Why does Billy Beane want Aaron Miles
Miles career OBP/OPS — .322, .678
Barmes career OBP/OPS — .299, .714.
They’re both good defenders who can play multiple infield positions.
Miles probably comes at a cheaper salary.
They’re roughly equivalent players.
So the other question to ask is, why does Dan O’Dowd want Barmes?

1) Lack of clearly better options financially
2) Defense
3) Last member of GenR?

In reading Neyer's blog
it sounds like Beane was after Fox, and got Miles because the Cubs wanted to dump his salary. Fox has definitely put up big numbers in the minors.

Bobby Crosby news
The Red Sox signed Marco Scutaro to be their starting shortstop, blocking one of the only places Crosby could have gotten a shot at starting at short. This increases the chances of Bobby accepting a bench role with the Rox if they indeed choose to go that route.

I haven't seen this mentioned here yet
but what do people think of Joe Crede as a backup at third? He’s risky injury wise, but as a backup to Stewart he could be rested enough to stay healthy. He could be had on a one year deal for cheap money because of his history. And he’s an excellent defender with decent power. I think he could fit very well here.
by RoxnSox09 on Dec 4, 2009 10:27 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd rather have Crosby than Crede.
by WolfMarauder on Dec 4, 2009 10:38 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Why?
I feel the opposite. Last year they put up similar numbers, but Crede had better power. Crede has had much more success over the course of his career. As far as defense, he’s considered one of the better defensive third basemen. The injury issues are indeed real, however.
by RoxnSox09 on Dec 4, 2009 12:04 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
When you're a bench player, power is not as important as versatility.

Crede can catch though
It really doesn’t matter. Crede will be looking more for a starting job somewhere, although I doubt he will find it. Crosby has probably resigned to knowing he will be a backup.

As back-up catchers go
the Rockies could do worse, but this doesn’t really excite me much. I think it’s due to the fact I don’t see much up side here at all. 38 year old (will be 39 in April) catchers are usually hanging on. I was hoping for a player that if the Rox were forced to start for a period would be respectable.
by Redhawk on Dec 4, 2009 9:27 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs

I think Zaun ends up with the Mariners, and we eventually get Yorvit back for something like 1 year, $2.1m, or 2 years, $4m.

i'd be good with a contract like that
i definitely think getting him back under a new contract is the best catching solution. he has experience with the pitching staff and provides clear competition to iannetta for the starter job, more so than some of the other vetran-y options.

It's one I worry most about
not so much up-side, but being able to play everyday or at least consistently, and by that I mean at a productive level. Now that there is no steroids to keep legs fresh, I think well see more splits in catchers time which means both catchers have to be “starters” in talent.

.357 OBP last season?
Sign me up. It’d be a huge boon, and a safe move on the defensive side.
Does anybody have the links to the conversation in the comments threads from last season about the virtues of Hudson at 2B for the Rockies? I seem to remember the consensus being that it’d be a good idea, as long as it was short-term and low cost. This would be the year for that. Unless someone still wants to bring in David Eckstein.
by deacs on Dec 4, 2009 12:49 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
actually, I would have always been happy with Hudson,
but I’m especially happy now that signing him gives zero benefit to one of our divisional rivals.
by Rox Girl on Dec 4, 2009 1:01 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I know
But I can’t let that go. Seemed like everyone would’ve liked Hudson last year, but we were operating on the belief that the relative production gap between him and Eck/Barmes would be mitigated by the salary difference. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
Plus, as you mention, there was the draft pick. And having Barmes’s SLG and defense AND Tim Wheeler (is that what the Rox would have lost?) outweighs one missed year of Orlando Hudson.
One year/$5M plus incentives to $7M, with a $5.5M team option ($500k buyout)?
by deacs on Dec 4, 2009 1:08 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, it actually turned out a lot closer to being true than it looked like it would early in the season
And the end result of the decision didn’t hurt the Rockies that much, obviously. Still, I’m not going to lie and say that Hudson wouldn’t have helped.
by Rox Girl on Dec 4, 2009 1:14 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
How much does he cost for 2010 though?

This would essentially serve as a swap between Atkins and Hudson on the budget.
The way it is stacked up right now, we’re already ~1-3 million over (depending of course on the salaries for our arbitration players and how they turn out) our budget last year, which was already the highest budget in team history.
I believe if we truly want to be signing players like Hudson, Hawpe and possibly Corpas have to be traded.

