WE SHOULD TRADE FOR - Compilation thread!
We all have trademaster ambitions. We all think we understand other clubs' depth and organizational needs. Some of us do, some of us don't. Some of us think Alan Johnson is a legit "prospect".
But whether our ideas are unfounded, based entirely in fantasy (We WILL have Brian Roberts! Oh Yes!), or make perfect organization sense, I think we should all share them, because frankly, I'm already bored, and there are 106 days until pitchers and catchers report.
So without further adieu, let me propose a trade here to get things moving (disclaimer: I may or may not actually think this is a good idea) :
OF Matt Murton and RF Brad Hawpe to Kansas City for 2B Alberto Callaspo and SP Luke Hochevar
Kansas City will find themselves with a quality DH and an OF that will outperform Josh Fields, David DeJesus, Jose Guillen, and Mitch Maier, while Colorado solidifies their rotation with a perfect Apodaca-fixer-upper prospect who doesn't seem to have his game entirely together, as well as adds a decent hitter at 2B who may not have Barmes' glove, but makes up for it in his bat.
Feel free to comment on this trade, or to post your own ideas. Please be nice people. I mean, call out blatantly terrible trades, but in a NICE way, you get me?
Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Won't happen
The Royals just traded Mark Teahen because they couldn’t afford his $5 million salary. No way they’d take on Hawpe’s contract unless we were taking a big contract back from them in return.

what if we took back, say, Coco Crisp, use him in Murton's stead?

Uhhhh
Hochevar’s been good at not giving up home runs in the majors, but terrible at this in the minors.
Can we go back in time and trade Atkins for Zobrist?

Upon further review
He’s always been crap with giving up home runs, however recently he had displayed trends toward lowering that number until 2009.
He also has been pretty good at giving up not-fly balls.
He’s still kinda meh.
We should trade Hawpe to the Rangers.

Thats tough
I’ll say Kasey Kiker but I really have no way of evaluating how the Rangers feel about him and honestly, I doubt they’d do that.
I’ve been pretty vocal about trading Hawpe for relievers and stuff but I don’t know how to value minor league relievers. Having said that,
Beau Jones, and Beau Vaughan are two maybe, Guillermo Moscoso from AAA. Omar Poveda might have better stuff coming out of the pen.
Rangers might be ideal because 1. they can DH Hawpe, 2. They’re on the cusp of a playoff berth…

Ian Kinsler.
I mean, no one said we had to be the least bit realistic, right?
We’ll even throw in Barmey.

Thanks for a great season of Baseball!
I'll be back next year for another ride.
For a righthanded bat with pop...
What about Dan Uggla? I’m not good about knowing what to trade for him, but was wondering about maybe putting him at third and not sacrifice the defense at 2nd. Platoon with Stew for a power combo at third?
Just an idea. I’m not totally enamored, but would be interesting.
I got nothing.
Not sure
what they are looking for in return, probably pitching, but that would be a good guy to throw in at third with stew. I’d be happy with that.

I posted this in another thread, and i guess I'll throw it out for discussion
Dexter Fowler for Chris Coghlan? Dexter definitely has the higher upside, but Coghlan would be a great fit at second for us. I feel fine putting Cargo in center permanently; if we do that, I’m not sure what we do with Dex, as his tools aren’t really suited for a corner outfield spot. Both players are cheap and controlled for years. What say you?
Winners never quit, and quitters never win. But if you never quit *and* never win, you are an idiot
Brings to mind the whole
draft the best talent available rather than draft by need argument.
We’d definitely be losing (a potential) top talent for a very talented 2b.
It would be interesting if we did this and then dealt Hawpe and had Cargo, Murton, and Smith in the OF.
However, I’m not too sure about Coghlan’s defense.

