Rockies Preparing to Part with Fan Favorites
Joel Sherman has news from the Rockies, with tidbits on Hawpe, Betancourt, Torrealba, Francis, and Atkins.
Some news good, some bad, some - it depends on how you look at it.

In short,
Good, good, good, good and good. These are the directions the Rockies should head.
One thing that I’m not clear on about Atkins leaving, however, is who is the right hander that backs Stewart up at third?

A backup corner infielder is currently on the wishlist.
Several potential NRI targets have been brought up to me, but whether or not they’re just going to settle for that remains to be seen.

Wishlist:
Dan Uggla at 2B. Barmesy backing up the infield. Dream a little dream.
I think Uggles and moving Hawpe for relieving depth or a cheaper, younger outfielder (and a prospect) would take care of 75% of the team’s needs (if Francis is healthy). Historically, Uggla is up and down on D, but he’s due for an up year.

I don't like Uggla
only because of the performance he put on during the Cook part of the ASG. Otherwise that wouldn’t be terrible.

He really didn't screw it up
he did make two errors in the 10th that loaded the bases with nobody out but Cook got three groundballs to get out of it. It was Brad Lidge who blew it in the 15 with no errors behind him and Brian Wilson who gave up the leaad in the 8th that was the bigger problem for me

well Uggla....
made Cook look awesome by getting out of that jam that he started.
by Colsportsfan on Nov 9, 2009 9:46 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Uggla's Fielding
UZR has him going pretty up and down, and Pinto’s PMR rates Uggla pretty highly in ’08 and pretty low in ’07. Hardball Times does the same.
It’s possible that Uggla has what it takes to be a good second baseman – range and glove – but not the focus.
Regardless, even if he puts up mediocre defense, his overall value will be greater than any 2B the Rockies have ever had.
Plus, $7-7.5M in arb next year isn’t outrageous for him. Think of it as a swap with Atkins’ contract.
by deacs on Nov 9, 2009 7:26 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I think he's below average defensivly but I think he gets more blame than he deserves because of the All Star game last year.
Which is odd to me because it didn’t make a difference in the game. I think it would be close but I think the production of his bat would out weigh his below average glove.
I wonder if Bud Selig will give the Yankees a receipt with their World Series purchase

Agree
seems like all these moves are what we expected/hoped. Hopefully Yorvit lands on his feet, I hope he wasn’t making a power play but who could blame him really. I doubt we will get anything close to equal “value” for Hawpe but I think he needs to be moved regardless. A shame as I’ve always been a fan, but I think it needs to be done.

Forgive my ignorance, but who caught at the springs last year?

Phillips should be fine as a backup
A wild card would be AA catcher Michael McKenry, who will be added to the 40 man roster soon to protect him from the rule 5 draft. He could already play the position defensively better than an average big leaguer but he might be overmatched offensively. With a solid start in the springs or even perhaps in spring training, he could play into the picture as well

I thought this quote in the article interesting..
Colorado already has made an offer to retain free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba but he turned it down. The Rockies will look elsewhere for a backup catcher.
Also CDI and McKenry would make a great defensive tandem.

The ideal plan is Phillips being adequate for two+ months, then Mike McKenry being ready to go for backup duty.
If either one of those things doesn’t work, we may acquire a backup catcher midseason. We’ll also probably have 2-3 other options at ST as NRIs.
by WolfMarauder on Nov 9, 2009 4:28 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Don't make the same mistake twice.
Last years off season mistake was not getting rid of Atkins. We could have gotten something for him then. Most of us on Purple Row were all for it the time too.
The Rockies should not make the same mistake again. Hawpe should be worth more than Atkins was last year. The biggest reason is we don’t need him. We have strong outfielders without Hawpe. Hawpe is not a good fit for the Rockies because of the large outfield space.
That being said, I really hope Hawpe the best.
As far as the backup catcher goes, I would certainly like McKenry to get a shot. I was anticipating this last week, and looked at his year last year at Tulsa. This is a tough call, as he may not quite be ready. I believe if he is not ready this year, he should be ready by next.

It’s interesting to me when people make logical leaps from “not named” to “not credible,” when in reality, the unnamed reports, which will frequently be team officials who are contractually obliged to stay off record but are more intimately familiar with a team’s doings, are sometimes far more credible than those you get from the named sources, which a majority of the time will be players or their representative agents who are under no such contractual obligation but are thereby also far removed from what’s going on at team headquarters.
I think the main thing is that if you find the process of team building distasteful, including the moves that don’t ever wind up getting made (which always will outnumber those that do) it might be best to sit out this time of year. I imagine it gets pretty frustrating if you expect all the details to come out into the open nice and cleanly, or at all for that matter.
The hot stove is a messy period that’s far removed from the clean transparency of being a first person witness of the games during the regular season and this goes for reporters as well as us fans. Of course, some are more credible than others, but being automatically dismissive of reporters is almost as bad as taking everything they say at pure face value as soon to be transpiring fact.

Distinctions
It’s not so much that the different types of anonymous sources aren’t credible. Clearly they are, as you’ve well outlined. But there needs to be another dichotomy, or some sort of wink and nod to readers to delineate between “not named” and “not credible.” If there is such a pattern, I’ve never picked up on it.
The only what I understand how to do it is to know the reporters who are more credible – Rosenthal, Heyman, Gammons, Dejan K… the Pirates guy etc – and follow them more closely than others.

False.
Smyth was hands down our best player last season. One thing we loved was that he busted his ass every single shift. The issue he had in Colorado was being utilized improperly. He’s best served standing in front of the net and creating havoc in the crease. In Colorado, he rarely played that role and when he did we didn’t have the personnel to properly utilize him. I’m happy for him in LA and sad it didn’t work out in Colorado. Seems both parties exchanged zero animosity and came out the better for it on the other side.

I've thrown this out there a couple times
Here’s a guy that mashes in the minors, but Sciocia (I spelled that wrong, but w/e) wouldn’t play him with the big club. If we could swing it, I think it is worth a shot. With the Angels losing vlad, they could use a good DH, and Hawpe could spell Abreu, who is no youngster. So yeah, that trade would be my preference. Plus, Wood only makes 400 grand.

Think we can also get a reliever out of LAA?
Also, Wood’s been kinda crappy at SS in the minors but that might disappear at 2b. Also, he might be able to play 1st which would allow Helton days off, and Barmes can just start. Wood also trimmed his k-rate bigtime this past season in AAA. I wonder if that’s for real.

Same
maybe they could both be effective out of the bullpen since starter-to-reliever things can be funny like that.
I feel that both Hochevar and Reynolds can be “fixed” but yea, I don’t think their ceilings are too high, but who knows – after looking at his minor league numbers, one could say he could be an Aaron Cook or something but his injury troubles really cloud stuff…

Is so hard to tell with pitchers like this
With Hochevar’s age though it seems kind of late to catch lighting in a bottle

oh no doubt
I feel like the lightning left that bottle the same day both of those guys left college. Hope they prove me wrong though..

I don't know
I think Reynolds was more derailed by injury. His 2007 AA numbers were pretty sick.
We need Silverblood to confirm this.
