Spilly signs with Boras...
Didn't know if any of you caught this, but in the article from the RMN titled "Rockies Report: Francis Undergoes Surgery", it states that Spilly has made the change from Danny Evans, a former Dodger GM-turn agent, to Scott Boras. According to Spilly, it was time to make a change.
Thoughts?
My first reaction is grrrrrreat... but whatever. If I was a ballplayer, I would hire the guy to get me the best deal out there, too.

Holy crap!
Well…. I guess that’s what we get for both using the top return on Google Images.
Incidentally, I would have posted the pic here, but I know that Russ is just itching for a chance to ban me.

It's kind of that
But it’s not as if he’s a heralded superstar prospect who just completed a decent rookie or sophomore season and then hired Boras
This comes off as more of a “Who do you think you are” kind of feeling to me.

In the article
I’m just glad to see Francis surgery went well. I hope he doesn’t try and rush back for September so he can be healthy for next year.
As for Spilly, I think he is in the game to have fun and win. Boras is respected and helps his players by giving suggestions. Spilly has to take the suggestions and apply them.

I can tell what Spilly's thinking....
He’s take that $72m 4 year deal.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I was emailing my dad about it earlier
And he HATES Scott Boras. I mean, no big shocker there, but yeah.
I hate to say it, but I’m on the verge of siding with Spilborghs on this one, but I still am on the precipice as I think that he may be getting ahead of himself.
To explain how I could possibly support a Boras client, I paste the following:
Dad: Well, I guess this is his last year
RMN: Not necessarily. He has at least 3 years until he’s eligible for free agency. I think the Rockies have wasted him in his playing time the past 2 seasons, maybe he’s just trying to get the most next offseason when he enters his first arbitration year.
That said, I do wonder if he’s getting ahead of himself.
Dad: Scott Boras is poison. To me Spilborghs just issued a sort of ultimatum. He’s history next year. Period.
RMN: I seriously wonder that as well, and I wouldn’t doubt it either. With Fowler potentially ready by midseason 09 or Opening Day ‘10, I get the guy feeling that the organization is going to overlook his good numbers once again and make him a bench guy. He’s earned a starting spot, and I think he’s more or less saying by this “you treat me like a starter or I’m gonna play dollars and cents with you.”

Spilly sees the writing on the wall, aka CarGo and DEX...
Knows he has fan appeal, and figures he’s got one year to capitalize. He’s going to end up in Oakland next year. With his .407 OBP and .875 OPS, Billy Beane’s computers will draft him for their Roto league.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Spilly and Boras
Spilly is a nice player, a good player..not a great player. Getting Boras as his agent is a curious move. Will it help Spilly in Arbitration? Is this a move for Free Agency? Does he expect to make $20 mil a year when he does become a FA? (cause I think he needs to be an everyday starter first)
Boras is poison…he’s trouble. Spilly’s skill PLUS Boras isn’t a headache I expect the Rockies to put up with for much. Also the Rockies will be looking to make room for CaGo and Fowler in the OF….looks to me like Spilly just volunteered his spot.
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
Keep in mind that Boras doesn't only deal with teams
But he’s also good at lining up his players with corporate endorsements. This is why I think Spilly actually might have made a wise move, because he’s proven to be a charismatic person. Evans is a baseball guy and might not necessarily have all the ins outside of the baseball world that Boras does. I see the switch as about maximizing his earnings off the field as much as on, and I can’t fault Spilly for that.
Interesting counterpoint
But are you taking that stance entirely, or are you just putting off the obvious consequences when Rockies money becomes involved until you have to address it?

Rockies money that will be involved will be limited
To whatever Spilborghs gets during his slave years. I don’t think that’s a major issue. Boras usually doesn’t haggle much during a player’s arbitration phase, you see very few of his clients go to hearings . Once Spilborghs reaches FA, he likely wasn’t going to be re-signed by the Rockies anyway given that they would still have a full outfield and players like Charlie Blackmon knocking on the door at that point and the team would be wiser to take a flyer on rising talent such as them than declining talent. I love Spilly a lot, but the reality is that if the Rockies have to deal with Boras for a contract with him, it would mean a lot of stuff had gone wrong in the next three years.
I don't see how a .900 OPS is not great

I don't fault Spilly one bit
And truth is, Boras doesn’t just have the cream of the crop clients…he has others.
I don’t expect taking on Boras to end up forcing a trade before a first arbitration year, because Boras isn’t going to force a multi-year contract…he insists on his clients getting to FA, unless the teams WAYYYYY overpay, which isn’t going to happen in Spilly’s case.
What I do see is a likely departure before the end of the ‘10 season, but if CarGo and Dex the Wonder Kid fulfill expectations, we’d be looking at that anyway.

This depends on Seth Smith as well
Because Spills and Smith are the players without a home when Fowler arrives. I mean, they’ll be splitting LF, but who ends up being better?
Smith-Fowler-CarGon (Hawpe at 1B eventually) looks just as good as Spills-Fowler-Cargon at the juncture to me. Except Smith is younger.

Hawpe at 1st
I’m not sure that necessarily ever happens, because don’t Hawpe’s contract and Helton’s expire at the same time? If so, it’s not inconceivable that Helton retires and the Rox don’t resign Hawpe, and even moves Atkins to 1st (all of this wild conjecture of course).
Looking at what happens after ’11 requires a much larger crystal ball than we have available.
But yeah, even though I’m a Spilly fan, I don’t take issue with an eventual Smith/Fowler/CarGon outfield over a Spilly/Fowler/CarGon

Well yeah, if Helton retires and we keep Hawpe
That becomes obvious…but a lot can happen in three years. That would be my preferred solution based on who is currently on our roster and in our system, but really, it strikes me as even more cloudy than trying to project when a minor league stud will be ML-ready.

What to expect from Spilly in the next couple of years...
He will go from a guy who loves Denver, made it his home and wants to live here forever, to a guy who is mistreated by management, misunderstood by the fans, and for whatever reason, deserves something better, even though the other side of the hill may not be greener…in fact, it may be Oakland.
That is what I always see with Boras. He turns the player against their former team in order to eliminate the possibility of them wanting to take a “home team discount.”
The difference is...
Spilly is far more replaceable than Holliday….at least until anyone sees what he does over playing 155 games in a single season.

Addition to my thought...
I guess I’m also in the boat where he won’t be here much longer. His age will factor in as well as outfield spots. I agree he sees Dex and CarGo making there way to Denver and is getting prepared to split.

Ask Johnny Damon and Mike Pelfrey
For some reason a lot of Boras clients were invested in R. Allen Stanford’s funds and had their assets frozen when the investigation started.

Well,
that’s the job of an agent.
More important than the ends are the means — that’s why people dislike Boras so much.

My comment wasn't aimed at the agent
but rather at a player who chooses an agent solely because that agent will get him more money. Now we certainly don’t know that was Spilly’s reason for choosing Boras. I guess I’m just saying that there are other things that I hope are being considered besides the $$$ amount of the contract.
