New Year (Decade) Roster Thoughts

The other day I had a few minutes (actually was up to my a$$ in work, but this was more interesting than actually working) so I spent some time pondering the 2010 opening day roster and have been looking for answers to questions that have bothered me so - many of which have been debated here already.

By my count there appears to be 6 open roster spots on the projected opening day roster.

1) 5th starter

After the jump I'd like to take a look at some of the possible answers come April 5th.

Star-divide

Question 1: Who fills out the rotation?

Answer 1:  Jeff Francis -  Francis Circa 2007 would make this quite a rotation, however, asking him to be that good this soon after major surgery seems foolish.  It seems to be stretching it to even ask him to be ready by opening day.  I would prefer for him to start the season on the DL and be ready to slide into the rotation come May/June and provide quality innings later in the season.

Answer 2:  A Young Gun - At some point Chacin, Reynolds, Rogers and Smith are going to need to step up and compete for a big league spot.  If Smith and Reynolds can recover from the injury bug and Chacin and Rogers can build upon their big league experience, the Rox could have some quality internal options.

Answer 3: Free Agent Market - As in the past the Roxs are not in the market for any of the expensive B-level options still remaining such as Garland or Davis.   However, if this market remains soft through late January, maybe the talent willing to join us on minor league contracts will be better than past years.  Redding is one name I've seen - Any others that might tweak some interest?

Answer 4:  25-man roster cuts - Not sure who might be available when it comes time to finalize opening day rosters.  Al a Jason Hammel.

Question 2:  What are the options for long-reliever?

Answer 1: A Young Gun - Anyone of the above mentioned young starters could pitch their way onto the roster in a long-relief role as a stepping stone to the rotation.

Answer 2: Free Agent Market - Contreras is still available, but his demands are still to high.  Any one else that might fit this role?

Question 3: Who's ready to step into an occassional late inning pressure situation?

Answer 1: Last Year's Injured - Buchholzand Corpus have both performed well in the past, however, I believe Bucky isn't expected back until mid-year and Corpus may prove to be a one-year wonder - an expensive one at that.

Answer 2: Last Year's Feel Good Story - Daley will have to earn his spot in the pen again this year.  However, it is my understanding that the second time through the league he was lit-up as hitters figured him out.

Answer 3:  Fresh Blood - Couple of names I've read about, but don't know enough about are Lindsay and Deduno.  Deduno has been a starter, but I've read he will be better suited for the pen.  Lindsay I believe was hurt at one point in his career, but appears to have had a decent 2009 so he could finally be ready to contribute.

Answer 4: Free Agent market - The market for this lot has not materialized and could provide plenty of inexpensive options come January.  While many of the available names are recognizable, I'm not sure if any are suited for our needs.

Question 4: Are we going to need a back-up or platton back stop?

Answer 1: Paul Phillips - He filled in nicely for a month last year and could probably do so again IF Iannetta provides the 120-130 games of solid play we all are expecting from him.

Answer 2: Free Agent Market - Apparently the market for catchers all hinges on Molina signing some where and then it will be a quick domino effect from there.  I'm preferable to picking our own poison rather than having the market pick it for us.  It's time to pass on Torrey and sign a serviceable backup or two to minor league contracts who can compete with Phillips.

Answer 3: Mike McKenry - Unless he performs out his a$$ in ST, he'll spend some time in the Springs.

Question 5: Are we hoping to find a cheap starter at second or are we looking for a utility middle infielder?

Answer 1:  Free Agent 2B - Hudson, Lopez  and Johnson are still available but I'm guessing they will end up with contract offers just a bit outside of our range else where.  Other serviceable back-ups are still out there, but I'm not sure what their contract demands are - Belliard, Hairston, Kennedy, etc.

Answer 2: Trades - Uggla is available but he doesn't fit our cost profile.

Answer 3: EYJ -  Could use regular playing time in the Springs, but a strong ST could make him the front runner.

