.)

How weird is that sign? What kind of person not only thinks those things but goes as far to post a sign? I’m pretty sure it’s a shooting rampage waiting to happen.

by Maria M on Dec 4, 2009 12:04 PM MST up reply actions

It's not sci-fi or British humor, but since it's fresh in my mind

I’ll suggest Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. I read it a few years ago and loved it, and am currently reading her most recent novel, Run, which is really good so far.

by holly96 on Dec 4, 2009 12:08 PM MST up reply actions

I just finished

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, as well as his Mistborn series. They were excellent. It’s more fantasy than sci-fi, but it’s not Tolkien-style high fantasy.

I’m now starting into Orson Scott Card and wondering why I didn’t earlier.

by controlled_slide on Dec 4, 2009 12:09 PM MST up reply actions

Ooh

Ender’s Game is one of my favorite books of all time (I reread it every few years, and even have a signed copy, along with a signed copy of the final book of the main series). The next book in the series, Speaker for the Dead, is also right up there. I also quite enjoy Enchantment, which is totally different than the Ender series. It’s far more fantasy, almost folklore, than sci-fi.

by holly96 on Dec 4, 2009 12:15 PM MST up reply actions

So far

Ender’s Game kind of reminds me of Starship Troopers (which is one of my favorite sci-fi novels), except that it’s about kids and it’s not as laced with philosophy. Heinlein sure liked to inject his philosophies into his books.

Anyway, enjoying Ender’s Game so far.

I know it's not the main point of the book

Orson Scott Card rocks

Those books veer waaaaaay away from the Battle Room and delve into a ton of different topics as the series goes on. I’ve read Ender’s Game at least once a year for the last 9 years.

I have to space out my rereadings a bit.

Partly because I enjoy it more when my memory is less fresh and also because I’m anal and thus have to reread the entire series. So I have to space it out a bit more.

by holly96 on Dec 4, 2009 6:41 PM MST up reply actions

Oh, so do I.

I sit down and burn through a book a day, usually. Once a year, churn out the entire series and wait until it’s about that time the following year. I don’t like change much, so when I find a series I love I tend to just stick with it.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it just never occurred to me that people that read novels in the first place (leaving out people who don’t really do much reading, here) would never reread anything.

It doesn't have to be chronological!

It’s so much more fun (IMO) to read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe without knowing how Narnia was created. So you experience it for the first time along with the kids. Then, when you read Magician’s Nephew, you get the “AHA!” factor.

So it does make sense if you read them in that order. I mean Lewis didn’t have the idea for The Magician’s Nephew before he wrote The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. So you don’t need to have read The Magician’s Nephew to understand it.

by controlled_slide on Dec 5, 2009 7:36 PM MST up reply actions

no, you don't

but it depends on how you like to read things. I’d prefer to have everything built properly up, you start at the bottom and work your way to the top, so that I know what everything means and such. It is kind of fun to say “ahhhhhh so THAT’S how it happened”

I’ve always known the proper order and all that, I don’t remember how I first visited Narnia, so re-reading them, it doesn’t really make a difference anymore.

Everything about the guy dominates.

I was appalled at his role in the Wolvie Origins movie because outside of his one scene, which he of course kicked major ass in, he was a glorified chauffeur.

His appearance in video games is always met with a huge reception because he’s super popular without being crammed down our throat ALL THE TIME (Sup Wolverine). He got tossed into Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 despite not being ANYWHERE near the Civil War storyline, which the game used, because you toss him into a video game and he’s almost always in a party because he’s just that powerful.

You are defff right though that he doesn’t get a lot of play, which is something I also like about him. I’m the classic “dislikes stuff when it gets popular” type of guy but Gambit is a character who, while not needing to be a main character, is absolutely an intriguing even guy to have around in a lot of books.

I’m still hoping for a Gambit spin-off movie but because of the way they slapped the character in the face in Origins, I doubt it happens. Of course, that isn’t stopping them from making a Deadpool movie even after making him damn near the ultimate supa pimp in that failfest of a film. Gambit gets his own movie and they don’t screw it up, people should come out of it embarrassed they voted for freaking TMNT and/or Spider-Man over him.

The guy who played Gambit in Origins, Taylor Kitsch, signed a three picture deal to work as Gambit so if they do decide to ever make the spin-off movie, he would presumably be the guy to star in it. At some point it becomes hard to judge all the different characters against each other, especially in an undefined criteria set, because of guys with superpowers against guys without. How can you accurately put Wolverine vs. Indiana Jones next to each other?

