PrintAlright guys, sorry this is late, but let's dump as many trade rumors as possible in here.
Brian Bruney was traded to the Nats, and that's superduper exciting, I won't lie (lying).
Brett Myers is getting interest from the Rangers and Astros and other teams, but his 2-year requests are being met with balking.
Speaking of the 'Stros, they're not going to be able to crack the pocketbook much. Be thankful, Astros fans, because you know that they'd just dump a lot of money on a one-dimensional player who really wouldn't be worth all that much.
Adrian Beltre is set to decline arbitration, so enjoy the draft picks, Mariners' fans!

The definition of insanity
…is trying the same thing over and over again while looking for a different result. Why does anyone think that Milton Bradley will change his evil ways? Do they expect he’ll turn into a model citizen (or even a respectable one)? It’s not money he’s after. He already has truckloads of green. The guy is a complete nutcase and is certain to explode like he always does.
Can you spell anger management?
The good news is that he’s not tied to any Rockie rumors.

…but I would definitely think about Edwin Jackson. Young, throws hard, coming of a good year. I have no clue why the Tigers don’t want him. I watched him pitch for the Rays 2 years ago and he looked very good (except perhaps for the straight fastball).

Do the Tigers have too many young, healthy, starters? The most value is keeping him, I would say. Maybe they are trying to make their fans think they’re trying to improve the team by dangling the guy.

Apparently it’s not doing too well financially. There’s reason to believe the Tigers may be adversely affected as a result of their ticket base being, you know, jobless.

The rumors about Cabrera are entirely false.
Granderson has been “fished”, but the only real trade candidate is Jackson right now. Tigers themselves have confirmed to their fans that they will not be holding a firesale.

Chris Carlin of SNY reports that there's no truth, and there have been no talks between the teams

Morosi at Fox says Mariners and D-backs have been interested,
and implies there’s definitely something afoot, just not to the Mets.
Mets themselves have denied talks, but more than one source claims that the Mets did in fact meet with the Tigers about Jackson.

one person whispers the sentence to the next to the next to the next, and finally the last person says what they heard.
In this case, the joke is that they were playing telephone /buckleybox
You see, the television adult cartoon “The Simpsons” made by Matt Groening, featured an episode where the teachers went on strike. In the interest of stirring up trouble, mischievous young scoundrel Bart Simpson, who is the oldest child in the family the show centers around, the Simpson family, whispers a rumor to one of the protesters that the teachers were going to cave. Now, you see, as it goes up the line, the words become messed up, as in the game Telephone/Chinese Whispers, and amusingly enough, the actual message came through, but had the words “purple monkey dishwasher” attached to the end, as people evidently misheard something to attribute to the formation of said words.
Alternately, Google might’ve turned up something much faster than all of this. For all of the misunderstood terms.

My guess is that it's a situation where the Rockies know Milwaukee's needing payroll for help with their pitching
And that they would be more willing to part with Hart than other more integral position players. So it’s a situation where they hope the leverage brings the Brewers back to earth in trade demands and simply a matter of leaving the bait out there for awhile.
It's funny following this through the chain.

It doesn't always work that way,
Supply’s short on SP’s, sure, but there’s also a shortage of demand from the top end of the market. The Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers, Angels and Phillies all appear to be mostly uninterested is free agent starter’s right now. I don’t think Lackey gets as much as Burnett.

Schierholtz really isn't that good.
Not starter worthy on a contending team unless there are better players around him. They could do better.
Only know
He has consistantly put up solid numbers at every level he was a everyday player.
Has one of the more accurate and strong arms in the league.
And can run fast.
Which is all a mute point if your on the bench.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s definitely MLB worthy and not some AAAA player, he’s just not a guy that you build a team around, even for a season, and if they’re trying to deal Sanchez, they’re looking for a player with more offensive impact than Nate. It’s like us claiming that Ryan Spilborghs could replace Matt Holliday last year. We knew that offensive difference had to be made up somehow. The Giants have plenty of Spilborghs types, but only Sandoval as a real impact bat right now.

I guess my thinking is Sanchez himself has been a starter then to the pen then a starter then to the pen then to Fresno then a starter then to the pen,,,, then a no hit and bam now he will comand a big bat. Would you give up even Spilborghs for him? I take that back. that might be a good deal.They have Bumgardner in the slot and are offering up the odd man out.
It will take a Sanchez and probably one or two high minor league prospects to get the calibar of bat they need to compliment Sandaval. But I would have Nate in the line up 2 to 1 over Winn last year.

Question
How exactly do these Winter Meetings work? Are there actually organized, scheduled meetings? Or do all the GMs just hole up in their own hotel rooms (or conference rooms) and meet with each other as they please?
Both.
There are organized events, receptions, etc, with time in between for teams to meet with agents, players, and representatives from other teams.

The Diamondbacks are considerably better than their 2009 record indicated, but it would take a lot of good luck for them to get to 85 wins, and even at that level they are unlikely to pass the Rockies without some bad luck from our team. I think he overestimates them, but the implied underestimation of the Rockies really amused me.
He lost
me after his first suggestion, “Don’t panic.” He mentioned nothing about towels after that.

Frankly, what he said makes some sense
They had fluke injuries to key players and some of their young guys regressed. They still have a good shot at being a decent team next year. Don’t sleep on them.

