We are doing a series of previews over at Redreporter, and I just wrote a preview about the 2009 Rockies.

Feel free to ridicule me and tell me how wrong I am.

Decent write-up

Just a few corrections/disagreements:
-Taylor Buchholz is not related to Clay.
-Franklin Morales has a lot more in his arsenal than a fastball, hence why he was an MLB top ten prospect a year ago. He also holds the franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings, so he most certainly has done something positive in the majors. His injury in 2008 might have thrown off his performance all year. He’s looked good so far in spring.
-The Rockies always put a premium on drafting pitching. They have only selected Todd Helton, Chris Nelson, Ian Stewart, Jayson Nix, and Troy Tulowitzki first in any draft. 11 pitchers, 5 hitters. The pitchers haven’t worked out as well

I’ll tell you it’s refreshing to read a Rockies preview that isn’t fixated on the Rockies’ loss of Matt Holliday. I appreciate the recognition of the solid offense despite an influx of new starters.

This site led me astray

It claims that Clay and Taylor Buchholz are brothers…

Sorry about that.

-I look at Morales’s control as a huge red flag, but I see that his overall minor league numbers are inflated by 2008, when his walk rate was incredibly high, I did not realize there was a possible injury. So you probably have a point.

-Thanks for your answer on the Rockies draft philosophy, I was a little lazy and didn’t feel like looking it up, it was just a hypothesis.

-over on RR you are right about Seth Smith, I was very impressed with his minor league numbers, I would just like him to be about 2 years younger, but 26 isn’t a bad time to break into the big leagues.

Which I didn't catch while reading the article

because it lost me after the first few lines.

A couple of mistakes I caught:

— Drinking Guinness in Colorado doesn’t make you an expert, try throwing back some New Belgium Fat Tire, or Palisade’s Red Truck.
— Todd Helton is not the face of the Colorado Rockies, he is the Beard of the Rockies
— Garrett Atkins was drafted out of UCLA
— It could be argued that losing Jeff Francis was bigger than Holliday because it moved an unproven Ubaldo into the 2 spot and threw the backend of the order in disarray.
— The bullpen lost Casey Weathers (Tommy John surgery) and Taylor Bucholz (who knows how long) to injury, causing the bullpen depth to plunge into the shallow end of the talent pool
— Chris Iannetta may have the chin to star in Team America, but he has never battled with the Film Actors Guild

Other than that I would have to say, you have a good beard. So congratulations for that.

-Sorry it was the only picture I have of myself drinking while I was in Denver, but I did have some local brews when I went out, but there were no such things in Invesco’s club room.

-I just tried to see if baseballreference led me astray on Atkins or if I just made a mistake, but baseballreference is down at teh moment.

-I cede your point about Francis

-I was too lazy to go into depth about the bullpen.

yeah baseballreference didn't list a college, so I assumed he was a high school draft pick

Quick Tip

Another good site to check out a player’s minor league/college career is http://www.thebaseballcube.com

Good writeup!

i used to use thebaseballcube all the time

but for a while they didn’t update their numbers, so I have just been using baseballreference.

Thanks

Also

Street has been lights out the last two weeks or so. He had one bad outing which is screwing his numbers.

De La Rosa isn't that bad

I don’t think De La Rosa is as bad as this article indicates. He has a good fastball and racks up the strikeouts. His main problem is mental: he is inclined toward meltdowns on the mound. However, he has apparently been talking to a therapist of some sort, and he finished well in 2008. IF he can harness his emotions, he is more like a #3 than a career minor leaguer.

We certainly hope so

Objective analysts will look at the whole picture, not necessarily what is most recent…he’s looking at DLR’s quite disappointing career and weighing it heavier than the last half of 2008. Rockies fans want to believe he’s turned a corner due to his last half, but it’s hard to say. Personally, I figure DLR is most likely to disappoint in 2009, so I can’t chastise justin007000 too much. Face it – he wouldn’t be the first starting pitcher with incredible ability and potential to be a big disappointment….

It wouldn't be the first time

JDLR wore that title as well.

Precisely my point

When a player has been in the league a few years, past performance is almost always the best predictor of success.
