Yorvit walks away???
I'll be a bit disappointed if the Rockies and Torrelaba split up over $500K according to this article. Personally, I think the Rockies would be doing a disservice to their fans, themselves and the players if they don't agree to it. Yorvit is offering quite a discount for a very serviceable platoon back-up player.
. Seriously, the Rockies are getting a heck of a deal for a starting/back-up catcher if all Yorvit is asking is $5.5 for two years. Just look at his competition. At minimum he should recieve a payday bigger than Schneider, Castro, Molina and AJ. However, I'll be amaze if he get Mauer's Money
*Disclosure: Yorvit is my most favorite Rockies catcher other than Iannetta. I still would like Chris being the starter though.*

$5 million over two years is maybe a little more than a backup catcher should be paid IMO...
but if you’re going to pay a backup well, it should probably be the catcher, as backup catchers get relatively more PAs than other positional backups (outside of a platoon situation).
Eschew Obfuscation!
I agree with you...but
a lot of teams are already doing it already. A $5.5M/2year contract has a relatively minimal amount of risk for both parties. Besides, in the very likely scenario come the July 2010 trade deadline, we could get some prospects for Yorvit if Iannetta just blow people away.
Non sequitor prediction: The catching market for MLB will heat up a lot in July 2010.

MMmhh
That’s a good point jabberwocky. However, I don’t think we are spending $3M on mediocre back-up catcher. We are paying for three things with Yorvit
1 “quality back-up” to Ianetta
2 consistent offense
3 working with the latino pitchers
P.S.
I’m not advocating we spend any more than $5.5M for Torreabla. I think Ianetta should be able to breakthrough this year, plus with his contract, he is secured in his ‘psyche’. The starting catching job is his to lose.

RE Point 3
Go look at the OPS Against for Jimenez, JDLR and Morales for 2008 and 2009 when Iannetta was catching and when Yorvit was catching. I think you’ll see that the myth surrounding the latino pitcher’s results with Yorvit behind the plate is rather bunk.
More or less what you said
Yorvit doesn’t make that much of a difference with the latino pitchers.

Fair enough
I just don’t really buy into a whole lot of the “intangibles” stuff. Alot of teams lose “intangibles” guys all the time without it really having much affect on the on-field performance. Matt Holliday was a clubhouse guy, well liked by his teammates (in addition to a great player). The team seemed to do just fine in 2009 without him.
Sure the numbers may be bunk
But how do you know how the Latino players relate to one another in the clubhouse and the affect it has on their performance? Or discussing how to pitch a certain player while in the dugout?
Thanks for a great season of Baseball!
I'll be back next year for another ride.

Because if it had a large effect the numbers wouldn't reflect largely the opposite?

how do you know they don't all hate him like Ramon Ramirez did
conjecture != evidence I’m afraid.
remember: I like the guy. Think he’s cool as hell, etc.
Josh Fogg was also a great clubhouse guy.

1. It’s still a lot of money for a backup
2. Consistanently bad offense (from a year to year perspective, not the last couple months of this season)
3. I would hope that’s not a factor in the Rockies clubhouse

3) I think its been mentioned by Rockies people themselves..
or have I misread reports. ?
Dear Rockies - Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster of a season! NL Wild Card Champs. Best turnaround in MLB history for a team to win the Wild Card. Can't wait to do it again next year!
Troy Tulowitzki - MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba - Re-sign!! he's en Fuego!!
Brad Hawpe- I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utleys in a single bound!
Which?
That it’s a factor or not? That it’s an advantage or myth?

I'm not saying the numbers do,
I’m trying to find the article where I saw the comment. I’m saying I thought I remembered someone in the Rockies organization making that assertion.

Unfortunately, not all people within an organization are in tune with reality
even when it is an effectively run one. I’m inclined to believe that the benefit is a myth due to supporting numbers than someone’s perceptions. More than anything, I think Yorvit might have some sort of intangible extra connection carryover to the pitcher, but it is less than the benefit of Iannetta’s game-calling/defense/whatever that provides the better numbers. Essentially, it may be there, but it’s overstated

It may be discriminatory but it's not racist
People are more comfortable speaking their native language as opposed to their 2nd language. That’s basically the case for Torrealba with Ubaldo, Corpas et al.
Anyway, I think Yorvit is done….look at this.

I presume you are talking about the franchise’s history or including the minors; otherwise you’re not saying much. But for the record, Ryan Spilborghs is my favorite right-handed Rockies’ outfielder :)

Just on the current roster
Johnson was pretty good but he was falling apart by the time we got him.
Making facetious trade rumors since 2012AD
I could take him or leave him
I honestly think that it’s just time for a mutual parting of ways. Torre played well down the stretch last season, and he’s been a joy to watch over the years, but I think it’d be best for all parties involved (including, most importantly, Chris Iannetta’s psyche) if both sides moved on.

Perhaps but
if Torre is only asking $5.5M/2 years, you have to listen. Remember buy low, sell high, trade for prospects. The catching market is really really thin this year.
Making facetious trade rumors since 2012AD
Thin market is generally synonymous with overpayment
Also, a backup catcher with a half season left on his contract is not going to net prospects if anything. I’m curious if a two year deal would hamper McKenry’s arrival as well.

Is it possible the talks stalled
because of the imminent signing of Iannetta to the three year deal?
JFK
See
Iannetta got ~$2.5M/yr. on average. This is why I think $5.5M for 2 years is too high for Torrealba. The organization claims to have a lot of faith in Iannetta. The presumed backup shouldn’t be making more than the starter.

It's just the way salaries work in MLB
Yorvit a free agent, Iannetta is under club control. Of course Iannetta is going to get paid less. I feel like I should mention three words here, Zito and Lincecum. Enough said

wears down over a season and hit well only in the ladder parts of 09. Later dude.

That's a bit contradictory....
If he wears down, he shouldn’t have hit better in the latter part of ’09. It was more like he wore up.
Anyway, I like the guy’s fire and energy and I’ll be much happier seeing him as the plan B to Iannetta than some of the other names mentioned.

The last few years,
whoever starts opening day behind the plate struggles that year, and is overtaken by the backup who has a good year. This happened in 07 (Iannetta starting, Yorvit taking the job), 08 (vice versa), and 09. So let’s have Paul Phillips start opening day and then Iannetta will go bonkers and throw out another season like 08. MY LOGIC IS INFALLIBLE.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity
