Monday Rockpile: When does baseball season start?

Nothing out there on the Rockies right now, so how about suggestions on things you'd like to see in the coming year on Purple Row? Humorous or serious, let's share 'em.

Did it ever really end?

Baseball season never truly ends. It simply shifts to different phases. Currently, we’re in the free agent signing phase :)

I actually care more about off-season baseball news than I do about the in-season news in the other sports. That’s not to say that I don’t follow the other sports … but baseball is life. The other sports are merely long foul balls down the line – nice to ooh and ah at for a short while, but considerably less substance :)

My next steps

In the last 3 years the Rockies (according to the media anyway) have gone from an oddity where balls float like balloons in the wind, to a well rounded team tha can actually pitch. I am a long time fan and I understood that a rough time was in store when O’Dowd made the commitment to build the minor leagues into one of the best in baseball so that the team did not have to go out and compete financially with the large market teams. I am very glad to see all the hard work paying off and I am looking forward to the next steps. In no particular order.

1. Play better within the division. I don’t think I need to explain that one.
2. Cut out the long streaks of offensive dormancy. I know this team can hit with anyone in baseball, it just seems to be boom or bust.
3. Ian Stewart and Chris Ianetta need to get it going at the plate. (That will help #2)
4. Continue the growth of the pitching staff. I am really looking forward to a staff of Jimenez, De La Rosa, Cook, Francis and Hammel. Street leads a bullpen that should be able to lock down most late leads. What concerns me is will guys like Chacin and Deduno be able to fill a hole if someone gets hurt and will they be ready to be full-time starters in 2011 when/if the Rockies loose guys like De La Rosa.
5. Do a better job of controlling the running game of opposing teams. This is a task for pitchers as well as catchers.

I am sure there are other, but those are the 5 that float to the top of my mind 4 minutes before my next meeting. Gotta run, I look forward to seeing other’s opinions.

What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????

by FlyAway on Dec 21, 2009 8:57 AM MST reply actions

Stewart and Iannetta

need to start hitting more line drives or start striking out a lot less… or both otherwise they’ll always be .240ish batting average guys and incredibly frustrating.
Also, for Iannetta (and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who thinks this), dude needs to get more aggressive at the dish or at least learn to protect the plate better.

Honestly, if Stewart, Iannetta, and Fowler make a few small improvements to their respective games, it should have a good impact collectively

Also, I might start Cargon in CF and Fowler in left…

Small improvements

along the lines you mention from those key players could be the difference between a good season and a great one.

(However, I took the same approach with the Nuggets this year, hoping that JR and Nene would take the next step and…well, looks like another decent year at best.)

by Teekalong on Dec 21, 2009 3:02 PM MST up reply actions

Cargo and Fowler

Cargo has the better arm so I would be OK with Fowler in Center, Cargo in right and Seth Smith in left. The cool thing is Carlos can play left right or center so if they hang on to Hawpe (7.5 million for a backup…eehhh) then you could still put Cargo in left and keep his bat and speed as well as Fowler’s speed in the game.

What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????

by FlyAway on Dec 21, 2009 10:21 PM MST up reply actions

Cargo and Fowler and Stewart

are all greener going into 2010 than Nene and Smith were going into this season so hopefully the hope can be justified…

Welllll

I was looking at his minorleague defense stats and cargon’s been pretty up and down (so has Dex), but his body of work in the bigs is pretty impressive.

I think Dex can definitely be a plus center fielder – I just really don’t want us playing him in CF over Cargon (if Cargon is better) just because Dex “seems like the type of player who makes a good CF”

Future of Purple Row..

I’ve really enjoyed the growth of PR over the past year. The articles by the new writers have added a lot of substance to the format. Jabbs writes some high quality FO pieces which honestly, probably go over the heads of many of us here and his pieces about MLB contracts should be used by a few of the front offices around the league. RMN and PF are solid writers, I’ve really enjoyed their work and professionalism over the past year (the Marc Gustafson series was unprecedented). I’ve also enjoyed the new format, live updates, and mobile options (if only I had a mobile phone to use this option). That being said, I believe the site has plenty of room for growth.