However if he replicates this past year’s stuff he’s quality.
I also wouldn’t make the trade however, but it is a thought provoking proposal.

by Andrew Martin on Nov 7, 2009 12:19 AM MST up reply actions
I guess that depends on what
you consider is “blowing up in your face”?
Dear Rockies - Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster of a season! NL Wild Card Champs. Best turnaround in MLB history for a team to win the Wild Card. Can't wait to do it again next year!
Troy Tulowitzki - MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba - Re-sign!! he's en Fuego!!
Brad Hawpe- I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utleys in a single bound!
Marquis is safe.
He has more or less said that he wants to go to the Mets. At this point, him signing there is almost a certainty. So, I bet he declines. Torrealba, on the other hand, no. The whole point of not picking up the option was to not pay him 4 million bucks. Why risk the chance of paying him 5 million. They will try to negotiate a new contract closer to 2 million, but I see a 75% chance of another team offering him more on the market.
if we dont offer Marquis arbitration it will be stupid
theres no reason not to. even if he does accept its still just a 1 year deal which im fine with. however after the year he has had someone will offer him a multi year deal (which i dont want the rockies to do. 1 year fine but no multiyear) and we will get the picks
Lets offer arbitration to Yorvit
I think the odds are very good he’ll fine a bigger contract than the $4 million one here.
Making facetious trade rumors since 2012AD
I wouldn't.
We would have to pay the buyout plus the salary he is given, which would probably be around 5 million after his performance. It isn’t worth the very real risk (he likes it hear and isn’t going to get nearly that much on the market) for a pick. Marquis, on the other hand, is worth the risk considering he has already said he wants to go to NY.
i would not offer arb to yorvit
i really could see there not being a market for him and then if he came back and accepted arb we’d be stuck paying him $4-5 mil again. way too much for a backup catcher
i agree but just barely...
i say 50-50 on Yorvit coming back if with offer arbitration… I

"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."
--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
In this current economy...
you really do not want to offer arbitration to any player you don’t actually want on your roster next year. Because, believe me if so, there will be players accepting arbitration who teams thought would not (arb offered just to score draft picks). The FA market is going to be so bad this year, that players less than elite will be accepting arb, because arb usually results in still a healthy increase.
So no, I would not offered it to Marquis. After his last season, if he does take it, he’ll stand to get about $11m, which the Rox just can’t afford for a guy who pretty much had his career season.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I would offer arb to Marquis
There are only two type A starting pitchers in this years market (Lackey and Wolf) and Lackey is really to only dominant one. Marquis is not that far down the list and someone will sign him.

I figured he'd be an interesting pickup
Very much a Jason Hammel lookalike. He’s 26, so he’s kind of past the point of “young prospect” but turned into “project fixer upper”, pretty uninspiring K9, unacceptable BB9, moments of home run propensity.
Hoch throws a big slider and he’s developed a cutter. I get the feeling that Dac would help him fix up his change so that he’s not so reliant on his curveball – which isn’t terribly good.
Not much gas on the fastball, so he’d definitely need to learn how to throw his junk for strikes as well.

Just a couple of thoughts from me......
- we need to move Barmes, Hawpe & Street
- Go after Brandon Phillips……he is the EXACT fit this lineup needed. Taking on Arroyo and a healthy chunk of his remaining contract would ease the amount required to trade for Phillips and fill a void a hole in the Rockies rotation for a veteran guy that can eat innings. Phillips would be here for another 3 years.
- Street is going to get more money than we SHOULD give him. ALA Matt Holliday. Street will not have more trade value with us than he does now. Braves, Phillies, Mets & Red Sox could all have interest along with maybe the Rangers and Cubs.
- Hawpe should be moved. He can fetch more in return, and by freeing up cash, than he is worth to us. What do I mean? If we could basically land Brandon Phillips for Hawpe and Barmes would you do it? I know I would. I would trade Hawpe and Barmes before we traded Street though. This would give us payroll flex and allow us to make teams give us a heck of an offer before we moved him.
Another prediction
the Rockies will get at least one of these pitchers….
Roy Halliday, Derek Lowe or Ben Sheets.

Hawpe and Atkins for
dare I say, Jonathan Papelbon? Imagine it, Bentancourt in the 7th, Pap in the 8th and Street in the 9th. I’d say that’s a pretty solid way to close out a game.

Getting some RH power
How about we dangle Hawpe for Jake Fox? Jake off the bench for the corner infield and outield positions. Good RH power… Cubs pick up lefty (yes, some $$ issues?).
If not, then maybe Andruw Jones as RH power off bench – play 1B and all 3 outfield positions?
I don't trust Jones in CF any day of the week, ever
he wasn’t even that good in Atlanta – I mean he was pretty good, but yeah. LF/RF, cool.
nitpicking aside, I don’t think he’d be satisfied to back up Ryan Spilborghs, you know what I mean? There’s gotta be another “bottom of the barrel” team that would give him just enough over our 1 year deal offer to make him go start and be terrible.
