I've heard
that Bob Melvin once considered batting Micah Owings (career .319/.355/.552 hitter) as the DH during interleague play, but then decided not to, so as not to insult the other batters (Tony Clark?).

simply does not have the mental capacity to take it to the next level. He has been given chances but he seems to not be able to mesh the thinking aspects with the physical aspects. He also seems to be very uncoachable.

to do that in a spring game. It simply is not worth it. I know it is one of his Hallmarks but not a good choice. He should have known better and played it off the wall. In a RS game yes, not in ST.

New Ben Franklins, we’re playing this Saturday at One Eyed Jacks on Santa Fe, and April 23rd at the Larimer Lounge.
Oh yeah, and a minor web presence at www.newbenfranklins.com (which redirects to a myspace page). It’s a re-constituted band, what we sound like now is like sonic alt-country with lots of fuzz , overdrive, and such. The tunes on the page aren’t representative, as their from a previous incarnation. We don’t start recording until next month.

I love cold weather and snow. I think living a decade and a half in the desert has given me an affinity for precipitation, and I like cold weather because then I can wear a jacket, which makes me look bigger. ;-)

but there is a sheer beauty of listening to games on the radio or audio. In my days there was only one televised game per week. All WS games were daytime and I would listen to Harry Caray and Jack Buck every night broadcasting the Cardinals with a little transitor radio and an ear bud so mom would not know I was staying up late.

Maybe I am a little younger
But I remember watching Card’s games on a little bitty black and white TV that was so fuzzy that I usually just listened to it and used my imagination for the video. This was way before the Rockies were around, but I listened to games with Vince Coleman, (Willy?) McGee, the Wizard of Oz and Will Clark. Then up early on Saturday morning to watch the Baseball Bunch with Johnny Bench and the San Diego Chicken.

Thing is, he needs a lot of ABs….so is the consensus to start Fowler in CF, start Spilly in LF, and have Smith/Murton our 4th/5th OFers?

But at least with “Mack the Knife” Bobby Darin’s is the most well-known version (or at least it is to me).
What? It was Ella Fitzgerald's signature song, practically.
Her version is probably just about as well known as Bobby’s, and Frank Sinatra’s is right up there.
True, but Louis Armstrong sang it three years earlier...
Still, Holly’s probably right in that Darin’s remains the most well known version. Which is too bad, I love Ella’s Berlin improv of it and also like the Lyle Lovett version at the end of Quiz Show.

For those of you who never got to experience the wonder
making a Spring Training bus ride from Pompano Beach to the Gulf Coast with Mitch Williams and Oddibe McDowell was a trip into another galaxy. They would crawl under the seats and give hot foeet all trip long. I went through so many pairs of cleats and sneakers I had to starve myself to use my meal money to pay for replacements. It was complete Bull Durham moments.
