Spring Training Game #19: Morales vs Kershaw
vs.
Winner gets to play another day, loser goes home.
Oops, right time, wrong sport.
Rockies on free Internet TV! Woot!! Well, thanks to the Dodgers for that, anyway. For those that don't like the Rockies on free Internet TV, you can always follow on crummy free Internet Spring Training Gameday instead.
Let's read the Verducci Effect into everything Kershaw does today. If he gives up a hit or walk it means his arm is toast. If he throws a four inning no-hitter it means the Dodgers are pushing him too hard and surely that arm/toast thing is bound to happen any minute now. It will make me feel better about the season as much as reading too much into Dan Ortmeier's stats this spring at least.
Besides Morales, Huston Street's also scheduled to get work in today.

I just noticed as I was publishing this that it's Kershaw's 21st birthday today
Let’s give him some reason to use his newfound alcoholic beverage consumption permission.
Hmmm....
I hope 21 year old Justin Upton lights him up this year.

I'm pretty sure the broadcast was canceled
It was removed from the media guide list and the direct link you have provided is not even opening the “This feed is not yet available” note they use as a placeholder before a feed goes up.
Still up on the Dodgers' site though, so I'm not sure.
Will investigate further.

Okay, they're broadcasting now. never mind
It appears this broadcast is run independently of MLBTV.

I'm keeping my window open just in case.
Right now all I have are rainbow bars and elevator music, a little bit before this though there were rainbow bars behind a placeholder announcing the scheduled game. I’ll be very disappointed if I’ve gotten my hopes up for nothing.
I am thinking right now....
… that this is indeed a broadcast, it’s just not being advertised, for one reason or another. Both LA and COL’s schedules advertise the game as on MLBTV, but it’s not in the media guide, and it is also using the MLB.com media window, and not an MLBTV window.

Dodgers
are doing that with a few different games this year, including a Dbacks game. Quite interesting… you would never see something like that in the NFL, for example, because of the more centralized power structure and league-wide contracts.
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
I'm now seeing the field getting prepped with the elevator music...
This will be very cruel if they cut it off before the game actually starts.

by Greg Stanwood on Mar 19, 2009 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions
My guess is they may have had to diminish the quality
To get MLB’s go ahead. If people knew that you could have quality for free, why would they ever pay for anything?
MLBTV has shown some free games this season with normal quality
The willingness to pay comes from variety, not from quality.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 19, 2009 2:15 PM MDT up reply actions
For one thing...
… it doesn’t appear they’re actually using the cameras that are located in the park. It’s as if they hired some random videographer to lay out some small cameras around the park. It doesn’t help that MLB.com does not appear to be broadcasting this at the same bitrate that MLBTV does.

by Greg Stanwood on Mar 19, 2009 2:30 PM MDT up reply actions
True.
Which is why I said “fairly”.
And 3 runs isn’t exactly a “meltdown”.
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
It is when it is the result of your own psychological immaturity
As someone already said, Chacin’s stuff is good and ready. He just isn’t. When you allow three runs because you psych yourself out, there’s a problem
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 19, 2009 2:33 PM MDT up reply actions
Morales has struggled with this as well
This Spring, luckily, that seems to have subsided, and his struggles have been related more to command issues than emotional ones.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 19, 2009 2:35 PM MDT up reply actions
Struggled last year, too.

and because he has filthy stuff,
It would be unfair to his talent to attribute all or most of his success to unfamiliarity of opponents.

Not as much a "meltdown"

Two flawless innings, then a case of baserunneritis.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 19, 2009 2:40 PM MDT up reply actions
Without context, impossible to ascribe it to immaturity
Could be a lot of reasons…umpire starting to pinch a strike zone, or a slight mechanical flaw, or tipping pitches…
I’m not trying to be argumentative, but to say that two clean frames followed by giving up 3-4 runs is automatically a sign of immaturity…hell, probably 80% of starting pitchers in the NL had that happen at least once last season.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Randy Johnson
did that quite a few times during the first half of last year. Maybe he’ll be more mature with the Giants. ;-)
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
That's possible, but from what I saw it didn't seem so much the composure issue
There was a flukey IF single/error, a seeing-eye single and one ball that got barreled down the line. Quite frankly, Morales got hit much harder in the first inning yesterday….it’s just they were right at guys.

