Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Where are you, Rowbots?

Since we seem to have a lot of new members recently, I thought it would be fun to see where everyone lives to get to know each other a little bit better. I know the majority of us are probably somewhere in Colorado, but there are plenty of us elsewhere and it might be fun to see where our fellow fans are located. Maybe this can even facilitate some meet ups! I know I'd love to find someone in my area to go to games with.

They did this recently over at Mile High Report and it was neat to see how many places were represented. I'm sure we don't have nearly as many members as MHR and probably aren't quite as far flung, but it should be fun just the same. And maybe someone who's ambitious enough (I can't make any promises for myself) could do something similar to the MHR Around the World post.

So, Rowbots, tell us where you are! Comment with your city/state or city/country.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Snowy

It seemed as though most of the good events, cardboard boat race and trebuchet contest were postponed because of snow. The baseball games we were hosting against NM Highlands were cancelled on Saturday as well. I really don’t get into all of the extra activities but watching some of the contests is always fun and the ones I liked are postponed.

It really doesn’t matter to me though, BASEBALL STARTS TOMORROW!! (today in a slightly broader sense)

I live in Great Falls, since 1991. Before that, I was in Snohomish, WA, a Mariners fan. So, now I’m halfway between my two favorite teams, one in each league. Home team is the Great Falls Voyagers, league champions in 2008.

We don’t have any TV coverage at our house, so I have to listen to the Rockies on MLB Audio package. My wife and I did travel to Denver mid-Sept. of 2007 to see the Rockies take 2 of 3 from the Padres. I made the mistake of keeping score and missed a first pitch HR by Matt Holliday, my bad! Got to see Maddux and Hoffman pitch for San Diego, so seeing future Hall-of-Famers was a big plus.

Where is Worland?

I drive back to Montana a couple of times each year, but Worland must not be near I-25/I-90, because I don’t recognize it. I’ve been to other parts of the state too, but not as frequently.

by RoxnSox09 on Mar 26, 2009 10:32 AM MDT up reply actions

It's way off the beaten path

Next time you take I-25 through Casper, get off the highway and head 97 miles west to Shoshoni on the worst drive you’ll ever take in your life – there is NOTHING on that stretch, save a couple ghost towns and one rest stop. That will leave you 60-some miles south of where Worland is – we’re up in the Big Horn Basin, just about 90 miles south east of Cody.

Work

The thing about the sports broadcasting business is you’ve got to take whatever opportunity comes to you. Just so happened that my first opportunity to work professionally was as the voice of the high school teams here in Worland. I work as the news and sports director at the two radio stations in town. I have lived out here eight months and while I don’t figure I’ll be here forever, I have grown to like it well enough. (Having a job I absolutely love – most days – helps.)

Also, Greybull (home of Pittsburgh Steeler D-lineman Brett Keisel) has the most awesome old gym I have ever been to in my life – shame they built a new one a while back and don’t use the old place for high school hoops anymore.

TGFPR!!

by jlot10 on Mar 26, 2009 11:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Little good, little bad

Football was solidly and unmistakably mediocre – 4-4, out in the first round of Wyoming’s “Everybody Gets a Trophy Day” football playoffs (seriously, any system in which 8 out of 12 teams in a classification makes the postseason is absurd to me). Girls hoops had a rough year but they were a young team. Boys basketball was supposed to be the real deal – they had everybody back – but after a great regular season they crashed and burned at regionals and didn’t qualify for state (regionals were in Worland, too – it’s still a sore spot around town three weeks later).

I really think the entire state should go to a single class or a two-class high school system, particularly for basketball – there is some good hoops played at the 1A and 2A levels that could give the big cities a run for their money. Got a chance to see the Wyoming Indian team this year – they were so much fun to watch, I’d put that team against any high school team in the time zone.

