Melvin Mora
I know Ringolsby has mentioned Mora as a possibility for the Rocks bench. Has this been discussed on the Row and if so, would someone be kind enough to point me in the right dirction. I haven’t had much time to read all of the Rockpiles lately. Thanks – jl
TGFPR!!
we discussed it a little bit yesterday,
Some of us prefer Fernando Tatis, some would prefer Juan Uribe (who hasn’t been connected with the team) Mora seems like a vanilla choice that nobody really had a huge issue with (unless the cost gets too high) but nobody seemed super enthused about it, either, if I was reading it correctly.
Missed out on yesterday
So I don’t know if it was discussed, but do some of the experts on this site prefer a AAAA type (we already have) to serve in the Mora/Tatis position?
Our best current internal option for that would be Holcomb,
and as we also discussed yesterday with McKenry in relation to the backup catcher slot, projecting that kind of success for a minor leaguer skipping two levels is a bit too risky for a contending club. Like McKenry, I like Holcomb having a 25 roster slot in a season or so, but this year I think we have to go for a more certain return.
Did he sign with anyone?
He became a FA back in November.

Colonel's a free agent,
and a link I put up in a Rockpile around Thanksgiving seemed to indicate that he and the Rockies were parting ways, that he was looking for opportunity elsewhere.
Colonel has not yet signed with anyone.

seems to me that he'd be a pretty good utility guy for 1B/3B. Wonder why the parting of ways.
Was it on the FO or his part?

He was a minor league free agent
and took the option to look around. He’s getting old and finding a place to get ML time is going to be a little difficult for him.
JFK
Yeah but we wouldn't be expecting him to be Kevin Youkilis.
Just be there to give Ian and Todd some rest and an occasional PH at bat. He’d probably play about as much as Omar did.

I know
He is a free agent just like Holliday and Bay but he isn’t nearly as good or he would have been on the roster already. If he makes a team out of ST it will be as a backup CI with base running and pinch hitting abilities. He will be getting some looks, I just don’t know if the Rockies will give him the looks. I kind of hope they will.

…he’ll be 38 to start the season and has been on the decline for the past few years. Once excellent player, now hanging on.
by Curt in Florida on Dec 18, 2009 8:33 AM MST up reply actions
Yeah his name has been thrown around here on the Row
from time to time. Seems he falls interest wise here (like we have a vote or a say) somewhere below Fernando Tatis, and Juan Uribe. Biggest issue for Mora seems to be the number of candles on his cake. He’s 37 (will be 38 in February) and not getting younger. Last year his numbers really fell, and everyone seems to think he’s hit that wall where his numbers will continue to fall (normal age decline). Some seem to think he would make a good bench player still.
no reason to send you to an old tread when we can talk about it again…it’s slow off season for the Rockies
Uribe
I’d take Uribe in a heartbeat over the others, but he probably wants more of an opportunity to play than PH and an occasional start. He’s a free-swinger who was here before (he certainly has beefed up). I don’t see Uribe and Barmes on the same team
by Curt in Florida on Dec 18, 2009 8:38 AM MST up reply actions
Last year was kind of an anomaly for Uribe,
I would much rather have the guy who consistently has an OPS over 100 (Tatis) than the one that does it every six seasons or so.
i could OPS over 100!

