I might agree based on current production

Except that there’s some kid playing shortstop that tops Hawpe. I believe his name’s Tulowitzki. Anyone heard of him?

I really don't understand the Hawpe pick

I wonder if they’re saying “WOW LOOK AT THIS LATE ROUND GEM!!!” and basing their evaluation on that?

Seems to be a bit skewed by confirmation bias then

But most prospect evaluation seems to be as such. The later rounds seem to be such a crapshoot as it is. For example, if dex turns out to be the next [awesome player comp] then will he get the accolades for being a 14th round pick despite being a 1st round talent who nobody bit on because he was gonna go play hoops at Georgia?

Hoops at Harvard or baseball at Miami.

But I doubt Dex would be the selection since he was expensive.

Hawpe wasn't that much of a reach..

because he had been drafted the previous year by the Blue Jays. At the time he was considered a prospect as a pitcher and hitter. His first year at LSU he posted a 1.068 OPS and his second year he lead the nation in doubles with a 1.059 OPS. Brad is one of the few baseball players to win a state HS championship, national College championship and then play in a WS.

Quick explanation on wRC+:

What OPS+ is to OPS, wRC+ is to wOBA. It’s wOBA, park and league adjusted. Due to this, I’ll probably cite wRC+ quite frequently and quit dancing between OPS+ and wOBA. Todd Helton is 71st all-time in career wRC+ I believe. Larry Walker is about 62nd on the list

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Dec 14, 2009 8:52 AM MST reply actions

I still don't like it at all

It seems completely unnecessary to go from wOBA to wRC and THEN adjust for park and everything in interest of plusification.

It ends up being a measure of value, obviously, but I’m having trouble seeing a real application for it aside from “WELL THIS GUY HAD SUCH A GOOD SEPTEMBER, LOOK AT HIS WRC+ IT’S 45 AFTER ONLY ONE MONTH NOW HERE’S A LIST OF YUNIESKY BETANCOURT AND DISCIPLES THAT THIS SEPTEMBER CALLUP WAS MORE VALUABLE AT THE PLATE THAN LOL”

I’d muchmuchmuchmuchmuchmuch rather have a wOBA+, because we’re all able to look at the context of PA in a given season or time frame. That said, I feel like it’s more mental legwork to try and backwards-extrapolate to account for a shortened season due to injury or callup.

That isn’t to say that I don’t like what it is, but I don’t like it without a wOBA+. I reeealllly like the idea of a park-adjusted wOBA+. I know that wRC+ IS wOBA+ in essence, but I like as much data as possible.

After all that, I do find it very clever that they find the wRAA based on the league number of wRC per PA. Saying this almost nullifies my mental legwork comment, but at the same time, it seems like people can fall into a wRC+ trap of taking the number in a vacuum moreso than if you looked at an OPS+ or wOBA+, as you’re fully aware of the fact that it’s a rate stat. I mean, I know that a rate stat is going to be more of a vacuum as it is, but wRC+ seems to have taken me somewhere different and I don’t know how to feel about that.

I guess I don’t understand it entirely. The uses of it still seem limited to comparing 2 players with a very similar number of PA.

I mean, if I tell you that Mark Reynolds had a wRC+ of 132 and Ian Stewart had a wRC+ of 98 (which is actually better than I expected), what can you say to compare the two batters? “Mark Reynolds did more with his PA than Ian Stewart did with his” is about all I can really say I suppose.

I keep dancing back and forth between understanding and not.

by Andrew Martin on Dec 14, 2009 9:07 AM MST up reply actions

that 2nd paragraph is completely faulty. Please disregard it.

I seriously re-read the fangraphs commentary like 4 times, started writing, stopped, thought, went back and read it again, thought some more, sipped my coke, pretended to work for a few minutes, took another sip, kept writing, read the fangraphs again, looked up Carlos Gonzalez’ wRC+ from 2009…

I’m still lost as to how to read it. Their methodology is interesting at the least, but the applications seem very limited.

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Dec 14, 2009 9:11 AM MST up reply actions

How would you calculate a wOBA+?

I tried to figure it out, and it seems like the best way would be to go through PA and wRC. Since wRC+ is a rate stat, I think it’s essentially the same thing with a different name. And yes, it can be misused as a rate stat, but not more than any other rate stat like OPS+, batting average or wOBA itself. As far as the PA appearances bit, it seems like they multiply divide by PA to gain reference to league average, then multiply it off again, so a player with a .338 wOBA will have the same wRC+ in a given season regardless of PA

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Dec 14, 2009 9:18 AM MST up reply actions

park adjust component stats

statcorner lists them for every park.