Answer 4: 25-man Roster cuts - Would be nice if we could find a nice serviceable back-up come opening day.

Question 6: Do we need a right-handed corner infielder or the Golden Thong?

Answer 1: Fernando Tatis - Seems to have support from the Row.

Answer 2:  Jason Giambi - Would like a DH job in the AL.  Would be nice if he would sign a minor league deal that would allow him to leave if he wasn't on the 25-man.

Happy New Decade to all on the Row!  Thanks for rekindling my love for the Rox and the game itself.

Put simply:

1. Francis or Smith gets in the rotation (Smith only by injury)
2. Belisle is the swingman at present.
3. Daley and Corpas will fill out the bullpen barring a re-signing of Contreras/Beimel
4. Miguel Olivo will most likely be the backup catcher if Torrealba is not re-signed.
5. EY2 will be the super-utilityman
6. Tatis would fit best in CIF, though Giambi could work I suppose.

Adding Hudson would be the only thing that the Rockies could do to really shake things up IMO.

OK - a few more questions then...

1) How likely is it that Francis is going to be good to go Opening Day and be able to pitch all year long – effectively?

2) Where do Chacin, Rogers and Reynolds start the year?

3) Besides the Redding rumor, are there any other intriguing starters that might be willing to come in on a minor league contract??

3) When is Buchholz tenatively going to be back?

4) How healthy is Corpus? One hit wonder or serviceable bullpen help?

5) Can Daley make the needed adjustments to be effective in his sophmore season?

6) Is Lindsay healthy?

and

7) Does Deduno have the stuff to be effective at the next level?

(6) Lindsay – Healthy, yes. A run in with johnny-law in the Dominican sent him back to Australia.

1) I think we have to be very cautious with Francis but all the reports I’ve heard are very good. He doesn’t have to be the 07 Francis, he just has to be a solid middle to back of the rotation guy if he’s healthy. If he gets hurt again then I think things become wide open.

Answering, your first six, then your next seven

1) Presumably, all three. Dan O’Dowd likes signing minor league free agent roster scraps for injury purpose (like Kip Wells, Redman, Eaton), and starters like Chacin, Rogers, Deduno, Reynolds, and Smith will be the first line of defense should someone be injured. The Rockies are going into Spring Training giving Francis every opportunity to be in the rotation, and will most likely stick with him as the first month back could be rocky.

2) As Jabberwocky said, Belisle is the swingman, though the Rockies seem to be high on Deduno filling that role should an injury/struggles occur. They are open to bringing Contreras back but he’s looking into Japanese leagues right now and it’s going to cost a couple million we really shouldn’t be spending to bring him back.

3) Resigning Beimel is something we could look into, as he’ll probably come cheap, but I trust that Daley will be good in 2010 by looking at his K/9 rate and relatively stable BABIP. He could see a little regression due to his delivery. As for Corpas, he wasn’t bad in 2009. His FIP was close to what it was in 2007, and it seems injury was a big problem for him. I think he’s an excellent bounceback candidate, and the Rockies would be foolish to be scared off by his deal and trade him. You’re right in thinking of Deduno and Lindsay to being able to step in, because they have the stuff to, but you can’t forget about Casey Weathers, who was on the fast track to the MLB before Tommy John Surgery, and knows how to pitch in pressure as he’s a natural closer.

4) It looks like Torrealba won’t resign with us, so we might pursue Miguel Olivo to be our backup, but I believe that would be a foolish move, since he can’t catch or take a walk to save his life. If we’re going free agency, our best option is Rod Barajas, because he easily is the best defensive catcher out there and is coming off a career worst year. Seeing as Barajas probably wants a starting job, I think we should suck it up and start Phillips and deal with it, because spending money on a backup who could be useless could hurt our chances of signing another guy to a long term deal or signing a guy like Hudson. Iannetta was extremely off last year, but even then, his 2009 wasn’t even bad because he OPS’ed over .800 which is great for a starting catcher.