Oops, yeah, I thought I might have made that mistake, I did.
I meant OPS+
Tatis’ career OPS is .790 and he’s consistently around there,
Uribe’s is .729 and he’s a bit more sporadic.
Capps hype
It seems like Matt Capps is all the rage right now. I say pull back and take a harder look and try to see beyond the hype that has probably been stirred by Capps agent (which is his job) and by a negative story in the Pittsburgh press about why he was let go in the first place. Capps had a bunch of saves in ‘09 but he also lugged around a 5.80 ERA. That is huge for a reliever. Apparently he puts plenty of guys on base and finally gets the save. Rox don’t currently need him to close and Betancourt is certainly able for the eighth (which might make the Rox a longshot for Capps to begin with). Haven’t you had enough of the Fuentes-type save? I know I have. That’s what Capps will likely bring. Maybe the Pirates made a mistake (big surprise there, eh?) but there is a better chance they didn’t. They watched Capps for the past several years and know what they had, which looks to me like a guy who has topped out and for whatever reason is not improving, just going sideways at best. Caveat emptor.
by Curt in Florida on Dec 18, 2009 8:32 AM MST reply actions
Capps
has had some decent numbers, but he was not great in 09. I think the idea for the Rockies was to bring him into low leverage set up situations, have Appodacca work his voodoo magic, and get a usable reliever.
But not if there is a huge bidding war.
ERA is not the best way to evaluate a reliever
It can be affected too much by one game and the volatility of small sample sizes. Rox girl brought this up earlier, but a main cause of his high ERA was his very high home run rate, and something like three quarters of the home runs he allowed were characterized as “just enough”.
He did lose his fastball command, but Bob Apodaca has a good recent record at fixing pitchers. Capps is young and has a solid record of mlb success, so if he can be had at a good price, there’s no downside for him being a sixth inning guy or late inning insurance. But like redhawk said, we don’t need to get in a bidding war
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Dec 18, 2009 8:56 AM MST via mobile up reply actions
I love the "just enough"
commentary, as though that makes it ok. To quote a great line: “Who gives a crap, its gone.”
Are we talking about what Matt Capps did for the Pirates in 2009?
Or are we talking about what he could do for them in 2010? While you’re right in that you can’t take those HR’s off of his records, if you’re really trying to figure out if he’s always going to give up that many HR’s, the “just enough” thing does matter.
Really,
I just wanted an excuse to use the line.
But I’m not sure I buy the value of “just enough” anyway, leaving aside the inherent subjectivity and whatnot, the “just enough” ball in most yards is “comfortably gone” at Coors. Whatever, this seems to me to probably be too fine a point to get worried about either way.
Okay, I understand where you're coming from,
and I would drop it if it weren’t for this:
leaving aside the inherent subjectivity and whatnot, the "just enough" ball in most yards is "comfortably gone" at Coors.
which just hasn’t been the case post-humidor. Coors Field is still the most offensive oriented park in baseball in everything except home runs. It’s not exactly clear why, but the fact is HR’s are actually harder to hit in Coors now. If you looked at Capps chart, at least a third of those “just enoughs” (including the HR Brad Hawpe hit off him last year) happened in the short right center gap at PNC, which is sort of a home run alley and those definitely would be contained in NL West parks, although at that point we have to figure out if Fowler reaches them or if they become triples to the gap, which could be just as bad as a HR most times.
I think my major point is that people look at Capps and say, “oh, he gives up too many HR’s, how dumb can the Rockies be?” which is the same argument they use for every single pitcher that comes here (Hammel especially last season, but also Contreras and Betancourt) it seems, and I haven’t seen enough people getting it into their heads that there’s clearly something wrong with this reasoning when it consistently is proven false.
Fair enough
I certainly haven’t studied this closely at all. But there are obviously too many variables involved, to me, for this to be considered a letigimately valuable “statistic.” I’ll take your word that he would not be projected to give up more bombs at Coors than he would otherwise, and that his previous history of Way Back Wasdinitis is, to some extent, bad luck.
In any event, I’m not too excited about Capps but if we sign him I’ll be ok with it. To me, the bullpen looks good and will be dominant if Corpas and Buck are ready to roll, two guys that I suspect are far more talented than Capps. If those guys are not good, then Capps would be much more valuable. As with any bullpen projection, we’ll have to wait and see.
HR/FB% is kind of like BABIP
you take it with a big grain of salt. There’s the chance that it means he was a lousy straightballer, or there’s a chance that the wind was just right or there was, as RG pointed out, there’s a short porch or something. The idea is if you’re a career 7.0% HR/FB% guy, and suddenly you’re up at 13.6%, something went wrong besides “lol he just sux” – not insinuating you’re taking that stance. In this case, he seemed to have lost command of his changeup in 2009 (if I’m recalling correctly), and as Crash Davis once said, “everybody in the show can hit heat”.
This offseason is completely boring.

