Francis will be out until at least September. Looks like Tuesday was D-Day for him after all.

It's About Time

now we know where the rotation is going and that Francis should be better next year.

He should have done this months ago

My opinion – he need not rush to be back for September. He’d need time to shake the rust off anyway, and I think we have enough SPs that would contribute more than a rusty Francis…just prep for 2010.

Have him go pitch winter ball if he’s ready in the fall…

Well apparently

The pain didn’t really start flaring up until the middle of the offseason. It didn’t become clear until recently that surgery might be necessary.

I guess since I'm still

considering this a transition year, it’s not so bad to have more room for prospects to establish themselves… still a bit of a bummer though, but not the least bit surprising.

by Resolution on Feb 19, 2009 12:20 PM MST reply actions

Yeah, well

If Francis were to pitch like he did in the first half of ‘08, I’d rather he just have the surgery.

by Tom (RFTN) on Feb 19, 2009 3:13 PM MST up reply actions

I agree-

Would have been nice to have seen Francis take care of this in the 5 months leading up till now.

Transition year? Transition to what? We were in the series two years ago! I hope we’re not back to “Todd and the toddlers”, “kid rocks” and any other cute name that’s more of an excuse for continuos poor play-minus that three month stint of unbelievable coolness.

Two years ago?

It was more like one year and four months…

I’m just saying…

Transition as in

Tulo, Jimenez, Stewart, Fowler, and hopefully someone out of our pool of young pitchers needing some time to adjust to or develop in the majors. There’s a ton of unproven or unrefined talent on this team. Hopefully 2010 will have the young talent established as well as Francis back…

why he waited so long?

that’s what i just don’t understanding he could of done that months ago and been rehabing by now

Sigh

Better late than never, I guess. Now when do we go after Halladay?

Question for the Rowbots

OK, all, I have seen a couple of blogs and seen a couple of comments about the Rockies going after Roy Halladay. I think that most of us will agree the Halladay is one of the very few true Ace pitchers out there. Using your brain and not your hart, what do you honestly think the chances are of him coming to the Rockies? I know he played high school ball in Colorado (Arvada I think) but do you think that will have much of an impact on his decision to come here. Also, if you do think he will come here what do you think it will cost the Rockies in a trade? Will the BlueJays take some prospects or will it cost core players like Hawpe or Stewart?

My opinion is that at a little over $14Million his contract is big, but not unmanagable for a player of his calaber. The Jays will want quantaty over proven quality and the Rockies are pretty strong there. However, I don’t think they should use guys like Chacin and Fowler because changes are as soon as Hallady comes up as a free agent the Rockies will not be able to afford him anyway.

Your thought?

What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????

by FlyAway on Feb 19, 2009 2:36 PM MST up reply actions

the only realistic scenario

I see at the moment is if Doc—well past his prime—signs with the Rockies as a free agent to finish his career in Colorado. anything else is wishful thinking.

Not a great idea

Getting Halladay would probably require us to send the Jays at least two of the three of Stewart, Chacin, and Fowler, and possibly another prospect. The Rockies’ farm system has thinned out over the last couple of years, so we can’t really afford to give up too many prospects.

by Tom (RFTN) on Feb 19, 2009 3:15 PM MST up reply actions

At least...

Two of those three and likely another throw-in. Maybe something involving CarGon but still too steep price-wise. We might still be able to get something else done with somebody for Atkins. Maybe Seattle for Bedard or the eventual Joe Crede loser?

by Since1993 on Feb 19, 2009 6:34 PM MST up reply actions

We have

what? a quarter of our payroll locked up with Helton. Halladay doesn’t really fit economically. Also, we’re not a team that can say our only missing piece would be one pitcher – that is to say that getting Halladay doesn’t help solidify the OF, give us a good 2b etc.

typos

quantity and not quantaty and chances are as soon…… not changes are as soon…

I need to learn how to type….

Oh Well

He tried to make it back this season. His shoulder just never healed right. At least we still have depth, and Atkins in our back pocket if need be.

Surgery may ruin his career ...

PickAxe writer here …

My buddy who suffered a torn Labrum in a college track accident has been emailing me about how awful the whole thing is and saying rehab is terrible.

Also found this article about Labrum surgery from Slate Magazine in 2004 that makes this injury sound like a career changer or career ender.

3%

The story indicates Francis has about a 3% chance to return to his old self.

SI

The news post on SI claims that the MRI still shows no damage and that the surgery is exploratory (with the implication being that they are anticipating finding a torn labrum ).

Be interesting to see how this actually unfolds.

by MADness on Feb 19, 2009 4:08 PM MST reply actions

Exploratory Surgery ...

Apparently the only way to find the tear in the Labrum is through exploratory surgery.

by Nate Timmons on Feb 19, 2009 4:13 PM MST up reply actions

It is...

when they find what they’re looking for and operate on that. It won’t be the ‘exploratory’ part that knocks Jeff out for 09.

"Francis has a torn left labrum"

That’s as clear and to the point as anyone can be, and that’s what Tracy Ringolsby wrote. Perhaps he’s jumping the gun, but it sounds likely…

Stick a fork in Francis

he’s done. The injury is pretty much a career ender for the type of sling pitcher he is. I saw many guys in the minors go down to this type of injury due to delivery flaws and motion. I was watching the 22 inning game the other night and it seems thats where his season went arwry.

Recover

I hope whatever the news turns out to be that Jeff can get back. Sad thing to see such a promising career finally come to fruition and then get derailed like this.

Here's hoping he comes back better than ever

Can we get a “countdown to spring training” clock or something? The dog days of the NBA/NHL aren’t getting it done and the Terps, well, the less said about that, the better.