Also I read your comment on FG, I still don’t like the idea of treating it as a standard rate stat.

so a player with a .338 wOBA will have the same wRC+ in a given season regardless of PA

that’s gonna fall under the same problems that UZR/150 does then

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Dec 14, 2009 9:22 AM MST up reply actions

Hm

You’re right on that last part. I got 4 hours of sleep last night, things are clicking far more slowly.

I still want woba+, but this wrc+ does indeed seem to be effectively the same thing. I’ll probably like it more tomorrow.

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Dec 14, 2009 9:32 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

wRC+ = Rate Stat

I’d like to try and clarify here.

To get to wRC+ you’re really looking at wRC/PA vs league average R/PA. It’s as simple as that.

So you’re comparing two rate stats. wOBA+ would be exactly the same thing, except that it’s on a different scale. wOBA+ would also disregard IBBs (I believe) where wRC+ does not.

Playing time would have no impact on either stat. You could hit 1 home run in 1 plate appearance, call it a career and have a monstrous wOBA, wOBA+, or wRC+. Your wRC though would be pretty tiny compared to someone who played a full career.

by dkappelman on Dec 14, 2009 10:55 AM MST up reply actions

yeah, as the fog's been clearing over the past 2 hours, it's started to make sense again

I haven’t rechecked the FG comments, but do you see the application of wRC+ to be the same as OPS+?

Just for the record, as I’ve slowly woken up, it’s looked better and better. I don’t mean to seem like I am trashing it, although I’ll admit I may have been at the start. The only reason I don’t understand why wRC+ rather than simply wOBA+ is that wRC is just wOBA*PA, correct? So why take the extra step of converting to wRC from wOBA and not just adjust wOBA and lgwOBA and then multiply by PA? Same result, but it seems like it’s less work, or a more logical workflow.

Also, additional question, and I could probably just research this a bit more, but I’m already posting from work :V

By themselves, wRC and wRAA are NOT park adjusted or whatever, correct? That said, does the “w” prefix simply mean that they employ linear weighting in their formulation? Seeing how they’re formulated from wOBA, this would make sense.

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Dec 14, 2009 11:15 AM MST up reply actions

yep!

It’s the same application as OPS+. wRC is a little more than wOBA * PA. You need to add in the average R/PA and then multiply by PA and you need to do the whole bit with the wOBA scale to get things back to a regular run scale.

Read this post here by Tangotiger: http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/woba_primer/#6

I had the exact same question you had and it has to do with getting the stat on the same scale as OPS+

by dkappelman on Dec 14, 2009 11:20 AM MST up reply actions

and the "w"

Yeah, the “w” is just to denote that it’s “weighted” or based off linear weights. The actual stats are Runs Created (RC) or Runs Above Average (RAA), but adding the w just makes it clear that they’re wOBA (or linear weight) based.

by Hizilla on Dec 14, 2009 12:04 PM MST up reply actions

I have a favorite stat

It’s OPS, and I have a really long and boring explanation as to why.

by controlled_slide on Dec 14, 2009 12:30 PM MST up reply actions

OPS

It combines two of the most important things when measuring a hitter’s value to the team (OBP and slugging). Even though woba is a little more accurate because it weighs OBP more and treats slugging percentage a little different, the list of players sorted by OPS will look almost exactly the same as the list of players sorted by woba. (So I feel I can use OPS and lose very little accuracy in value)

OPS however has a much wider range (1.101 to .559 from best to worst player) than woba (.449 to .259 from best to worst player). This stetches the differneces between the good and bad players and makes the data much easier to interpret. I also like how I can mentally sort players into groups based on .100 point steps. (Over 1.000 = best few players in the game, over .900 = All star. over .800 = better than average, over .700 = average to below average, and under .700 = suck)

I just like to use it more than woba and I don’t feel like I’m losing much.

I wonder if Bud Selig will give the Yankees a receipt with their World Series purchase

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Dec 14, 2009 3:53 PM MST up reply actions

you're not losing much at all

the reason they made wOBA is to convert it into wRC. You can’t do anything further with OPS. But OPS is easy to eyeball and such.

