Spring Training Game #13: Franklin Morales vs John Lackey
The Rockies travel to Tempe Diablo today to take on John Lackey and the Angels where LA is undefeated (7-0) thus far this Spring. Franklin Morales gets the start for the Rockies with Jason Hirsh also scheduled to pitch. Morales has probably taken an edge in the fifth starter battle with his work thus far, he'll look to continue that against a well oiled Angels team.
There are other intriguing storylines with the pitching scheduled for today. If Morales does falter, Hirsh is hoping a strong appearance today puts him back into the mix for that slot, and the Rockies would probably also appreciate it if one of their more veteran candidates would serve notice to Jorge De La Rosa to not take anything for granted. Huston Street has also had his issues this Spring and looks for a clean inning, as does Matt Belisle in the hopes that he can put some pressure on Juan Morillo for the roster spot that Taylor Buchholz's injury opened up.
Former Rockie Justin Speier is also scheduled to pitch for the Angels. Their press pass also lists prospect Jordan Walden, David Herndon, Matt Willhite and Kevin Jepsen as scheduled to get work in.
Here's the Gameday link, the game is also scheduled to be on Gameday Audio.

Hmm...
Frankie vs. the Angels…
I remember that show. I didn’t like it. I’d prefer a new episode, not a re-run.
Loving Greg Reynolds for no good reason since 2008.

What about
Pedro Martinez? 2 year deal, he seem healthy and he could help with u bal, and frankie. He wont be asking for big money, maybe a slim chance?
There is also no chance in hell
That Pedro would want to pitch for the Rockies, and more than Jake Peavy would want to pitch for the Rockies. No point in blaming this on the Monfort’s, because it would never happen even if the Monfort’s gave Pedro a market level offer.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I love this idea
but I have my doubts it will happen. All of O’Dowd’s talk regarding the budget being maxed out implies this is impossible.
Pedro's price tag
seems to be too high for a number of clubs, not to mention the Rockies. Would he really be worth it just to come out of the bullpen? For an instant during Ubaldo’s dynamite outing in the WBC (when they kept cutting to Pedro warming up in the bullpen), I wondered if Ubaldo could convince Pedro to come pitch in purple pinstripes. But it was too easy to imagine him getting lit up at Coors Field…
…that, and his blue glove is a little too close to this.

Francis
It seems as if Francis is probably out for the year. If insurance is picking up the tab on his contract that could free up some cash. I think it highly unlikely they pick up a Pedro or someone else to fill the void when seemingly there are in-house candidates. Just an interesting thought about the cash they might save.

Too funny.. Torrealba.
Anybody who thinks that Hurdle won’t start Yorvit over CDI is being dumb.
Then why is Bellorin catching?
Yorvit’s DHing today, not behind the plate. Not a sign of someone being groomed to get a lot of starts there.

Though he hit into an out,
CarGo lining to the opposite field is the sort of thing I’m looking for from him. Only 3K’s in 17 AB’s so far is also encouraging, I hope this continues into Colorado Springs as his other numbers start to rise..

I'm here.
Ahem. Don’t slander Greg. I shall become Quite Cross.
Loving Greg Reynolds for no good reason since 2008.
Sorry
every time I see Timmy on TV it brings up bad memories
Sadly, I am well aware
that it would have been 1000 times smarter to draft Tiny Tim rather than Reynolds.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t still love him. I’m serious. I joke about it all the time since it’s kind of an embarrassing affliction (like hemorrhoids) but I still do actually love him. Not like hemorrhoids.
Herm. Let’s change the subject. How bout dat Ortmeeer.
Loving Greg Reynolds for no good reason since 2008.
I was at two Reynolds starts last year
I was at his first major league win (and first major league hit) against the Brewers, and then at the 18-17 Fourth of July insanity, in which he played a large part in requiring there to be a large comeback. Since it was great, I am inclined to thank him for it.
Loving Greg Reynolds for no good reason since 2008.
um
that’s like thanking the mouse for only eating half of your cheese.
But I get your logic (I think)
Well
if there hadn’t been a large comeback, I would have been Quite Cross with him for spoiling the game, but there was, so, ipso facto, I was not.
Loving Greg Reynolds for no good reason since 2008.
Its not even Timmy
who could suffer some horrendous arm injury tomorrow…but Evan Longoria, or Morrow, or basically not taking someone who profiles as a #3 or #4 at best with the second pick
Trust me, I agree.
And until Reynolds turns good, it’s going to hang over our heads for a while.
Loving Greg Reynolds for no good reason since 2008.
I for one don't fault the Rockies FO for passing on Lincecum
Hindsight is 20-20 after all. The Rockies were one of several teams to pass on him due to injury concerns. And it is still yet to be seen if he pulls a Mark Prior and ends up with less wins than Greg Reynolds. I see where they were at. At #2, you want a “can’t miss” pick, and Reynolds was thought of as such, albeit with a lower ceiling, if I remember correctly.

