Aw. NPV doesn't support my allegations.
Assuming Smith makes 400k his first 3 years, (2008, 2009, 2010) and then 600k, 800k, 1M during his arbi years, and then signs a 3 year, 6M extension, and then washes out and never works again, and assuming that I get a job in 2010 and start at 50k with a 5.2% raise annually, and assuming a .5% discount rate (from the Fed), in Today dollars, Greg Smith is worth $9,292,421, and I’m worth $4,247,813.

Discount rate should be risk-adjusted
A 0.5% discount rate implies risk-free cash stream – I would venture to say there is nothing in the world less volatile than a mediocre pitcher’s career path.
ooh good point
What would you advise then for just a simple rate?
Aw who am I kidding there’s no way that frontloaded revenue stream ever gets matched by my salary.

We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
I would use 10% for the pitcher, maybe more
And 3 or 4% for yours
Although I’m pulling those numbers out of nowhere. Unless there is a market for salary futures it’s plain guesswork.
I wonder what lawyers use as the discount rate of future earnings when someone is killed and the responsible party is sued for damages. That would be the best comp.
My Dad, an Economics professor, does consulting for this on the side. It really depends on a huge range of factors not limited to age, education, geography, gender. It’s fairly interesting topic, that someone could put a dollar value on your life based on earnings potential.

What if
you get pulled over for DUI, refuse to take a test, and the cop takes you to the hospital and gets a court order?

Probably a good call.
But, still! Then you’d hafta give blood.
We are truly in the presense of greatness here…-- unnamedDBacksfan
In Colorado
you get the choice of submitting to either a breath test or a blood test. An outright refusal will result in a one year suspension of your drivers license. It’s called express consent. By driving anywhere in Colorado, you have already consented to taking a chemical test, thus the penalty for a refusal. Court orders don’t come into play.

In Arizona,
it’s called Implied Consent. But if you refuse to be subjected to a test, the police generally take you to a hospital, get a judge-approved “warrant” to search your blood, and take a blood test anyway. So, if you refuse, basically, you lose your license for a year and then usually get charged with DUI anyway.

But you’re like 8 feet tall. I’m 5’6. The needles are much bigger compared to me than they are compared to you.

Okay, okay,
I’m actually 5’ 5 3/4" — but that actually further emphasizes my point that the needles are way bigger relative to me than to him.

It was more of a “Hey, you’re here in NY when the Rockies are playing the Mets. Are you going to be at any of the games? If so, let’s meet up.”

then the Rockies scored some runs, then the Cubs scored some more.

That reminded me of this
In the onion after the 07 WS. It was harsh, but funny:
DENVER—Days after the Boston Red Sox completed their four-game sweep to win the 2007 World Series, Colorado Rockies players dressed in full uniform were still standing on the field experiencing various degrees of shock. “We…we…we were winning lots of games? And then? Then we were losing all these games? Because the Red Sox came and hit and hit and hit and they didn’t, they didn’t stop…” said Rockies outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, pointing at the left field wall with a shaking and dirty finger before turning, pointing at the right field wall, and repeating the words he has been speaking nonstop since Sunday night. “They hit here, and here, and through the gap there, and they… Oh, God, what happened? What the fuck just happened to us?” Rockies team officials released an erratically worded, hand-scrawled statement today saying they would address any psychological issues just as soon as the World Series is over.