Agree on WHIP
I also enjoy K/BB and individual component rate stats.
I see SPs as guys who need to trade the acuity of their individual weapons in favor of overall longevity, in terms of like K/9 or whatever, and the ones who still excel are your Best Starting Pitchers™
Meanwhile, I see RPs as guys with a very specific skillset that should be used in very specific situations to maximize their out-getting ability, like some sort of Planeteers or something
“Fireball!” “Knuckleball!” “Submarine!” “LOOGY!” “Mopup!” “With your powers combined, I am Captain Leverage Situation!”
seriously though, with RPs I want to see a low WHIP, seeing how they pitch very short outings and oftentimes with men on base, you don’t want to see a lot of traffic. I mean, you never do, but with a SP you can kind of excuse it if they put up a bunch of zeroes later or something.
This offseason is completely boring.

Good luck to Ryan, but I don’t know how much more opportunity he will get in Tampa.
Likely an organization player
…unless Carlos Pena gets hurt again. Plus, Pena will be FA after 2010 and is possible trade bait if Rays season goes south. Bottom line for Shealy is that he has to hit on the major league level and he has yet to truly show that he can on a consistent basis.

I like tatis for the defensive side of things
But If Giambi could come back at a pro-Rockie price tag, I would throw my support over to the grey beards who keep the clubhouse fun, and the fans in the seats…
Its just kind of hard to have the Toddy vacuum over there at 1st base 6 days a week and then throw out Giambi who looks like he has a little leaguers glove on his massive pythons. I think he might be better off just positioning his body in front of the ball and field it with his pec’s. But he is fun to watch, and a threat late innings off the bench.
And any reference to the thong is a good reference IMHO

OF ABs
just curious to know how you all think the outfield at bats will shake out this year. Any thoughts on trading someone like Hawpe to allow full playing time for (Smith, Fowler, CarGo)? Seems like Hawpe with his good hitting and poor defense could be the type of OFer that is overvalued by some GM that doesn’t properly value defense.
vr, Xei
As long as Hawpe is here, his contract gives him the starting job.
CarGo and Fowler are the most likely to be the other two, with Smith continuing his (hopefully successful) PH/spot start extravaganza. Should the FO get an offer they like for Hawpe, and pull the trigger, CarGo will probably switch to RF, and Smtih takes over in LF. We would then need to find outselves another bench OF for the roster.
by Greg Stanwood on Dec 18, 2009 11:41 AM MST up reply actions
I think this is true
out of the gates, but after the playoffs last year (and if management doesn’t think deadline deal is likely very lucrative and therefore no “audition”), I suspect that Hawpe will have a relatively short leash this year. I certainly think this manager (and pretty much every other manager) will defer to veterans, but Hawpe is, essentially, a lame duck this year and there’s not a lot to gain by giving him undue consideration.
That may well be true
But Hawpe’s a sunk cost (if we don’t trade him). The intelligent decision would be to have him be the 4th outfielder – assuming that Smith, Dex and Gonzalez all produce better than he does. Considering Hawpe’s defense, that’s probably a good assumption at this point.
Will the Rockies make the intelligent decision? That remains to be seen, but it seems there’s a trend in baseball toward statistically based decision making, and I’ll be interested to see what happens if Hawpe does remain in Colorado.
Also, I think that a Smith-Gonzalez-Hawpe outfield might be a better option than Gonzalez-Fowler-Hawpe. Gonzalez plays a great center field, and Smith’s a good option in the #2 slot in the lineup.
by controlled_slide on Dec 18, 2009 1:53 PM MST up reply actions
I disagree about the 4th outfielder thing.
Having him on the bench really hurts the trade value, if they do decide to go that route during the year.