Ask him about the D-backs great International signs
That can go toe to toe with Jimenez/Morales/Chacin.
Miguel Montero/Tony Peña ring any bells?
Vasquez may still be good, as well. Of your three, only Jiminez has done anything significant at a major league level. Morales somewhat.
Oh — and I’m sorry, are every one of your first round picks between 2003 and 2007 starting in the majors as well? No? Just checking.
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
Who and who and who?
I’m sorry, one relief pitcher doesn’t equate to three starters, heck one of the guys you mention isn’t even a pitcher last I checked, and one “may still be good” like Greg Reynolds “may still be good.”
And nice dodge trying to change the subject to first round position player selections because you know you had a losing argument otherwise. When all your first round position players ever fuel an offense that scores over 800
runs as our offense of fourth plus round selected position players has, you can call us back.
AH-HA
I have caught you in the act of insulting Reynolds to score points with a Dbacks fan.
This debate is OVER.
Loving Greg Reynolds for no good reason since 2008.
Ha! You fell into my trap
Of thinking that I was insulting Reynolds when, in fact, I truly believe he still will be good. I also believe that Vasquez may be good like Reynolds will be, but that neither one’s there yet. By reading into it and assuming I was insulting Greg, you show your own secret doubts about his future greatness, thus, YOU LOSE!
There is a hole in your logic large enough to drive a Mack truck through.
So I’m gonna do the mature adult thing and blow a raspberry. Cuz you’re just trying to cover up the fact that you revealed your true colours.

There are no holes in my logic..,
I’ve been watching lots of anime lately and if there’s one thing it’s taught me is that this sort of stuff always works.
It has probably
also taught you that tentacles are icky.
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
I didn't dodge.
I just returned the discussion to its origin. Remember? 1st round picks? You were the one who dodged by throwing up the red flag of int’l signees, and you then narrowed the debate specifically to internationally signed starting pitchers because it strengthened your position. Fun fact: Max Scherzer’s ERA+ last year was nearly 100 points higher than Greg Reynolds’. (151 vs. 57)
I granted you Jiminez, but it’s still premature to call Morales and Chacin major league starters. Chacin hasn’t even hit Double-A yet, and Morales has a grand total of fewer than 65 IP at an ERA+ of 103. Adriano Rosario, OTOH, has thrown nearly 200 over 3 seasons at a career ERA+ of 115 — including an opposing OPS+ of 81 in high leverage situations. Montero’s a 25 yr old catcher with an OPS+ of 100 through 160 games — VERY valuable.
Oh, and I was including Carlos Quentin in the 1st round picks arg. Using your same logic, you can brag about your pitchers once your team gives up fewer than 800 runs. (You were 2nd to last in the league last year to the Pirates)
And…. after all that I think I might need to go back to sleep.
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
Ha! You fell right into my trap!
… wait, I forgot which trap this was. Anyway, this is an argument in progress. Let’s revisit after the season ends and see if anything’s cleared up.
Your trap of...
…getting me to respond to your argument and then making myself super tired? Yeah, pretty much. :-\
Next Snakepit bet? 2009 Major league WARP of Tony/Miggy/Vasquez/Mad Max vs. those of Jiminez/Morales/Chacin/Reynolds?
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
I'd actually take that one pretty quickly.
In 2008 your four combined for 3.4 wins according to FanGraphs, our four combined for 4.0 (4.4 was Jimenez alone).
In 2007 your four combined for 1.3 wins, ours for 2.1. Do you think your guys have enough to pass ours up in 2009?
Figured as much.
That’s why I tacked on Reynolds and Scherzer at the last minute — otherwise, it’s even more unequal. But no, wasn’t saying I’d actually take it — just throwing it out there. And Jim is the official vanguard of our blog wagering honor, anyway.
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
I'm not sure if I've seen more than one, but I think it's hilarious.
I love when they’re in the car and the fake Lincecum is bopping to some song and the real Lincecum is all, “We don’t listen to that.” Hee.

and also a bit freaky.

Eh... I'd trust the numbers from the past two regular seasons more than what we've seen of him this Spring.
It’s good publicity, but I don’t think the potential upside of this risk is as much as a lot of people seem to be hoping for.
That's what I was thinking
He couldn’t be worse than rolling the dice with Schmidt. I don’t think the old Pedro will ever come back. I’m not putting a lot of stock in the Spring, but it couldn’t be a negative move for them

I was actually sort of surprised that the Giants let him go so easily
He’s not a great player, but he figures to be right around his peak right now, and I actually like him better as insurance than some of the other guys they have.
Angels Lineup
So far it seems Morales has done a pretty good job (especially better than last time). Again, I’m just curious how many of the Angels in the line-up are their everyday players. Am I right to think that everyone but Evans is one fo their everyday starters.? If that’s the case I’m a little happier with all he has given up. today.
Yeah, that sounds about right
looks like most of their regulars . . . including Lackey.
