Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said earlier this offseason that such a move would be the "wrong message to our fans." However, the Jays are decidedly no better than fourth in their division, and Ricciardi has apparently changed his stance. Wouldn't Roy look good in purple?

I'd love Halladay

but who would you move for him? Chacin? Fowler? Hynick? 2 of the 3? Stewart? It’d be a great move for Colorado, but how much would we be giving up?

I am not close to an expert on building trades

But I would not be opposed to giving up a SP prospect like Hynick. Whether I’d be pro-moving Stewart would largely depend on how Atkins rebounds to start 09.

I'm really just throwing names out

out of our Prized Posessions, who are we willing to part with for a pitcher of Halladay’s caliber.

I wouldn't use Chacin...too excited for him

Maybe Morales or Hynick. Or both. We have a lot of minor league SP talent

Good move for you guys.

I have to think that Halladay, as more of a ground ball pitcher, would be solid at Coors.

He grew up in Colorado

So he should know how to pitch at altitude.

Around the trade deadline, I was pimping these talks pretty hard

If we got Hallday, I don’t see how that doesn’t put us as favorites in the division.

This is gonna come down to an issue of establishing value based on age and overvaluing prospects.

Any idea on Halladay's contract status?

I would think if he’s signed through, say, 2012 or so, you’d have to consider giving up something like Hynick + Stewart, for the benefit of a top pitcher under contractual control for 3-4 years.

I’m not trying to suggest that’s the right offer to make, but I think it would take at least that much to get him, if not something like Morales/Hynick, or even Chacin/Hynick.

But if he’s only signed through 2009, there’s no reason to give up the farm to get him, because even if the West is winnable, it’s so easily losable that it’s not worth giving up the future rotation for a one year iffy shot.

Just a guess,

but I would think if he were signed through 2012, there’d be no way he’d be available for trade, short of external circumstances. (Like Peavy and the Padres)

contract

Halladay is signed at a reasonable $14.25MM this year and $15.75MM for ‘10. Ricciardi also said the Jays could attempt to extend Halladay’s contract this spring.

So then the question is...

….would the Monforts be willing to add a net $20million to the payroll from 2008 to 2009?

I’d hope they can see the writing.

Troy Renck's take from today's chat

“It would take quite a haul. Ian Stewart would almost certainly be involved. I can’t see the Rockies giving up Chacin. I talked with Ricciardi this winter and he called Halladay the face of the Blue Jays. To even consider moving him reflects the team’s economic woes. They didn’t sign a single free agent to a major league contract. Their one signing was Kevin Millar. Halladay isa game-changer. If he’s out there, the Rockies need to make a strong push to bring hom the local kid”

So who would y'all be ok trading to get Halladay?

Stewart, Fowler, Chacin??? Someone else? What’s the limit?

by pedalpusher on Feb 17, 2009 7:33 PM MST up reply actions

I wouldn't go as far as...

Fowler and Chacin.

Depending on how you rate priorities, I suppose my upper limit would be Fowler and any one other on the list not named Chacin, though I’d really hate to give up Dex. I just think CarGo’s still enough of a long term possibility to be willing to make the deal. But I wouldn’t be truly comfortable unless I was sure we could get at least one more year of Halladay.

Probably wouldn’t even go as far as Hynick and Chacin, when you consider Halladay is only signed through 2010. But just about any other two player combination between Hynick, Stewart, CarGo, EYJr, and Morales would work.

I’d obviously do Chacin straight up, but that’s a non-starter with the Jays, for obvious reasons.

Renck said

today that he wouldn’t imagine Chacin would be available, but that we’d have to trade “a haul”…and that starts with Stewart.

I'd hate to lose Shades

But if it would net Halladay, I’d learn to live with it.

Not to be offensive but Halladay whos 32 would want to go to a team in a position to win.
So why would he move from Toronto to Colorado…especially when you put a mediocore team such as Toronto in the weak NL West they’d have every chance to win the division.
Halladay needs/and deserves to be on a winning team he was probably the best pitcher in baseball last season.

by Ohpityme on Feb 21, 2009 9:18 AM MST reply actions

Well you can't put Toronto in the NL West, so that's not an option

Toronto is one of 7 teams not to make the playoffs since Clint Hurdle took over in 2002. In fact, their last playoff appearance was the Rockies first year of existence in 1993. They are currently looking up in their division at three strong teams that don’t figure to fall back any time soon, and the Rockies (who are 18 months from the WS) are in a very winnable division. It would be a big upgrade to come to for him Colorado.

If you’re using the playoffs as a measuring stick of winning, there are few teams that bury Halladay’s chances like the Jays, even if they were above 500. Doc is also from Colorado, so home comfort is something else to add. Does he even have a complete no trade clause?

And he won’t turn 32 until 1/3 of his starts in 09 are complete, not that it matters greatly

Rockies were in the World Series less than 2 years ago….

especially when you put a mediocore team such as Toronto in the weak NL West they’d have every chance to win the division.

Three issues with this statement:
1. The Blue Jays are an AL team.
2. Toronto is appproximately 1,508.52 miles from the nearest NL West city. (Denver)
3. The Blue Jays kinda…. um… how do I say this with sensitivity? “Suck”.

Not true

There’s a lot of good talent there, and yes, if they were in a worse division, they’d perform better.

But that’s not really fair to the other teams in baseball. You put any team in baseball in some magical “worse division” and they play better.

As it stands, Rios, Snider, Chops, Litsch, Marcum, Carlson, League – all very good talent, and had a good season last year.

Problem is Tampa is in a much stronger “continued success” point than the Jays are. Or, Rays > Jays. I’m clever.

Timing and luck have a lot to do with a baseball team’s success. Who has their breakout year, and more importantly, who ELSE is having their breakout year? The Jays just had guys slump and break out at all the wrong times in the past several years.

Oh, and Vernon Wells’ contract isn’t an arbitross at all.

Point of that was

The Jays SHOULD trade Halladay. They could get a very nice MLB/Near-MLB return for him, and it would fit well with the young core their team already has. Basically, their GEN-R 2.

Gen J?

Nahhh

True...

it’s not really fair to say the Blue Jays suck, I suppose, when they have to face the strongest division in baseball. And of course, they’re not even the worst team in their own division.