As for accuracy, wOBA is better for really high end guys like Pujols, ARod, Bonds, etc.

if they're going to do it, I want them to go balls out

I want them to have a rotation of Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Happ, Blanton, and just straight up go for broke.

I still think

the best thing for instilling some financial parity in baseball would be for the Yankees to just run away with baseball for the next few seasons and force people to take notice that “hey, maybe this isn’t fair”

It already isn't fair

What I think they should do is put the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, and Phillies all in the AL East. Move the Rays O’s and maybe Jays to the NL. That way these big money teams will know what it’s like to have to beat teams who have no salary limitations.

You're right, it isn't fair

But for basically all of this decade, the Yankees outspent everyone by 50 million, didn’t really win the world series (until this year), lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Angels a lot, got embarrassed by the Red Sox in 04, and even missed the playoffs altogether in 08. That’s just “evidence” that parity can exist on the field despite a complete financial disparity behind off the field – or at least that’s what people will say.

Try this

Esau Wood sawed wood. Esau Wood would saw wood. All the wood Esau Wood saw, Esau Wood would saw. In other words, all the wood Esau saw to saw, Esau sought to saw. Oh, the wood Wood would saw! And, oh the wood-saw with which Wood would saw wood! But one day, Wood’s wood-saw would saw no wood, and thus the wood Wood sawed was not the wood Wood would saw if Wood’s wood-saw would saw wood. Now, Wood would saw wood with a wood-saw that would saw wood, so Esau sought a saw that would saw wood. One day, Esau saw a saw saw wood as no other wood-saw Wood saw would saw wood. In fact, of all the wood-saws Wood ever saw saw wood, Wood never saw a wood-saw that would saw wood as the wood-saw Wood saw saw wood would saw wood, and I never saw a wood-saw that would saw as the wood-saw Wood saw would saw until I saw Esau Wood saw wood with the wood-saw Wood saw saw wood. Now Wood saws wood with the wood-saw Wood saw saw wood.

Honestly

I see it as a totally lateral move for this season but its the extension that changes things (profound, I know). The only way it really impacts stuff is if Lidge decides to totally suck again – then Halladay’s 9 complete games will come in handy bigtime…

I liked Neyer's comment about Pujols..

I added parentthesis to complete his thought:

It’s not easy to choose between the top two, but by all accounts Pujols is a model ballplayer and model teammate. Plus, his numbers are as good as A-Rod’s even though he’s played one fewer season (without steroids).

No, I agree

I was just saying that initially I was surprised to see him there, because despite how awesome he is and his NYC-location, he’s relatively low profile for a superstar and doesn’t immediately jump to mind when discussing all-decade greats. But I can’t come up with a non-homer argument for Helton being above him.

I think stats and linear algebra is probably better than Calc for the baseballing.

But calculus is so much fun for real life situations. For example: How much frosting do we have in this mixing bowl? Well, approximating the bowl as a parabola…. area under curve… 1542 lbs of frosting!!! I may have screwed up somewhere in my analysis, or I am going to be diabetic very soon.

This is bulls**t… I have never used any f-bombs on this site, and now I realize it was all waiting for today.

This is f***ing bulls**t. Not only do we lose John Lackey to of all people the f***ing Red Sox, but we also are not f***ing getting Roy Halladay, and to top it off in part of that deal Cliff Lee goes to the f***ing Mariners. This day f***ing sucks. But don’t worry we are going to sign Hideki Matsui. News flash: Hideki Matsui f***ing sucks. On what f***ing planet, even in Vlad’s s**ttier years, is Hideki Matsui better than Vlad? So we are not signing Vlad because we are getting Matsui. F***ing great. We are going to lose the f***ing AL West to the f***ing Mariners, and even if by some miracle we don’t, we are going to get pounded in the a$$ in the first round of the playoffs. Don’t say good for John. F*** this, f***the Mariners, f*** the Red Sox. We are f***ed.

see, i can't anymore

it’s retarded. there isn’t a rivalry anymore. the wings are kind of a litmus test for us, but there’s not much left there. Stick to the division, and no, the red wings do not suck. they’re a pretty impressive franchise.

Hope got in my eyes

When you hang out at MHH

Do NOT voice this particular opinion.

The Wings don't suck at all.

Historic rivalries still fan the flames between fan bases. I worked with a couple of Wings fans and they still hate the Avs and remember the playoffs bouts. Retarded or not, Wings fans hate the Avs,, and Avs fans hate the Wings. Its just fun.
