Spring Training Game #27: James McDonald vs Jorge De La Rosa
vs.
Today's Dodgers lineup is another log to add to the leave Tucson bonfire, as the only regular scheduled to appear is Matt Kemp. Patrick Saunders has posted both lineups in full:
Dodgers
- RF Xavier Paul
- C Brad Asmus
- 1B James Loney
- CF Matt Kemp
- 3B Blake DeWitt
- LF Jason Repko
- SS Chin-lung Hu
- 2B Juan Castro
- RHP James McDonald
Rockies
- CF Dexter Fowler
- LF Seth Smith
- 1B Todd Helton
- 2B Jeff Baker
- 3B Ian Stewart
- SS Troy Tulowitzki
- C Chris Iannetta
- RF Scott Podsednik
- LHP Jorge De La Rosa
Two things we'd like to see today, Jorge De La Rosa answering more questions about his readiness, and our bats raising more questions about McDonald and the Dodgers current disarray in their fifth starter battle. Go Rockies!
There will also be an audio feed via MLB, but no video for this game.

for school closed. This is different, especially since I had only 5 of these days from K-12. And yes I grew up in Colorado.

I had a similar amount and also grew up in Colorado.
The only times it seems to happen is when it snows heavily out of season.
Eschew Obfuscation!
We never got snow.
I lived in a valley just south of Colorado Springs so the north side would get a lot and places south of us would, but we never did. The snow days we got were:
October 1997
March 1998
March or April 2003
I am sure I got a couple more but these are the only ones I remember.

Four of mine came in the great snowstorm of March 2003
It happened right after Spring Break had ended, so they weren’t really prepared to deal with the snow.
Eschew Obfuscation!
I had a LOT more than that
But here, they closed school for one or two inches of snow. Heh. Or earlier this year Nashville’s public schools were closed for cold.

Lineups
It is getting frustrating to never see our starting lineup opposing another teams, we either don’t take our regulars to Phoenix or they don’t bring theirs to Tuscon. Yesterday we had more opening days starters playing in the minors then on the ST team

What has happened to Cargo?
He hasn’t played much lately. Is this because they are seeing if Pods is going to make the team and Gonzalez is destined to CS (I hope he is) or because he is injured and the press is not hearing about it?
"A great catch is like watching girls go by; the last one you see is always the prettiest." ~Bob Gibson

Seems like
It is a product of being in Tucson, the guys that are locked in to a roster spot (starters) don’t want to deal with the 2+ hour bus rides between Tucson and Phoenix and feel like they can get their work in during local minor league games. Whether it is as effective for them or the rest of the team, who knows. I think that they’ll put a better product on the field for fans that make it to spring training by being in Phoenix, closer to the other teams.

Atkins and Hawpe are injured remember
but yeah I agree a little bit that it would be nice to see a proper major league matchup at some point, oh well, only a week and a half….
For those of you with ESPN Insider access...
Here’s a BP Article forecasting that speed will be the next big thing. It projects the Rockies as being 27th in the league in power/speed balance.
Good read.

Just Curious
How much our ranking would change with Dexter and EY JR in the lineup
by Chacinisthefuture on Mar 26, 2009 1:53 PM MDT up reply actions
They don't really go into methodology, but I'd assume that
they used the PECOTA projections (which are consistently pessimistic for the Rockies btw) of our presumed lineup.
Take out Spilborghs/Smith and Barmes and I don’t really see that being an incredible shift, but a step in the right direction from a speed perspective.
Eschew Obfuscation!
It's probably going to wind up being a bigger shift than they give us credit for.
And it’s not because of the speed, either. I think the Rockies power is getting underestimated by a lot of projections this season.
On that note
Fangraphs’ fantasy arm, Rotographs, had good previews yesterday on Seth Smith and Ryan Spilborghs . I assume that those are two of the guys that you feel that projections are missing on in terms of power. I suppose I can see Helton, Tulo and Iannetta outperforming their projections on that front as well.
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
Those would be the big ones I was thinking about.
It just seems the projections are generally pessimistic given that most of our players put up better ISO’s last season in what was a down year.
Rockies as being 27th in the league in power/speed balance.
Quite, frankly, I’m shocked we’re not 30th

Here you go:
Paulino: Hard-throwing starting RHP with arm troubles (sat out last year)
Gervacio: RH power arm reliever, struggles getting lefties out.
That’s pretty much the best the Astros can offer in their system.

No... neither team does.
The Rockies focus is pretty specific, pitchers with minor league options remaining that could start the season in Colorado Springs. As long as we’re not dead set on getting a starter, Houston could fill this.
The Nationals?
Maybe they will take Torrealba off our hands and we’ll get one of their excess outfielders.

Just an unlucky game all around for the Rockies thus far.
Listening to it, it really sounds like they’ve outperformed the Dodgers, but the breaks have gone LA’s way. Let’s hope this is the opposite of what happens during the regular season.
Why do yoy say that?
Have there been some hard hit balls at people?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Although the lack of contact in key situations is really what's killing us.
All these clutch K’s their young pitchers are coming up with better just be a Spring thing, or the rest of the division’s in a lot of trouble.
I know
and of all the teams, I just can’t stand the Dodgers. They are relying on some very young starters w/ very little history, so I’m hoping that will catch up w/ them very soon.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Well, Rox have had some people on and not done anything with them.

Whoa
I didn’t predict that exactly. I said I wouldn’t be as shocked as everyone as I do suspect he has more in him than most people do. If I were to do an honest prediction, I’d say 20-22, more if he was actually a healthy start all year. 14 by the end of July.

I saw demon cats once.
I left home at about 6am and there three of them sitting in the middle of the street, spaced randomly about 10 feet apart, and they refused to move so I had to carefully drive around them. When I came back an hour later, they were all still sitting there, except had shifted spots slightly. I was creeped out the rest of the day.
You can post the picture from your hard drive to an external site

It wasn't as bad as it looks...
Certainly not as bad as Marquis’ start yesterday. JDLR ran into a lot of trouble in the third but otherwise dominated.
JDLR had one bad inning
with 5 hits, 5 runs and one walk. Only two balls were hit hard all inning apparently. He didn’t pitch too bad. Fogg on the other hand didn’t fare as well.

Last year
a Rockies pitcher, Francis I believe, was ejected for doing just that in a ST game. He ended up serving a suspension in the regular season. There is no need to retaliate in the spring. Let the real things start and then re-open the feuds.

If you click on the link that goes with that,
Ramirez and the rest of the Dodgers regulars will take a break on Thursday when L.A. travels to Tucson to face the Rockies. Outfielder Matt Kemp should return to the lineup after missing two games with contact lens issues, and fifth starter candidate James McDonald will take the hill looking to follow up three hitless innings on Saturday against the Indians.
It only mentions Kemp as an exception to the “rest of the Dodgers regulars” so I assumed that it meant Loney as well. To further show how lazy I was, I actually didn’t really read the article but got that from TBLA’s game thread today.
Shame on you
for assuming TBLA would be accurate on their own team ;o)