Suggestions for the Future
A) GT Gamecast – gamethreads should be built inside a gamecast options so we can follow pitches, up-to-date stats, bench players etc. Yahoo has gamecenters, why can’t SBN use it’s partner to embed one into the GT without drawing too much bandwith?

B) MOre collaboration between NL West SBN writers. PF reached out to other writers in KYF and that was awesome, but I would like to hear more from the heavyweights that I respect such as RG, Jim Mc, Eric of TBLA, etc.

C) MLB Player Diary – Is there a way to get a player to write a weekly/monthly diary on PR? Does anyone have contacts out there? Even if it’s a minor leaguer or a BP pitcher with time on his hands between innings.

D) More Rox Girl

As to A

I prefer to have the Purple Row game thread and the MLB Gameday in separate windows. I think that it would be difficult to scroll between game action and comments in the same window, especially at the rate folks here chatter during games. If you’ve got 2 screens, having Gameday up on one screen and the Purple Row thread up on the other is really convenient.

As to C: yes, please.

Hey you guys

I see Stan Kroenke is 0.1% away (in terms of number of shares owned) from having to make an obligatory bid for Arsenal FC (one of the Big Four in the EPL). I see he owns a couple of Colorado clubs – what do people think of him as a prson, a businessman, an investor etc?

by biondino on Dec 21, 2009 10:14 AM MST reply actions

He completely turned the Denver Nuggets around

from laughingstock of the league to contender. He created two local cable channels just for his sports teams. In the past, he likes to make a big splash with his investments, put extra money forward into offering a competitive product. I think he has been a fantastic owner here in Denver.

ROCKEFELLER!!!

by Muzia on Dec 21, 2009 10:16 AM MST up reply actions

for the most part he's been pretty hands off

as an owner. He’s given the teams good leadership, and enough money to make the right decisions.

He is a HUGE soccer fan, which is why he bought the share in the Arsenal.

As a business man his money comes from investments in retail shopping centers and malls, which has taken a hit the last few years. There was some pure speculation that might affect his sports holdings, and if you ask the Avalanche (Hockey team) fans they will say they got the short end of the financial pie…though I’m not sure if that is accurate to say/claim

by Redhawk on Dec 21, 2009 11:12 AM MST up reply actions

That was more a product of the Avalanche FO not adapting quickly to a salary cap

Basically, Kroenke understands that spending extra money to give fans a good product is a profitable business.

Except for the St. Louis Rams. But they always suck and he has been trying to sell them for years.

ROCKEFELLER!!!

by Muzia on Dec 21, 2009 12:00 PM MST up reply actions

IMO

and this is a pretty uneduated opinion, but as long as Pierre Lacroix is involved with the Avalanche, they’re going to have trouble working under a cap. Before the Cap, the Avs were the Hockey Yankees, and the RedWngs were the Hockey Red Sox. Now that there’s a cap in place, the Avs have kind of become the Hockey Cubs or Mets, and the Wings remain the Hockey Red Sox.

This offseason is completely boring.
http://www.youtube.com/user/rockiesmagicnumber

by Andrew Martin on Dec 21, 2009 5:10 PM MST up reply actions

Um, no

The Avs were never like the Yankees. Who was their biggest free agent signing, Smyth, who was signed when there was a cap. Without the cap, the biggest signing was Selanne and Kariya, which were not that big.

The won because they were so horrible in Quebec. They had a ton of good young players when they moved to Denver. They supplemented with a handful of good trades at great times. The downfall that we have seen of the team was when the great Quebec draft picks slowed down. Now we are seeing the next wave of young talent.

Hmm

I know very little about soccer (except that you can’t touch the ball with your hands, unless the refs aren’t looking) … but I’m guessing that it’s not an accident that he’s 0.1% short of this threshhold – and that perhaps he prefers not to make the bid, but to simply sit on the sidelines?

Now I’m primarily interested in Opening Day tix; does anyone know what they’ll be doing with the selection winners? Would they get a chance to buy tickets for multiple games, or a select game, or only the full set of games (Opening Day+RedSox series)???

Purple Row

Great job Russ, Rox Girl, and other contributors to the site. I would like to see the following on PR:

1. Press passes and interviews with players and other members of the Rockies organization

2. Quick links to commonly used sabermetric statistical metrics/charts describing what is average, good, all-star, and superstar for us non sabermetric fans

3. More fans on The Row

Thanks for a great season of Baseball!
I'll be back next year for another ride.

