Spring Training Game #16: Jorge De La Rosa vs Eric Milton

In a sign of how big a player he is, after spending all winter reading about his non-negotiaitons with the Dodgers, today we get even more useless info from the media as Manny Ramirez makes his 2009 Spring debut in the field.

Eric Milton

#26 / Pitcher / Los Angeles Dodgers

6-3

Frankly, I'm more curious about what's going on with the Dodgers pitching staff. At the front end of their rotation, Chad Billingsley I'm sure is grateful that Mannymania overshadowed his poor start from a couple of days ago, and today the Dodgers trot out one or more of their contenders for the bottom of that staff. Some places have today's starter for them being Milton, others say Claudio Vargas, regardless we should be getting a look at how vulnerable they could be at the back end this season. I hope our bats are ready to take advantage of the situation.

Jorge De La Rosa

#29 / Pitcher / Colorado Rockies

6-1

Of course, all of this will be a moot point if our own rotation doesn't show some life in the fourth and fifth slots, and for this we're counting on a productive Jorge de la Rosa. I don't put much stock at all in Spring performances, and I do believe that JDLR's struggles are being, I don't want to say exaggerated, but perhaps overly emphasized. That said, I think it's important that he shows at some point that he's still capable of the types of performances he put in the latter half of last season.

Here is the Dodgers lineup:

  1. 5         Rafael Furcal (S)            SS
  2. 30         Orlando Hudson (S)        2B
  3. 99         Manny Ramirez             LF
  4. 55         Russell Martin               DH
  5. 23         Casey Blake                  3B
  6. 5          Mark Loretta                  1B
  7. 27         Matt Kemp                    CF
  8. 12         Brad Ausmus                C
  9. 75         Xavier Paul (L)                RF

And here are your Rockies:

  1. RF Scott Podsednik
  2. CF Ryan Spilborghs
  3. LF Seth Smith
  4. DH Joe Koshansky
  5. SS Troy Tulowitzki
  6. 1B Dan Ortmeier
  7. 3B Omar Quintanilla
  8. 2B Eric Young
  9. C Sal Fasano

Here's the Gameday Link.

It sure doesn't seem like

we’ve been playing our regulars more this year.

I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.

It's a longer ST than normal I suppose....

would still like to see more starters in though

Don't forget last ST though...

… when we were still playing our AAA kids against the A-Teams of the enemy in the last week of ST.

I wonder if pitching to guys of Italian heritage will help JDLR...

Last season opponents hit .250/.330/.357 when Iannetta was catching vs. .280/.377/.497 when he was pitching to Yorvit.

by Rox Girl on Mar 15, 2009 1:51 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to say

I have no idea how those two thoughts are connected. Partly since JDLR um, isn’t Italian. That’s kinda like the dumb Giants announcer saying Manny had just got back from playing for Team Canada.

;)

I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.

by Silverblood on Mar 15, 2009 1:59 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well... Fasano and Iannetta are...

So maybe JDLR’s problem is that he understands Spanish speaking catchers too well. Look, you know everybody’s grasping at straws here anyway. I’m just throwing that out there that maybe it’s Jorge, it’s Yorvit (he’s usually a culprit anyway, why not add something more to the mix?)

by Rox Girl on Mar 15, 2009 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

On a more serious note

maybe Iannetta calls a better game?

I'm not much for giving inspirational addresses, but I'd just like to point out that every newspaper in the country has picked us to finish last. The local press seems to think that we'd save everyone the time and trouble if we just went out and shot ourselves. Me, I'm for wasting sportswriters' time. So I figured we ought to hang around for a while and see if we can give 'em all a nice big s***burger to eat!

Morillo pitching, Phillips catching.

No, he left Jake Peavy in to allow 6 runs

He keeps leaving Chipper in the 3 hole despite the fact that he just keeps King

He left Jeremy Guthrie in to allow 4 runs in 2 innings – and both pitchers were left in “to get work”

He clearly has no idea what he’s doing.