I haven't noticed the laziness in film from last season with Oakland
But he definitely misread that off the bat. He’s got so many skills I could have seen him slacking off early in his minor league career. I heard as much as well. We’ll see if he has the maturity and humility needed now, if not Rockies fans could be in for a major disappointment. Obviously we’re hoping for something different.
Well,
this wasn’t “early in his minor league career”. It was in AAA, when he still had a shot at the Dbacks 2007 September callups. Haven’t seen any clips of him with Oakland. He did seem humble and thankful when I spoke to him, though.

means that the season is getting closer

Kershaw is getting tired. He walked Murton

Kershaw
has a nice fastball (w/ control) and nice curve, and nice slurve, and a plus Change…..
Too bad Reynolds can’t say the same

I'm hoping

I do know it.
But you can compliment Kershaw without insulting Reynolds. Hrmph.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
Well
to be fair…Tim Lincicum isn’t pitching so….I had to go with the Kershaw/Reynolds comparison
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
Geesh.
Lincecum > Reynolds > dead equine. I think Greg needs to change his name or something. Play psychological tricks. Dye his hair? Talk to his virtual double?
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
Just for fun,
let’s bring Scherzer in.

Could have been worse for Morales,
Decent for a fifth starter. Obviously he looks bad in comparison to his opponent on the mound today, but I’m okay with him at the bottom of our rotation given his potential. If this is an example of what happens on a bad day against an A lineup, we’re good. I guess the question is can Greg Smith give us better?
I am not horribly disappointed either
Fifth starter acceptable indeed.
Hey, it’s Lew Ford!

I like Morales over Smith
just based on potential. I think Smith would be a decent option as the long man in the pen as well.

I'm torn on Greg Smith.
I want him to do well as an ex-Dback, but I also want him to suck, as a current Rockie. :-(

Funny story
I was playing college baseball. A guy gets pinch hit for. The pinch hitter strikes out. The original hitter says to me, “I could have done that.”
Well
given how far from the strike zone those pitches were..he should have walked there. BUT…it’s nice to see an OBP for a young hitter. (though he seems to want to chase a little on the high ones)
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
He used to want to chase on every one, high, low, those thrown in Peoria when he was in Pawtucket,
Just limiting it to the high ones will be a big step.
Based on just reading between the lines on CarGo
he strikes me as the typical “I’ve got too much talent so I don’t have to work at it and still be better then everyone” guy…who is finally working at it, now that he’s hit other guys just as talented
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"

basically my impression, too. Two years ago, anyway. Minus the latter half.

1-2-3 inning for Street. Nice movement on his pitches….I think we might have gotten a nice bonus in that trade for whats-his-name

Age question
Just got home from work & checked out the box score & scanned the game thread.
If this is Kershaw’s 21st b-day (it’s also my oldest daughter’s … hope they don’t go out drinking together after the game), that makes him 2 months younger than J. Chacin.
Chacin got drafted very early, right? Age 17?
If the minors are supposed to prep a player quicker than college, how come Kershaw’s ready for the bigs & the Machine isn’t?
Just wondering. Haven’t ever seen either pitch.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
Kershaw
is very exceptional. And yes, he might be a little rushed..but not much. AND the Dodgers need him worse than the Roxs need Chacin (crazy huh?)
Rockies Mgr. Clint Hurdle on what needs improvement in 09: "Our Record"
When Josh Fogg is still contending for your staff
you need pitchers pretty bad.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
This is a very good point, people.
No matter how much Hurdle talks up pitching depth, it ain’t much use if it ain’t good depth.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
Fogg is no longer in contention for a rotation spot
Just for a long relief bullpen spot.