May I ask

Respectfully, why do we want PR to get credentialed to be more mainstream? What unique good will it do? The reason I started (and one of many that I continue) to read this blog is because it is not poisoned by typical mainstream nonsense (i.e., deference to players/management due to need for access, etc). We don’t need more guys covering Tracy’s boring postgame conferences or getting “we take it one day at a time” lines from the players.

Now, if you can get a spy in the FO to start dishing inside info, that’s another matter…

Third-ed

Access to the FO and/or players would be great but at a certain point would affect the articles that are being written (even inadvertently). The top-notch writing and analysis here is what makes the site unique and valuable. Real access can be a double edged sword, even if the writing is respectful of the organization (as Purple Row is).

More interviews like the excellent one with Marc Gustafson would be very welcome however.

by phishbate on Dec 21, 2009 3:11 PM MST up reply actions

For me

1) free seats, and in a cushy press box

2) inside scoop. I figure just hanging out and around, would learn more than the mainstream outlets report. (and really besides the DP and the Rockies own Harding, and the Inside the Rockies guys, is there really any outlets at all? and one of them is paid for by the Rockies!)

by Redhawk on Dec 21, 2009 2:56 PM MST up reply actions

that's just it though

no doubt the mainstream outlets have tons more information than they report…and yet, we don’t hear it. Why? Because as soon as that stuff started coming out, access would be denied. Would be no different here.

by Teekalong on Dec 21, 2009 3:05 PM MST up reply actions

I think the key

would be to write it more like a gossip page, and leave out key names. No self respecting journalist would do that. But…as I look around this blog….I’m sure there are a few that would trade in self respect for free passes to Rockies games.

by Redhawk on Dec 21, 2009 3:15 PM MST up reply actions

I dunno, an anonymous gossip page

Doesn’t exactly scream classy or trustworthy!

I think we have to accept that by and large, PR will report what the Rox are happy to be public. Even if we had a mole on the inside, too much classified info and they’ll either clam up, fire the mole, or give PR trouble.

Which isn’t to say I wouldn’t love more exclusive info! I just suspect sourcing it will be difficult to impossible, and even as an unofficial website we need to be prudent about our relationship with the club.

There will always be a difference between and blog on the internet and the so call mainstream media.

Purple Row has a unique niche in Rockies’ coverage, in that it represents the opinions of fans, not the organization itself or the media. The writers all have a unique point of view, as do the people who post here, on what is best for/what we should value in the Rockies as a team and as an organization.

In my opinion, access to the organization (see the Gustafson interview) makes this place better, because it allows fans a chance to ask the questions we really want to know the answers to. I don’t see how press access would change the nature of this site.

by Justus on Dec 21, 2009 3:41 PM MST up reply actions

To revise:

It should say so-called, not so call.

Also, it’s kind of a moot point, I don’t know that any blog will ever have full press access into an organization. There’s still kind of a Pandora’s Box stigma with blogs (as Russ has alluded to).

you are right

and I’m not worried about this place turning into an extension of rockies.com or anything, but to me I just find most of what folks with access dig up to be…well…boring. Getting someone who could ask legitimate, hard hitting questions, and get real answers, would certainly be worthwhile. I just don’t see this blog (or any source) getting that kind of deal, so to me I’d prefer that the site just stick to its current format and style.

Though I certainly don’t begrudge anyone who can turn some internet thoughts into free tix…

Hard hitting journalism at the Denver Post

New article by Saunders about how the Rockies should lock Carlos Gonzalez to a long term deal. Nothing new here really, just some irrational musings by Saunders. Pretty irresponsible for him to write clamoring for them to lock him up, without any mention of the fact that Boras is his agent. Anyone know when the last time Boras locked up a pre-arb player was?

by Hizilla on Dec 22, 2009 2:01 AM MST reply actions

I think the last time was 1942

Back then, Boras was keen to have his war replacement pre-arb players locked up through their first three FA years, because he was smart like that. Keep the replacement players paid long after Ted Williams came back from the war, not the WAR.