I'm still of the opinion that the organization will eventually realize that trading Hawpe is in their best interest.
Other than that, there’s a lot of room ahead on the offseason, but it seems that they intend to hold onto as many players as possible, sans Atkins as of now. That could change, but when, who knows.

I don't understand when Ringolsby says
Barmes could get as much time playing in the super U role. He’s certainly not getting any of Tulo’s ABs. Q got zero time as last year’s super U. Platooning with Stewart? God, I hope not. I hope if we brought in O-Dawg he plays every day, right?

Q’s role was less ‘Super-utility’ than ‘25th man/break glass in case of emergency’. Super-utility is a guy like Chone Figgins who gets a start a week at every position he plays. And I wouldn’t be against Barmes getting 2-3 starts a week at second or third even, considering how badly Hudson wore down after the first two months last season.

and with our pitching to contact style
Glove is far more significant in the lineup than a bat. We don’t need Barmes to hit for a high average (though it would be nice) but we do need his Gold Glove at 2nd.
Plus when he gets hot, he gets H-O-T
by Muzia on Dec 4, 2009 1:59 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
that's what i was trying to get at
i believe hudson is better than barmes overall discounting salary. though i think saying “worse glove” is selling hudson’s defense short, barmes has an excellent glove, many 2Bs would be a downgrade on defense. but if barmes is still on the roster he’s perfect for late game defensive subs.
i think the argument is moot though, hudson will not be a rockie

can't see how the money works
unless they have a trade or two (hawpe) ready to go. i just doubt they’ll get a trade done that will free up the money to get hudson signed (assuming we could sign him to a good deal). i’m a big fan of hudson, i just doubt things will come together

One other reason why I think having Hudon in the lineup would be extra benificial
is that he is another high OBP guy. Last year all of our starters except for Stewart and Barmes had an above averaage OBP; in other words the pitcher could rely on the bottom third of the lineup to get outs. If you sign Huson you replace a .294 OBP with a .357 OBP and leave only Stewart’s .322 OBP as below average. Now all you need is for Stewart to improve (and I think he will) and you have a lineup where everyone has an above average OBP.
If outs are the currency of baseball, the difficulty for a pitcher facing this lineup should grow exponentially. Does that make sense?

As of now, he makes my hypothetical 2010 roster as a benchman.
But I won’t shed any tears should somebody else supplant him. He could be a great tool for us, but I see no evidence he is ready. Keep in mind, of course, I said the same thing about Fowler, and while he wasn’t perfect, he was most certainly ready in many aspects. It’s not a decrying of EY2’s talent, or even what he could bring to the team. He’s just not somebody I make an extra effort to get on the team come April.

Interesting what you say about Fowler.
Dude was far from being an all-star, but I think we’re all happy with a lot of what he did and see it as an encouraging rookie season that indicates many seasons of strong play in the major leagues. All I know about EY2 – and it’s probably less than almost everyone else here – is that he’s a step below Fowler in both talent and potential. So no, I won’t cry if he’s kept out of the big leagues, or if we trade him – after all the talks of EY2 being a key piece in purported trades all year, I’m slightly surprised there hasn’t been more mention of it in the off-season.
by biondino on Dec 4, 2009 3:14 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I was more than happy with Fowler's rookie performance.
He overcame several typical rookie flaws, and any flaws that were there weren’t any more serious than those typical rookie flaws, which can be overcome.
It’d be nice if he avoids a sophomore slump though.
by WolfMarauder on Dec 4, 2009 3:16 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I would think that signing Hudson would preclude signing Crosby
In other words, EY2 would still be an option for the Quintanilla position. I think the team’s suggestion that Hawpe could finally play first suggests this.
by Rox Girl on Dec 4, 2009 2:05 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
It could, but I'd stack it otherwise.
Hudson pushes Barmes to the EY2 role, and we still need someone who can play first base. We could teach Barmes and return Hawpe there (if he’s still here), but I’d still want the 1B option of Crosby.
by WolfMarauder on Dec 4, 2009 2:07 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
This is why I don't like discussing hypothetical situations in such detail.
I always feel silly applying such organization to players who don’t really stand a chance to show up on the team anyway.
by WolfMarauder on Dec 4, 2009 2:10 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I just don't think that's how the team would see it.
It makes more sense if you sign Hudson, push Barmes to the role you envisioned for Crosby with the exception of first base, and use Hawpe to spell Helton instead because the team still has a glut of OF’s. Adding both Hudson and Crosby is a bit superfluous and expensive and while I wouldn’t put the former past the front office, I don’t think they’d be doubling up on the position. What’s more, and crucially, I doubt whichever player is deemed the lesser of the two (probably Crosby) would be interested in the Rockies at that point given the lack of available at bats. Either of them could find much more playing time elsewhere if they’re going to be the secondary bench option here.
by Rox Girl on Dec 4, 2009 2:12 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
We agree here.
It would be expensive, which is why I wouldn’t specify Crosby for the role, possibly someone cheaper would work fine.
I can certainly see how Barmes + Crosby would be a tad redundant, but I’m also still banking rather hard that Hawpe ends up traded, and in THAT situation, we really are left with no one to play 1B, and we’d need our fifth benchman for that role.
by WolfMarauder on Dec 4, 2009 2:15 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
It'd also be somewhat nice to have a right handed alternative to Helton should we need it.
But far from necessary considering Helton’s general transcendence of pitching splits.