They must have changed the system

I played HS football in Wyo, and my senior year we were winless so we didn’t make the playoffs and had to play in the “consolation game” (or “toilet bowl” as everyone called it) against the other team that didn’t make the playoffs. Of course, I had my best game ever…

When my little sister was really young, she couldn't say her Rs.

We used to say she sounded like she was from Boston. We also have a family story about her asking at school whether something was the “right bus” and the kid she asked being confused, because the bus was yellow.

It was cute on a 4-year-old. But speech therapy cured that right up.

Do not speak of such things.

I’ll lose tenure at the Snakepit.

Although honestly, since I’ll be in Denver for my cousin’s DU graduation in June, I was gonna try to hit a game anyway. (Been to games now at Chase, Fenway, US Cellular, and Shea… and probably Wrigley this summer)

I must admit

that I have tickets to the DBacks-Cardinals game on the 13th at Chase. I’ve never been to Chase (or the BOB), so a new park is exciting. Been to Coors, Mile High, Fenway, Wrigley, AT&T (PacBell), the new Busch Stadium, the Ted (Turner Field), SafeCo. Looking forward to adding another park to the list.

Of those that I listed

Fenway, Wrigley, and Busch were all the product of traveling for work. I had trips lined up to Boston and St. Louis and knew way in advance. The client asked when we wanted to come out – I checked the baseball schedule before getting back to them :)

My Major League Stadium List:

Coors, Mile High, Minute Maid/ENRON, Astrodome

I have been to a few minor league parks as well:
Sky Sox Stadium/Security Service, PGE Park (Portland Beavers), Mike Lansing Field (Casper Rockies/Ghosts), TEP (Sidewinders but for Spring Training), Centene Stadium (Great Falls Voyagers).

I need more major league stadiums, but that will come when I graduate and get a decent job.

I want to see AT&T sometime,

I never went to a game at Mile High, SafeCo or Turner Field either. The MLB parks I’ve been to that you didn’t would be the new Comiskey, Comerica, Jacobs Field, Great American, the old Busch, Dodger Stadium and the Big A in Anaheim, and Qualcomm. I still have to get to PETCO, too, it seems to complete the Matt Herges/Steve Finley circuit.

This is fun! Here's my list

Tiger Stadium – ‘87, I was 8 months old so this barely counts, but my dad caught a foul ball off the bat of Detroit’s Matt Nokes (former Rockie!) so that’s something.
Mile High and Coors, of course.
Qualcomm Stadium, back in 98 – got to see Trevor Time in the 9th with Hells Bells blaring, still one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen at a ballpark.
PacBell Park – I think 01, and I saw Andres Galarraga hit a triple in that game. Seriously.
Bank One Ballpark – Back in 03, Spring Break trip with my high school baseball team – saw Schilling pitch and Junior Spivey get a game-winning hit in extras. My least favorite park by far.
Kaufmann Stadium – My favorite non-Coors stadium. Went in 04, John Buck hit a go-ahead homer late and the Royals won. Love this park and want to go back again someday.
Old Busch Stadium – 04 again – Pujols hit an Oliver Perez fastball into the upper deck, but foul. Got to see Larry Walker play one more time.
Dodger Stadium – Summer 05, Dodger Dogs are the best in the world. Really liked this park.
New Busch Stadium – Saw the Rockies there the second game of last season. Best out-of-town scoreboard I’ve seen, and a really nice stadium.
Wrigley Field – Twice in 08, skipping out on class to make the 4 hour drive from Indiana. Any day you can start drinking and eating polish dogs by 10:30 is a good one. If you ever go, do your best to sit in the bleachers, there’s nothing like it in baseball.

AT&T is on my must see list as well...