5 and 6) (answering both together): I’ve repeatedly said that signing a guy like Lopez or Hudson to be the starter at second and moving Barmes to the corner/middle utility man would make the most sense because like it or not, we need a stable bat at second, and while Hudson probably isn’t as good as Barmes’ glove anymore, signing him off the scrap heap for 5 million is an awesome option since Barmes is great against left handers, has the glove to play solid anywhere in the infield, and has power. It would open up our lineup a lot, in my opinion, because Barmes, while streaky, would play well in that role. While Barmes doesn’t know how to play first, Tracy has said repeatedly that Hawpe can sub at first, which would give us our dream outfield of Smith/Fowler/Gonzalez, our we find room for Giambi to come back.

Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.

The first took longer than I thought, and these are eight questions! :P

1) With Francis, I think it’s going to be more of a problem getting back into rhythm early on, and I think he’ll get stronger as the year goes on. I don’t know how much the injury would linger, but I’ve heard about nothing that it well, so I’m expecting a rough first half, but a great second, as I think Francis still has the ability to go all year. Even if he doesn’t, it’s not a problem, because we have a plethora of starters in Triple A who can do well in the fifth starters role.

2) They all start the year in Triple A and wait until a bullpen job or a spot in the rotation opens up, and the best performing will most likely get the gig as far as I’m concerned, that is, unless someone impresses enough in Spring Training to get a job, but that’s unlikely.

3) I don’t know, to be honest. Our Triple A rotation is going to be pretty full without Redding and a pitcher like Deduno will probably be bumped to the pen for him. I think we’re best off signing one guy to be a veteran sixth starter/longman to a minor league deal like Redding and call it done. I trust the younglings enough to perform well if a starter gets injured.

3) My guess is June or something like that, when Buchholz will be pitching again. He’ll probably come up in the second half when someone is inevitably struggling.

4) I don’t know the specifics of Corpa’s health situation, but I believe he’s healthy enough since Tracy is putting him in the bullpen next year. I don’t think he’s a one hit wonder: he’s posted FIP’s below 4 every year in the majors, no, I just think he hasn’t been lucky with injuries and BABIP’s.

5) He seemed to be going strong at the end last year, he got past most adjustments made to him by hitters, and his K/9 was a lot higher in the second half rather than the first half, which tells a certain story.

6) Lindsay seems healthy, he didn’t end the year on the DL, but I don’t know the specifics on his status.

7) Deduno easily has the stuff to succeed in the MLB, the question is if he can control his pitches a the MLB, because that’s what killed him in the minors.

Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.

Short answers to your questions:

1. I’m not bullish on Francis’ longterm or short term health—the injury was just too severe to predict a full, healthy, effective year for him. Fortunately I like the Rockies’ depth especially if the FO recommits to Morales in the rotation. If not, Greg Smith will fill in fine until Chacin, Rogers, et al are ready.

2. Chacin and Rogers could start in AAA, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rockies put them at less hitter-friendly AA Tulsa. Reynolds (I assume you mean Greg) is likely in the same boat, provided he is healthy.

3a. Noah Lowry is an intriguing name that has been thrown around (and is preferable to Redding IMO).

3b. Buchholz is supposed to be back around the All-Star Break, though I wouldn’t count on a ton of production from him this year at all (maybe as a September guy, but that’s all I’m reasonably expecting from him).

4. Corpas’ stock is at a low right now and IMO it would be a mistake to deal him unless the Rockies can get solid value. Corpas has been great before and I have confidence that he can put it all back together again.

5. Unlike RMN, I’m not terribly high on Daley—it seems like he’s due for some regression. However, he seems like a bright guy and Apodaca has proven to be very adept at making these adjustments.

6. He appears to be—I wouldn’t expect him to contribute in 2010 though.

7. I’ve pegged Deduno as more of a bullpen guy from what I’ve seen of him—and I think that he could be an effective set-up man in the Show.