This is going to seem odd,
but I wouldn’t be surprised if the team would actually prefer signing Crosby to Hudson just because of the presumed ability to get him in at a relative bargain and a clearly defined role, and are just using the O-Dawg as a leverage tool in the same way that he is using Detroit, Boston or wherever. Because of the added complication to the Hudson plan, I could see them looking into that as a secondary option, but I definitely see signing the players as an either/or scenario, which still leaves EY2 as the most likely to get that last bench slot at this point in time.
by Rox Girl on Dec 4, 2009 2:23 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't find it odd at all.
GM WolfMarauder would sign Crosby over Hudson too.

by Andrew Martin on Dec 4, 2009 2:56 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Does GM RMN keep Hawpe and reintroduce him to 1B, or does he sign a cheapo free agent for it?
I don’t see why you think barmes would get that many more PAs than Crosby would. Crosby would be filling in mostly for Helton (who would need regular spelling), Stewart, and Barmes.
Barmes would be filling in for just Stewart and Hudson.
by WolfMarauder on Dec 4, 2009 2:59 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
GM RMN is pissed because GM RMN had a couple of paragraphs typed up and then somehow mashed "refresh" or something equally stupid
Barmes and Tulo play 155+ games apiece, Hudson is a 130 game guy IMO. I don’t see him playing 150 again. That gives Barmes a bunch of extra PA at 2B, along with all the LHP PA he’ll get at 3B. I probably overstated the excess number of PA he’d get over Crosby, but you see my point.
GM RMN does NOT keep Hawpe, much as I have a soft spot for him (he was my first Rockies avatar on another website, the caption read “The best player you’ve never heard of”), and instead looks at Jason Giambi, Ross Gload, Nomar Garciaparra, Tony Clark, Fernando Tatis, Doug Malphabet, Mark Loretta, Ruch Aurillia, and at least makes a phone call to Nick Johnson and Troy Glaus.

No matter what he says, you can bet DOD is fielding calls and offers for Hawpe.
by Muzia on Dec 4, 2009 2:51 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
There are several advantages to maintaining that position.
1. Posturing. O"Dowd wants other teams to come to him rather than make him the beggar, and they have.
2. Pacing. Waiting to see if there is a market change for him, perhaps after the Hollidays and Bays of the market have been signed, and the losers are left desperate.
3. Uncertainty. The discussion of Hawpe as a backup 1B is very much real, and there is almost certainly some consideration that if the Rockies are unable to land a satisfactory replacement, biting the bullet on Hawpe’s $7.5 million may be worth keeping over using that money to grab a whole lot of nothing. Plus, we don’t know how much FA money we’ll be budgeting towards Betancourt/Torrealba/etc should they find their way back.

When we were looking at second basemen a month ago I didn’t want him because he was a type A and I thought the Dodgers would offer him arb. If you put him a second, the pitcher becomes the oly easy out in the Rockies lineup.