Buying into the Diamondbacks requires some leaps of faith:
1. That Brandon Webb is completely recovered from shoulder woes
2. That Stephen Drew and Chris Young are a lot better than they looked in 2009
3. That Miguel Montero is as good as he looked in 2009
4. That they will get a pair of starters for the back end of the rotation that can perform at a productive level
5. That Tony Abreu can replace Felipe Lopez
6. That the young bullpen doesn’t regress
You’re talking about a lot of dominoes that have to fall into place. Again, I don’t think they’re as bad as they were in 2009, but at this point they really seem to be aiming for a reload in 2010 and then hopefully another go at contention in 2011 if things align right.
7. The Rockies, Dodgers, or Giants don’t have everything go right and win 93-95 games.

If I’m unimpressed by the Giants off season, I could see the D-backs rebound to pass them, but the Dodgers and Rockies seem out of reach at this point without a some real kismet.
1. Webb prob won’t be CY caliber next year, but if the surgery went well, he should be solid, or maybe better. Dude’s a horse.
2. Stephen Drew is better than his 2009. He is still an above average SS. Chris Young I am also not a fan of, but he can’t be worse than his 2009.
3. Montero may come down a bit, but Chris Snyder is coming back. I would guess that one of the two has a good year.
4. Yeah they need starters, no debating that point
5. I don’t know much about Tony Abreu, but Ryan Roberts was pretty good last year. Who knows, they might sign Hudson
6. Bullpens can be constructed for cheap, and you don’t really know how good they’ll be until the season begins.
I mean, yeah, they would need quite a bit of luck to contend next year, but they aren’t the Nats or the Royals. I like the look of their young guys, and they have a bunch of key players coming back from injury. We shall see I guess.

Better than the Dodgers? Upton sure, but otherwise, there isn’t a position that they have a large enough gap on Colorado to make up the ground they need to. In the rotation, I think you’re overestimating Webb, but we’ll see on that, my point is that he’s as big an unknown as Francis is for us at this point and I don’t see the D-backs going after a quality back-up plan like we are by targeting Duchsherer and others. That lack of pitching depth has killed them the last two years and it will kill them again and again until they are able to address either internally or by acquisition.
They are certainly a good sleeper team
but the extent in which he takes it is a little overboard

He was nails last year, and he struck people out and didn’t walk anyone and was just studly.
But without knowing any of that, and just looking at his stuff, he doesn’t look like he should be that good. His fastball is good but not overpowering and his breaking stuff really doesn’t snap that hard. In fact, he kind of reminds me of Corpas. Maybe I’m jumping at shadows here.

He's done fine in the playoffs
before. I’m not sure how much he has to “learn”. His year was nearly his best ever. I am convinced that his problems in the playoffs were much more due to his September injury, and facing some of the best hitters in baseball while less than 100%, than to any immaturity or inexperience.
I'm going by what Street said after the playoffs.
He took a lot of responsibility and said he would learn from it and grow. My comment wasn’t an attack on Street at all.

I completely agree with you on why Street was not god this year in the playoffs
but he was actually not good in 2006 either. He had a 7.11 ERA in the playoffs with the A’s. Remember the Ordonez walk off HR to win the series.

He wasn’t smoke and mirrors, and neither is Street. He has had good stuff for a while. First round pick, rookie of the year. We could question Matt Daley’s success, but I think Street has been good enough for long enough not to be worried. He’ll regress some, but not to Corpas’ level

I think its just that there is more happening in baseball. Such as the big hits, or the huge strike out or defensive play.
In Hockey, the guys are just skating around around with a puck and stick. They got the power play and there really is no other elements too it or nothing that really “stands out”. I don’t know a lot about hockey, but that just my opinion about the sport.

I share this opinion as well...
hockey is too exhausting to watch (takes too much effort to do it properly) and I never played it, so I generally ignore it.

I didn’t used to be able to, but now I mostly can (though I certainly lose it every now and then). It helps when you sort of understand the game enough to know where the puck might be going, too.

as the overall balance is there for us. I think the teams in the NLW are a lot more balanced and closely related than any of those teams in the ALW.

Take it or leave it:
“Raffy” is a horrible diminutive in Spanish. I don’t know and have never met Betancourt, but I do spend time each day with Venezuelans…and I speak fair Spanish. “Raffy” is pretty much not available as a nickname …and if it were, he would probably send you a fastball when you weren’t looking.
If you know him and know better, then I apologize for this post…
Of course, you can call people what you want, but I recommend “Rafa” as a name of fondness….or, super-pushing it, as if he were nine years old, then you might call him Rafaelito.

I’m watching a local sports show in New England and of course they are talking about the Red Sox getting Matt Holliday (which is bad enough) What’s even worse though is one guy says he dosn’t want Matt Holliday because Oakland proved he “couldn’t carry a team” and his error in the playoff series against LA proved that he “couldn’t get it done in the clutch”. He goes on to say that his numbers with the Rockies were inflated by Coors field and everything he did for the Rockies in 07 dosn’t show he can get it done in the clutch because there’s no presure when you play for the Rockies.

My brother-in-law just moved to Houston
and his company freaked out over snow that didn’t even stick one day last week and ordered everyone to go home at like 11am. The weather cleared up a couple hours later. He thought it was hilarious.

Would have been nice to have him. But I ain’t crying over it. Would have been nice to have the flexibility to have Francis protected incase of injury/crappyness and have the protection be useful in the pen.
I saw Duchscherer fulfilling Contreras role with the Rockies
I loved the job he did, and I think it would be valuable for us to have another guy who can pitch multiple innings + spot starting + protection for Francis. He was a damned good set-up man with Oakland as well.

when you’ve got the chance to lock up a 38 year old catcher with a .280 OBP for $6 million over two years, you’ve got to make that deal. Especially if you had the worst record in the majors last year.