This isn’t a knock AT ALL against the entire exercise. It’s intensely fun and I loved filling my bracket out and could talk about all these different match-ups all day, especially if they involve Gambit. ;D

define beating

because Superman is the most boring superhero ever.

Superman vs. Anyone = Superman wins.

How, you ask?

Superman flings Earth into the sun. Fight over.

Against the Death Star? Superman flings Death Star into the sun. Fight over.

Lex Luthor has kryptonite? Superman flies somewhere else to get a grip on earth, flings into the sun. Fight over.

HS football championship

I’m listening on KOA’s website to my high school (Pomona) trying to beat Mullen in the state football championships. The last time they were in the championship game was my freshman year, 17 years ago. I was there with the band. It was a blizzard, and I’ve never been that cold in my life. And Pomona lost. It sucked.

So now, Pomona has the ball with 2:30 left, Pomona down 3. Go Pomona!

The problem is...

Football is such a demanding sport that it’s almost impossible to have a large tournament with lots of games. I could possibly see the top 8 ranked teams in the nation in a playoff, but that would be it. And I can imagine that the 9th ranked team would still cry about it.

by mkorpal on Dec 6, 2009 12:42 PM MST up reply actions

I agree that you can probably only have an eight team playoff.

I would still love that though because it solves the problem of teams that win every game being denied a chance. Yeah the 9th ranked team would still complain but at least they will have a loss or two which I consider totally different than a team going undefeated being shut out.

I have a few comments about this now that the voting is done

Overall, I don’t think the seeding mattered too much, but there were a couple of characters that probably should have been seeded higher. Ripley, for one (I must confess I’ve only seen Alien, and it was a while ago), although nobody nominated her. Also Jason Bourne got the most first place votes, which surprised me. I read The Bourne Identity and part of The Bourne Supremacy (I stopped reading because I had to go out of town on business, gave it back to the library and never remembered to pick it up again) and liked them just fine, but I never thought that he was that popular a character. The movies were decent, but the camera work in the second and third ones made me want to throw up.

I also probably should have seeded some lower, especially Spider-Man. I seeded partially according to my personal biases, partially based on my perception of where I think other people would put them (thus Superman was a 1 seed even though I don’t care for him much).

As to the outliers, La Femme Nikita got 80 points to place in a tie for 44th, even though she only advanced past the first round on one bracket. Similarly, Number 6 from Battlestar Galactica made it all the way up to 30th although she advanced in only one person’s bracket. Also, SDTF and Jabberwocky’s personal biases (discussed above) propelled the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Gambit into 14th and 15th respectively (a mere 10 points apart) despite not garnering much support outside those two.

Finally, no complaining about characters left out if you didn’t nominate them! I had to come up with a ton of the field on my own, and thus it reflects my disposition toward fantasy and sci-fi.

Overall, I think it was a fun exercise. Thanks to everyone who voted. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Something about Bourne

As a geezer, I think a part of the Bourne baddassitude appeal can be traced right back to the books, in the sense that Ludlum’s books were written long before characters like John Mclane and MacGuyver ever saw the light of day. I think the first two books were written in the 70s, when people just weren’t that badass.

Such that all the John Mclane’s are just trying to follow in his footsteps.

That's an interesting point

I’m not a geezer, but I certainly have geezerish points of view about many things, especially when it comes to things that were really revolutionary when they first came out. Sure, Psycho doesn’t seem crazy and scary when you watch it now, but it blew everyone’s mind when it first came out. The only reason that the kids nowadays can figure out the twist when they see it is because everyone copied it afterward. I didn’t realize that Ludlum’s books were popular enough back in the day to warrant them being considered major influences for future characters of that type. That being said, Ian Fleming was writing James Bond novels well before Ludlum made Bourne.

Nature Lover's discussion

Today I went out looking for a Swainson’s Hawk that lives in the area. There’s a pair of mates that live nearby and I was afraid the recent snow and low temperatures had driven them off.

My daughter went with me as we hiked to it’s hunting perch. But unfortunately there was no sign of the male or female.

When we were driving away however, a flash of black caught the corner of my eye and I saw the male soaring over the next valley over. We saw two Peregrine Falcons as well, but they flew away before my camera was ready. I should’ve changed batteries before I went. Oh well, now I know where to find them for next time.

I have a problem.

I can’t stop buying books, new or used. I’ve averaged buying 1.3 (or so) books a week this year. I have no space to put the last few. Books meet floor. Floor meet books. That’s just counting the history books. I’ve not taken into account Star Wars books and comics and other miscellaneous book purchases.