A running catch in the corner is worth more than the ball rolling around as the runner digs for 3rd.
But seriously, I am really curious to see how ODowd plays this. With Hawpe not starting in the playoffs, that hurt his value. But now Dandy Dan is saying he’s not shopping Hawpe. If he gets off to a similar start in 2010 as 09, value goes up again. Should be interesting.

It's very true that big bats are highly coveted for the stretch run
So if Hawpe stays put this offseason, he’ll have great value around the trading deadline. However, I don’t think that his value will be hurt too awfully much by being a 4th outfielder over the course of the season. Everyone knows his bat is good and his defense is lousy, if they want him they want him. He’s had plenty of years for them to look at.

It certainly wouldn't seem so.
O’Dowd’s statements could simply be for positioning purposes, but the impression I get right now is that they’re standing with him as of now. It’d take a supreme offer for them to pull the trigger, barring a change of heart.
I know that one of the interested teams was the Red Sox. That was three weeks ago, and can no longer be the case. At this point, I don’t know how the market is, because I haven’t heard anything from my “contact” (I feel like such a tool saying that, ha) in quite a while.
There are other teams on record saying they have interest in Hawpe. I would pull the trigger on a Hawpe trade for just one decent player. We don’t need to clean up with it. But I’m not the GM. Yet. :D

Y'know, the more I look at this
The more it seems that they’re doing the same thing here that they’re doing with the Catcher position. They’ve got a guy (or in the outfield, 3 guys) who look to be the future, and who are better than the incumbent. But They want to hedge their bets by not getting rid of the guy whose ceiling is lower, but whose floor is, at least in their perception, higher. We as fans can say that a Smith-Fowler-Gonzalez outfield would be the awesomest thing ever, but they have a team to run, and they don’t want to take risks when they have a veteran who can provide them insurance.

McKenry behind the plate, likely better than Torrealba. At the plate, not even close.
Torrealba knows out pitchers better than mcKenry.
From that perspective, even Torrealba behind the plate wouldn’t be the worst option. Though, from other defense perspectives, Torrealba certainly is a weak point.

I was not considering that from a game-calling perspective, which I do think is a point in Torrealba’s favor.

I think the last two years of McKenry catching in ST with the pitchers has helped. Sure he doesn’t know everything but he knows our staff better than anyone coming from outside the organization. I want Mike to see one more minor league year, or at least part, to show what he can do offensively. Bring on the outsider.

If it makes you feel better
every player on every team will one day be an EX-whatever. It’s the nature of the game. Players get old, retire, get traded, etc. While we have our favorites, they will leave one day just like our least favorites will.
I’ve lived through that enough to know it’s part of the game.
But Ivan Rodriguez in any uniform but a Rangers is still weird to me, and I still miss Matt Holiday, but it’s part of the game.
Oh I know..
that’s partly why I quit baseball for awhile…It became really frustrating to follow a team only to have players leave or be traded all the time. That’s one reason why I jumped back on board the Rockies when they started the build from within and created GenR.

I think its worse in baseball,
especially with no salary cap. I dunno, I think baseball fans feel more attached to teams. We watch them play everyday, for at least 162 games. Some follow during spring training. Basketball and hockey play 1/2 that number and football far less. We follow crazy statistics on each player. I can’t really articulate it well. I really like to root for a group of players who’ve come together and gelled as a team.
I can’t really explain it better than that.
Dear Rockies-Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster season! Best turnaround in MLB history to become NL Wild Card Champs.