Here are the stadium’s I have visited:
Arlington- The old ballpark, sat along 1B line after moving up with my dad in the 7th inning.
Mile High- Very scary lightning storm happened while standing on the steel stadium. Howard Johnson laced a double off the CF wall and Ozzie Smith was given a standing-O when he broke the all-time assists record.
Kauffman- Beautiful waterfalls and grass at this stadium.
Coor’s Field- Best baseball stadium in the world, absolute best sightlines for a fan.
Busch Stadium- The old busch, had beautiful statues and the feel of history living inside it.
PetCo Park- Another beautiful stadium, has the best value tickets and kid friendly seats in the sand area, known as “the Beach.”
Angels Stadium- Angels pitchers held Jeter, ARod and the Yankees to 3 hitter in the win.

One thing I try and do at every stadium I visit is to get a baseball with the team logo on it from every stadium I visit. Sometimes they even sell the balls with the fake player autographs on them so I can remember who was at the game. I mount the ball in a clear cube and give it to my Dad.

AT&T

Anyone that ever makes it up to AT&T should let me know. It’d be nice to have a fellow Rockies fan to see a game with. Much better than going by myself or with a Giants fan (though my mom did make it out last year to go to one game with me).

My list of stadiums is very short: Mile High, Coors, and AT&T. I haven’t even been to the Coliseum or whatever the heck it’s being called these days. Do the Rockies play at the A’s this year? Maybe I’ll go to one of those (though I’m not thrilled about taking BART by myself that late.

They play at Oakland June 26-28

I wish we had more Rowbots out there, I’d go with you if I was anywhere close. Maybe you can look up that perp in the Rockies sweatshirt from the Rockpile a few months back. He’d give you some street cred on your way to and from the game, even though he might not bring the brightest conversation during it.

by Rox Girl on Mar 30, 2009 6:10 AM MDT up reply actions

I forgot about that guy.

I remember joking about that at the time. I wonder if he’s in jail or out on bail.

I’ve actually ridden BART pretty late at night home from work before. But that’s far different than after a game. Although maybe there’s safety in numbers.

Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.

by DbacksSkins on Mar 30, 2009 12:10 PM MDT up reply actions

I liked it pretty well.

My focus was more on the aero side than the space side. Space is a bigger focus at CU, so there were fewer professors and courses in my area. Still, I found research and courses that I enjoyed. I ended up leaving with my Masters because I didn’t like my research topic or advisor that much. I think that is really the key: find research you’re interested in with a professor that you like.

Overall, though, it was a good experience. Going in, my requirements for grad school were aerospace engineering close to mountains. You can’t do better than CU for those things. Plus, it landed me a good job (on a space program, ironically).

True story

Last couple of seasons I’ve had to bribe my friends to come to games with me. Since they didn’t want to buy Rockies gear, I told them they could wear their SFA (college in Texas) gear, since it’s all purple. We bought out an entire row and created our own “Purple Row”.

I was stationed there from ‘95-’98, and then when I got out, I moved around the VA burbs for the next several years, until we moved here in 2005. Even within the context of Arlington, I lived in a couple different areas.

When I lived in DC, I was a couple blocks from the National Cathedral. Nice area, but a dead zone for metro stations :(

by DbacksSkins on Mar 26, 2009 10:36 AM MDT up reply actions

Five Guys

They started franchising in 2003, apparently, and have been moving into states one or two at a time. First they went big in NC and Fla, I guess. And one Colorado franchisor is eventually going to have a dozen or so. None in Denver yet.

I’ve never had the pleasure of an In-N-Out, but would really look forward to one. That said, imho, Five Guys is the best fast food burger I’ve ever had. Ever. And I’m an old fart, so I’ve eaten a lot of burgers.

But I still have a soft spot for Whataburger’s double jalapeno cheeseburger from my teen years, when M-M-M-Mel Tillis was doing their ad spots.

Well, the same guy owns all three CO franchisesq

And I would say the quality was equal to DC. Same awesome grilled shrooms and onions, same well-done yet somehow still juicy patties, and even the peanuts.

The fries were soooooo good.

In-N-Out

Closest thing I’ve found to In-N-Out (the undisputed fast food burger champ) in Denver is a chain called Old School Burgers – it’s a straight up rip-off, actually, all the way down to how they cook their fries, but it’s excellent.

Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

How did you come to be a Rockies fan?

by holly96 on Mar 26, 2009 12:17 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm kinda a bandwagon fan...

..so that’s why I mostly lurk here. It’s just that one of the first games I watched just happened to be the 2007 tie-breaker vs the Padres. A friend of mine mentioned how the Rockies were a pretty crappy team, and I was watching out of curiosity.
When the Padres scored 2 in the top of the 13th, I was pretty upset… But you know how that turned out.

I’ve been watching the team ever since. My friend still thinks the Rockies are crappy (damn yankee fan). And boy, liking baseball in Brazil just sucks.

I read some things written in portuguese there

I was really surprised… You can hardly spot a baseball fan here (except for other Latins – I work with some guys from Colombia and Cuba). Imagine finding a brazilian who know what’s a Win Share.

There’s a lot of amateur tems in colleges and where there’s a lot of japanese, but other than that it’s a pretty bleak scene. But Junichi Tazawa came to Sao Paulo last year with his team (it was japanese immigration year).

My grandparents (on my mother’s side) were japanese, by the way.

You just reminded me that

I should have mentioned way up at the top in my first comment that I live literally right across the street from Tulo’s high school.

How did you end up a Rockies fan? Was it before we had CDI, or was that why you became a fan?

by holly96 on Mar 26, 2009 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Purple Row

really played a big part in me becoming a Rox fan. I started following the Rox when CDI first got to Tulsa, never really expecting to become a full fledged Colorado fan, but I wanted to be familiar with the organization. Purple Row became my main source for everything about the Rox and I actually became a fan of the Row before I became a fan of the team.

Now I’m hooked. I’ve been to Baltimore, Boston and Denver to see the Rockies. I’m hoping to see them play Florida in August. I’ve been listening to most every game on the computer for the last couple of years and this year I’ve purchase MLB.com to watch the games.

Not sure how I feel about this SBN stalking.

The FanPost wasn’t trying to prove that Campbell is “better” than Cutler, just point out that when you take the whole picture into account, Cutler isn’t nearly as far above Campbell as some people had been saying — and certainly not enough to justify trading for him. (Especially since the Redskins always get hosed in trades — even the CP for Champ trade, we threw in a 2nd rounder)

Oh, c'mon.

Don’t be so sensitive — I was playin’ about the stalking thing.

I intentionally cherry-picked stats that favored Campbell because I was presenting the other side — the prevailing notion is that Cutler is clearly better, and I was just trying to show how it’s not so clear-cut.

I disagree with some of your points about “stress situations” — or at the very least, I think they’re balanced out by division strength.

DC represent!

Actually, DC Metro Area. Vienna, VA to be exact. Just west of the previously mentioned Falls Church, 4 blocks from my local Five Guys.

Good Five Guys story… Ted (my Rockiescast co-host) and I had spent 4 years at Georgetown University and had just heard about this awesome burger place in Alexandria, VA (there were only 4 or 5 of them at the time). We were intrigued, so we ditched out on our senior convocation (with guest speaker Maria Shriver) to go check it out. One of the best decisions of my entire life! Now there’s a Five Guys 6 blocks from campus. Those little punks don’t know how good they have it.

I've been to Dalhart before...

On a roadtrip to Clarendon, Tx to visit a friends college girlfriend. We were pulled over in Dalhart and the officer thought we were a little loopy, after 10 hours on the road and a case of Mountain Dew we were loopy. In honesty we couldn’t stop giggling over the name of the next town, Dumas. We kept asking the cop to repeat the name because it sounded like Duma** when he said it.