I really don’t see how Figgins is THAT much of an upgrade over Beltre…
by Hizilla on Dec 4, 2009 3:07 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Beltre is such a good gloveman that I don't see at is an upgrade at all

Over the past 3 years
UZR/150 actually likes Figgins just a hair better…
by Hizilla on Dec 4, 2009 3:12 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
well wOBA also likes Jeff Baker's 2006 extrapolated
what does straight UZR say, because I don’t care what Figgins might’ve done

Straight UZR Past 3 Years:
Beltre – 23.7*
Figgins 21.1
*In 39 more games
by Hizilla on Dec 4, 2009 3:15 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
ah, gotcha
is that just at 3B, or is that overall? (yeah I could just look this up but I’m not)

by Andrew Martin on Dec 4, 2009 3:17 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
3B
I’m sorted on 3B Defense, so I assume it is just games played at 3B, but who knows.
by Hizilla on Dec 4, 2009 3:19 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
that's cool
thanks for the info, I thought Figgins was average-to-above-average

Having to deal with Ichiro and Figgins at the top of that lineup
is going to be a pain in the a$$ though.
I wonder if Bud Selig will give the Yankees a receipt with their World Series purchase
by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Dec 4, 2009 3:36 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
if you think about it
they’re losing Beltre, gaining Figgins, so really it’s a step down

*defensively
we’ll see if that OBP shows back up again, or if he goes back to being Chone Figgins
Hope got in my eyes
by Andrew Martin on Dec 4, 2009 1:51 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
What do you mean by this...
His OBP has been pretty decent to spectacular his whole career, unless I am missing something?
by Muzia on Dec 4, 2009 2:11 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess I'm looking more at OPS, his OBP has been decent to spectacular
that .390 OBP in 2 years are pretty awesome, otherwise he’s mediocre to decent/good

by Andrew Martin on Dec 4, 2009 2:58 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
well yes I suppose so, I hadn't considered Beltre being gone
I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if last season was Figgins’ career year

agreed completely

damnit. I wanted the rox to trade for him so badly.

Crosby is interested in going to the Tigers, and they want him too.
Could put a dent there.

The Brewers signed Trent Oeltjen.
Not exactly important, but he’s a name we saw a lot in Spring Training the past few years in Tuscon with us on the Diamondbacks.

I've read somewhere that the D'backs are likely to offer Conor Jackson a contract
It was doubtful for a while, it was a weird injury/illness he had
by djmbluemoon on Dec 4, 2009 2:03 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
part of it is that they just don't have a lot of options otherwise...
And because of the Valley Fever, Jackson actually fits pretty well in their price range right now. He’s actually a pretty decent early bet for Comeback player in 2010.

Hehehehe. The Yankees are cutting payroll.
Yaaay.

I don't believe them

I don't either, but it's fun to pretend.
by WolfMarauder on Dec 4, 2009 3:42 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, well
they cut payroll last year…
2008: 209Mil
2009: 201Mil
I hardly think that counts either though.
by Hizilla on Dec 4, 2009 3:45 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
It really dosn't count
They had more coming off the books last year than most team’s entire payroll and they added almost all of it back.
I wonder if Bud Selig will give the Yankees a receipt with their World Series purchase

I'm ok with Hudson.
Granted we can find good trades to move Barmes and Hawpe. That would be awesome.

Rox have contingency plan as according to Troy Renck...
see here
Highlights:
- Raffy B. leaves, team goes after LaTroy H.
- Also have Justin Duchscherer in their sight
- Mark DeRosa is added to the list of potential balanced lineup pick ups
- Mentions O-Dawg can fall into Rockies’ price range
I got nothing.
by nkrause on Dec 4, 2009 5:17 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
I'd pretty psyched with O-Dawg coming to Coors...
Like mentioned before, wouldn’t have to worry about finding the right handed backup infield for 2nd/3rd since Barmes would be that guy; Hawpe can back up at 1st; EY2 gets chance in outfield, infield at times (and pinch ran for speed); and O-Dawg improves offense. Like RMN said before, to keep O-Dawg fresh, Barmes will get playing time so he won’t lose at bats there. I think it would be an ideal pick up.
I got nothing.

Dear Rockies - Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster of a season! NL Wild Card Champs. Best turnaround in MLB history for a team to win the Wild Card. Can't wait to do it again next year!
Troy Tulowitzki - MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba - Re-sign!! he's en Fuego!!
Brad Hawpe- I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utleys in a single bound!

If he signs and Betancourt accepts arb
Then we can probably wave goodbye to our good friend Corpas…..
