Spring Training Game #15: Jason Marquis vs. Ryan-Rowland Smith
Patrick Saunders has the lineups, as expected Brad Hawpe returns to action today for the first time since getting spiked on his pinkie finger a couple of weeks ago.
He, Clint Barmes and Todd Helton are the only projected opening day starters for the Rockies in the lineup, although Barmes won't be starting at shortstop come April. Marquis will be facing a light version of the Mariners team as well, with several of these players bound for Tacoma once the season begins. One other interesting note, former Rockie (and former and current Mariner) Denny Stark is scheduled to pitch today as he attempts to come back to baseball after a long absence.

Considering how bad the Mariners were last year
I’d hope that Marquis could have just as easy a time with them as with the Rainiers.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
Thought about posting something about this last weekend.
Redding made his first game appearance on Sunday against the University of Michigan, giving up five hits and five runs in one-third of an inning.
Totally agree with you. Potentially dodged an expensive (for the Rockies) bullet.

I live in LA
So for me, GameDay is actually ahead of KOA. lol

Gameday actually seems to be trying to attempt
updating after every batter, instead of every inning. No bets on how long this will last, of course.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
One would think that people would have more free time during the weekend.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 14, 2009 2:42 PM MDT up reply actions
That's what one would think,
but it turns out more people end up going to Purple Row when they probably aren’t really supposed to.
Hehe.
Next week is Spring Break for me, so I’ll be able to watch the weekday games for once.

I hope he gets out of it...
Adding another sketchy pitcher to our mix probably isn’t the best thing right now.
Is it time to panic yet
about our pitchers not named Jimenez and Cook?
AAAAAHPANIC
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
No.
I am not discouraged by Marquis here. Most of this seems to be the fault of the umpire and the defense.

Pshh.
Why be rational about things when you can
AAAAHPANIC?

IWhen you get to know me better...
You’ll see a lot of flipping between rationality and AAAAHPANIC mode. :D

Marquis seems to have a problem with the second
the way U-ball’s nemesis is the seventh.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
Probably because that was Hurdle's original lineup...
He must have changed his mind before the game started.
What did?
Is Marquis having trouble with the Rainiers after all?
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
3-0 according to GD
it has two scoring on Cedeno’s hit.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
1-2-3 second inning for the Rockies
Good to see Hawpe back though
This is definitely not a pleasant start...
He hasn’t had a bad one before this, though, so I guess there is some bright side in that. I always get worried in multiples, I can deal with the one-offs.
Marquis is what he is, he's preferably a #4 pitcher probably
He’s an innings eater who won’t get flustered and will keep us in most games hopefully. Judging from how Vizcaino is apparently performing we easily got the best side of the deal
It goes without saying...
but it would be great for the Rox to have Fowler in the lineup by midseason, here’s hoping he lights it up in the Springs
we are looking like crap
against the Rainers
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
They have two starters, we have three
that’s ST
Well, I'm hoping
that the Sky Sox to beat the Rainers….even in spring training.
But I’m that kinda demanding jerk

Remember when
Clement was a big time hitting prospect?
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
Fight on, Jeff!
I also remember how I hoped we would draft him instead of some other guy… Loyalty is blind sometimes.
So Herrera and Barmes ended up switching positions with each other after all?
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 14, 2009 4:09 PM MDT up reply actions
It increases their utility if they can play both sides of second...
I just don’t understand why Hurdle changed his mind in the beginning if he was going to switch them later anyway.
Saw where Biemel
is considering 4 teams, and the Rockies were listed.
I’d like Embree to make that signing unnecessary, and allow the Rockies to use that money on
PEDRO MARTINEZ
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
Well
Supposedly the Rockies already don’t have any money. I honestly think Beimel is probably bound back to LA.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 14, 2009 4:10 PM MDT up reply actions
I assume LA as well
they seem to have very very deep pockets when no one else has enough to get the crappy McDonalds Cappuccino
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
A little fixated, are we?
I’m sure signing PEDRO MARTINEZ would cure that for you, but I wouldn’t want to put the rest of us through it.
That's Sir Sidney Ponson to you...
Great actor. Oh wait, we’re talking about the old fat pitcher, nevermind.
He looked good today against Venezuela
Cept for the long balls
Already the property of a nameless rival team.

That's what I was thinking as well
Nolan Ryan is available, and he said last year, he’d come out of retirement for $20 million
Also Rodger Clemens has some free time too

2 straight hits
off the Gas Can?
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
Ahahahaha
GameDay is just fooling around, giving the same hit over and over again to every player

only one single
it’s ST for game day too

yet

nasty outing for the Gas Can
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
Where are the Rockies
on Jon Herrera now? He was like enough to be in the bigs…then off the 40 man. Is he still considered a utility bench guy? or just AAA filler?
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
He still has potential as a utility IF
But Quintanilla is ahead of him. He’ll be at AAA with consideration for callup if we’re ahving Middle IF problems.

Me too!
Who’s starting tomorrow? Hopefully Chacin, somehow I doubt it though.
We don't usually pick up hitchhikers... but I'm-a gonna go with my instincts on this one. Saddle up partner!
Please, Oh Please
let him have a bounce back game.

I am afraid
that we are about to really get assbeaten by the Rainiers.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
The win means nothing to me in the spring
I’m just sad for Marquis and Grilli.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 14, 2009 4:41 PM MDT up reply actions
So this is probably overreacting
but a few weeks ago (pre Francis/pre Manny) I was thinking we had a good chance to win the division, based on regression to mean on offense, the Marquis trade and JDLR’s really good second half. Now its looking more like a repeat of last year with the revolving door of 4/5 starters , so I’m thinking this club is going to be about .500. Hopefully Morales can step up and solidify the back end of the rotation.
We've known since the beginning of ST
That we could finish anywhere from first to fourth in the division. We can’t let ourselves forget that fourth is just as likely, if not moreso, than first. The reason not to give up hope is that we still have a team with enough talent stored away to win if it breaks out, which is not entirely out of the question. but we cannot expect it.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 14, 2009 4:49 PM MDT up reply actions
I thought this team would be .500 at best
it has no speed. It has no real talent in starting pitchers after Uballo and Cook, with the exception of Morales. It has an aging 1st baseman with a bad back that can no long hit, but is such an icon and has such a big contract, that he has to play.
Now…all that….I think 85-87 wins takes the division. Can the Rockies pull from 81 wins to 85-87 wins? They need a big year from someone to do it. Stewart, Tulo, Iannetta, JDLR has to be a much bigger impact player than they were last year to do so, imho
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
Does anyone know if
Iannetta is catching tonight in the WBC?
We don't usually pick up hitchhikers... but I'm-a gonna go with my instincts on this one. Saddle up partner!
No McCann is behind the plate again
hopefully he gets a PH again
Spring Training is like T-ball
but with out the ice cream after wards.