Not a ton of love for the Rockies here in NM. Most baseball fans here seem to favor the D-Backs slightly but the big boys like the Yankees/Red Sox are pretty popular. Now that the Dodgers AAA team has moved back to Albuquerque (the Isotopes) I expect the Dodger blue to show back up. If anyone happens to be in Albuquerque – try to check out a game at Isotopes Park, it is a great place to watch a game. Just wish the Sky Sox made more visits…
As Phoenix and Denver are about the same distance from here – the cable’s Fox Sports bounced between FSRM and FSAZ with coverage the past couple of seasons almost exclusively on the Diamondbacks. I enjoy Mark Grace, but his partner might be the biggest homer in all of play by play. Painful as a Rockies fan to watch. I recently upgraded to DirecTV and was in heaven watching FRSMHD yesterday.

by BillyRay on Mar 29, 2009 10:38 AM MDT up reply actions

Daron Sutton is definitely a homer....

Grace used to be more of a homer, but I think he’s toned that down quite a bit since he’s started doing national games for Fox. The thing I like the most about Sutton is that he has a really good understanding of sabermetrics and statistical analysis — for which he is (you’ll have noticed) mocked incessantly by the old-skool Grace.

I find it genuinely interesting that most New Mexicans seem to favor the Dbacks, despite the fact that the Rockies have been around longer.

taking over Arizona seems unlikely…

HAH!

Whenever I’m at the Dubliner and I see somebody drinking a Miller Lite, I cry a little inside.

Oh — embarrassing beer story of the week: I was under the impression that Smithwick’s was English, not Irish, and was corrected this weekend. :(

by Andrew T. Fisher on Apr 1, 2009 12:08 AM MDT up reply actions

We're leaving tomorrow...

and I am so sad to go. The trip was wonderful…we wound up staying in phoenix and only going to road games (a’s, whitesox, and royals), but still just amazing! I still love HC, but it was cool to go to the other stadiums since previously we had only seen TEP. We geeked over seeing Matty again and I was able to snag a Rox tank top at the A’s park. I think the Royals park in Surprise was my favorite of the 3….had the old-time ballpark feel to it, people were very friendly working there, and the music was the best. I also did wind up having encounters with Iannetta, Spilly, Tulo, and Atkins among others so everyone that commented on my facebook will be pleased. Iannetta is a very polite boy along with being a special boy. Tulo was extremely happy and giddy. Spilly was Spilly and Atty was well…you all know he is my favorite. I have also fallen in sports love with Dexter Fowler and he was quite charming to talk to.

So, sorry to have written a novel, but the trip was great and I look forward to hearing more about yours too Andrew!

Craig, CO

I’ve been a lurker here for several years, just haven’t had much to comment about, but, Western Slope CO has been poorly represented here (except for a few formerly froms).

If you’re having trouble finding where to stick my pin, that would be just down the road from the hometown of RoxGirl.

I was raised in the Dakota’s. I First attended a Ball Game at Metropolitan Stadium in 1966, the year after the Twins were beaten by the Dodgers in the World Series (could this be why I hate the Dodger).

I also attended a game in the mid 70’s. Rod Carew didn’t play that day, but he juggled baseballs on the dugout step the whole game.

Also attended games at Kauffman Stadium, Mile High (Home opener 1993), Coors Field, and Jack Murphy Stadium (1995).

Thank You holly96 for starting this post, and Thank You to all you great folks at Purple Row. You’re the Greatest!!!

Good topic

I live in St. Petersburg, FL. which is where the Rays play. A LOT of people think that the Rays play in Tampa however Tampa is about 30 minutes from Tropicana Field . Which brings me to what I do for a living. Day time I work for the local P.D. and in the evenings, I am on the Rays grounds crew. Something that I’ve been very proud of being a huge baseball fan for over 40 years. I am part owner of 5 thoroughbred race horses (that’s where my Rays $$$ goes : ) ).
Last year was a dream year for me. I saw my first horse win in May and then I get to go to the World Series in October. (She won again on April 2 of this year too however I have a STRONG feeling that I’m not gettin’ back to the World Series this year). St.Pete gets pretty warm during the spring and summer months and it’s ALWAYS humid. It is so difficult to find and buy any Rox gear here in Florida. Very frustrating.