I feel like football is worse
although stars are rarely traded, the non-guaranteed nature of contracts there makes players much easier to just cut ties with.
I think football SEEMS worse
because so many of the players we don’t know, and they are distanced by the fact that they wear helmets, and we don’t get so see the players faces.
I mean, an offensive line man, may be there 10 years…but did you get attached to him in anyway? doubtful.
but I think all teams in all sports have turn over. For example…I was a fan of the 77 Cowboys….know how many of them are playing 32 years later? None of em.
You're right
I should have said seems, especially becuase of how rarely stars change teams, which I think is largely a factor of the financial parity in the NFL.
Although, I wonder how many of the people that were angry about Cutler departing wish they could take it back. This guy sure does.
I think also that baseball is more discretized
You can easily separate each player’s accomplishments within a game, whereas with football, it’s a much more team-oriented approach. Certainly certain positions like quarterback are more obvious in their contributions, but by and large most players are part of a unit and not seen as individuals.
by controlled_slide on Dec 18, 2009 3:32 PM MST up reply actions
I think it's actually worse in football AND basketball
In football, the stars rarely move, but there’s usually huge % turnover of a roster from year to year, and that’s where the nature of the non-guaranteed contracts come in.
For instance, how many 2009 Broncos were 2008 Broncos? Even taking account of the coaching change, how many will actually end up 2010 Broncos?
With the NBA, the whole salary cap based “sign and trade” charade has led to lots of movement. Again, not often affecting the top 3-4 stars in the rotation, but a good % of the overall roster.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
The 2008 Shanahan Broncos were replaced
by the 2009 McD Broncos. I’m not sure that is a fair comparison. McD cleaned house to bring in his guys mostly.
but I understand what you are getting at…

The top 3-4 players are the ones that most care about
There were more Rockies fans disappointed with Holiday’s departure than Fogg’s. I’ve already heard people on here talking about where Jimenez will get his big contract once he becomes a free agent.
Take a look a the Nuggets. Melo is not going to sign with the Knicks because they offered him a bigger contract. They actually can’t offer more than the Nuggets can. If he leaves, it will be because he wants to play closer to home, or play for his favorite team when he was growing up or something along those lines. It won’t be because the Nuggets can’t give him enough money.
The same is true with the NFL. A midmarket team like Indianapolis has been able to hold onto the best QB of the decade. That happens in baseball (it looks like Pujols will be in St. Louis for a long time), but it seems less common.
Hitting. He'll get back to the form we saw before the All-Star break
And I know I’m going to get bashed for saying it, but why couldn’t he improve his defense? Track the ball better…etc….his arm certainly covers alot of his bad defense. Maybe CarGo can give him some pointers :). Of course, he’ll be spending time, practicing his 1st base defense.

While his arm is strong
he has lost quite a bit of accuracy with it in the last couple years, partially because few players run on him any more. If I knew the techniques and drills to help one improve defense at a major league level I would be coaching right now, but alas I will leave that to the coaches and players around him. He can improve, and I hope he will, but it will take some work.
JFK
I'm less optimistic on his D
31 year old fielders with historically bad defense, rarely if ever make a jump to respectability; granted he could get lucky with a few more balls hit to him, but i think there’s no way he all of a sudden improves his reads or his routes after this long in MLB.
As far as his offense goes, he’s been a notoriously streaky hitter, and his aggregated 2009 was actually quite good. .900+ OPS. Even when he was struggling in the second half, his OBP was still .370 for a massive .130 IsoD. It would be tough to improve on 2009, but he has had better years before. Either way, status quo at the plate is pretty freaking good.z
Defense for Hawpe
You can’t teach and old dog new tricks.
It’s not impossible, that he might see the weakness in his game, and try to improve it, but even with that, you have natural age declines, and at best you really hope he plateaus and not fall off more.
I agree with all of the above
I just want him to make an active effort in improving his dismal defense, whatever that may require. I am not holding my breath on the matter though.
JFK
Jeter improved his defense last year
And at a much more difficult position. It’s possible. I’m not saying that I think Hawpe will improve his defense, but he could if he worked at it.

I'm guessing 550 - 600 PA's for Hawpe...
I don’t think he’s as movable as armchair GM’s make him out to be. And as WolfMarauder says, his contract and tenure will give him the most AB’s from a manager like Tracy.
@500 each for Dex and CarGo
450 for Smith,
350 for Spilborghs.
Last season those five had 2200 PA's, total
Matt Murton added another 56 which will go into this pool, which still leaves me overshooting by 100 from 2009. Maybe I’m seeing the Rockies score more and having more PA’s to spread around (actually I do, but not to that degree). Subtract 10-15 PA’s each and you’ll probably get a more realistic range for your simulator. Some of Hawpe’s PA’s might be coming at the expense of Helton at first if what we’re hearing from the team is true.
Last year I remember the brass saying they would sit Helton regularly.
Then they just kept playing him.

actually
there will be a point where being a switch hitter may get scrapped. I figure/guess he’s got this year to get better and more experienced at it.
I tend to agree
If he’s not going to bunt and slap for hits batting from the left side is not necessarily to his advantage. Let him hit the ball hard into a gap or for singles through the infield and take care of the rest once he reaches base.

saying last year things very similar to jrockies…thought they were trying to make something out of him that was going against his natural abilities. I was in hopes that they would would drop the switch hitter thing and work on his other abilities of which he has many.
I've been ranting about that
If our manager tries to turn Dex into the next Dave Roberts i’ll vomit. Dex has good gap power, and could be a .850+ OPS kind of guy with 40-50 2baggers a season
Think Brian Roberts but lankier and stronger.

For what it is worth, Tracy was quoted as saying Fowler and Cargo would get 500+ ABs
O’Dowd has said repeatedly that Hawpe is not being shopped, and while that is probably posturing, I have this strong feeling that O’Dowd will miss the obvious move of trading Hawpe as he did with Atkins last offseason.
With hawpe still in the mix, he would still be a predominant starter and Smith would be relegated to the bench even more than he was in 09

I'm thinking more and more
that Hawpe is Helton Insurance for the organization. And I’m not sure that isn’t fairly long term, as he might be the 1st baseman-in-waiting, which i hope not. Hawpe’s not getting younger or cheaper either, and when Helton does retire, I hope the Rockies have another 1st baseman close by then.
Without a flame-out...
…CarGo and Fowler must get 500+ ABs. Same goes for Smith, who should be ready for fulltime work. It’s their time. But I think it would be a mistake to write off Hawpe unless he shows early in the season that he is following in the Atkins footsteps. I would imagine he will be back at first half 2009 strength in the early going. He knows what is at stake. At the worst he would be excellent July trade bait.

Milton Bradley, Ex-Cub
Now that this nutcase has been traded I have come up with a case of schadenfreude. Not only did the Cubs sign MB to a stupid-money deal and get the short end when he behaved as advertised, they forced themselves into a box and only saved $6 million and were obliged to take on yet another dumb contract: Carlos Silva, a has-been who never was. No wonder the northsiders haven’t won in a century. Teams like the Cubs, who fancy themselves as Yankee-type spenders, refuse to build like the Rox, through the draft and the system. I’m feeling third place for the Cubs in 2010 no matter how loudly their loud-mouth fans scream at Coors Field this year.

I read a bit at Lookout Landing
And their thoughts were kind of this: Their clubhouse is pretty tight knit, which would be harder for Bradley to tear apart than the Cubs’, which basically falls apart the first time they drop back to back series. Also, they said Silva was no saint in his own right.

I've seen 2 different figures on the cash in the deal
One report said the Mariners were sending $6 mil in cash, the other said $9 mil.
Bradley has $21 mil left on his contract
Silva has $25 mil left (including buyout)
So the Cubs are taking on an additional $4 mil in salary over 2 years.
If they get $6 mil from the Mariners, then they’re up $2 mil.
If they get $9 mil from the M’s, then they’re up $5 mil.
Whatever their “savings”, I’m glad to have the possibility of the Rockies batting against Silva this year. Stats-padding time.
New decade, new result: time for a Rockies' division championship.

Short answer: Yes
Long answer: He would be a good option to back up first base 1-2 times per week and his pinch hitting is what I see similar to Matt Stairs. If he would like to come back then that would make me happy. If he wants to get a lot of at-bats as a DH then that would be fine too.

Yes, but it will depend on the depth situations at 2B, 3B.
That’s the only reason I WOULDN’T want him back is making sure we had the right players to back up key positions first, and if there wasn’t room, sorry Giambino, you’re a bit of a luxury.
I enjoyed having him around, it felt good to have a “big boy” on the team who you could get excited about coming to the plate. I mean, we do have one, but maybe it’s because he was a big-market player for awhile and even though he’s kind of like the Yankees leftovers, I enjoyed having him around. I felt a bit more badass knowing we had him up our sleeve.
He’s the one guy on the roster that I wouldn’t look at the stat book for. I would just let my gut take control and be like “awww damn here comes da wolf pack”

I felt a bit more badass knowing we had him up our sleeve.
I think the players got that from him too. I’m not sure why in Colorado more than in Oakland, but this really is importance. I’ve always thought the difference in a lot of teams and players at this level is swagger, and confidence. We are talking the best baseball players in the world…the worst MLB player is still a damn great players….so what can give them an extra degree of separation? If it’s having Giambi sitting on the bench, then that would be a reason.
(still not sure a NL team can carry a guy like Giambi, who can only play 1st, and that not well)
I pretty much agree with you
if we can land some sort of right handed Ross Gload type (Tatis) who can be versatile enough to be a super utility guy and play 200+PA, we can afford to “waste” a spot on the Giambino

Two notes:
1. As a minor league contract, this move essentially costs us nothing. He doesn’t figure to make the team barring an injury, and he’ll start the season at AAA.
2. Jorge Julio may be remembered for his utter failure at the end of the season, but people forget is absolutely godlike midseason. Juan Rincon wasn’t godlike at all, so I think that’s quite an insult to Jorge Julio… :D

Dear Rockies-Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster season! Best turnaround in MLB history to become NL Wild Card Champs.
Garrett Atkins-So Long, Farewell, Auf weidersehen, Goodbye!! You were a great Rockie! GOOD LUCK!
Troy Tulowitzki-MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba- Re-sign!! he's en Fuego!!
Brad Hawpe- I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utleys in a single bound!
Maybe you should get tested?
It could be serious. Or contagious.

Hey SDcat
RI is under a “Blizzard Watch” for tomorrow night and Sunday with over a foot of snow expected. If this thing hits the Hawpe for the weather deal is off. :-)
I wonder if Bud Selig will give the Yankees a receipt with their World Series purchase

Rockies 2010 NL West Favorites?
I have my preliminary 2010 WAR worksheet up and currently the Rockies are at the top of the division. Feel free to drop me any constructive criticisms. I didn’t list the full playing time projections from my spreadsheet as I just went with individual and bench WAR totals.
vr, Xei
It sort of feels like that's the case right now
The Dodgers fell back quite a bit by losing Wolf, and otherwise if everything else remains status quo in the division, it should favor the Rockies. I’m not getting my hopes up too high yet, last year Colletti signed Manny and Orlando Hudson pretty close to pitchers/catchers reporting day, and there are a lot of free agents available that would represent upgrades for LA.
I’m more optimistic we’ll stay ahead of the Giants now that Nick Johnson’s off the board, Grant at MCC seems to think their offseason is going down the drain as well.
The Padres will look really bad if you replace AGone's WAR..
I think Ian Stewart is rated a little low, especially if you compare his numbers to Mark Reynolds. It appears that Ian could be on a similar trajectory to Mark, only a year behind.
That being said, Jeff Francis might be ranked a little high coming off of surgery. I hope he finishes that high.
