Saturday Rockpile: Joe Koshansky placed on waivers

The Denver Post reports that the Colorado Rockies have placed Joe Koshansky on waivers in order to open up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Any team out there looking for a big, powerful first baseman who needs playing time in order to prove his worth? WIth the plethora of options the Rockies have at first base, as we've known for years by now, Joe Koshansky doesn't have a clear path to prolonged playing time with the Rockies. JoKo has been with the organization longer than Ryan Shealy, who, as a first baseman, had no real shot at sticking with the Rockies. And if I recall correctly, Shealy also tried playing the outfield in 2006. He later was traded to the Kansas City Royals for Jeremy Affeldt. What a cruel fate it is to be a first baseman with the Rockies.

That first link also discusses Manny Corpas's much improved outing yesterday against the Mariners.

Thomas Harding goes into a bit more detail on Aaron Cook's performance against the Mariners.

The Rockies play the Cubs today, with Ryan Dempster of the Chicago Cubs opposing Ubaldo Jimenez.

Indeed he did.

What a cruel fate it is to be a first baseman with the Rockies.

At least Hawpe was able to learn RF.

It’s a shame he didn’t showcase himself more in his MLB stints the past two years so that we could get something in a trade…Any idea how long the clock is before he clears?

Ten days

It will be interesting to see if anybody picks him up, as most every other team has to make similar roster decisions right now.

And Atkins 3B

I find it annoyingly funny that two in our starting line up are playing positions “unnatural” to them and they are both blocking some good young prospects. Hawpe isn’t blocking CarGo and Dex as much since they definitely need more time but you could make the argument that he is.

If we didn't trade Holliday it would have been the same with him too

Baker, Hawpe, Atkins, Stewart and Barmes could all be principally playing different positions than when they were drafted.

Speaking of the Cubs!!

I’m going to the Cubs/Yankees game next Saturday…my favorite player in the entire MLB, Rich Harden, will be pitching and it will be the first time I have seen him pitch live. I’m so excited!!!

I missed that one, thanks for pointing it out. I hope that he gets a legit chance to play somewhere.

Yea

I feel like I read most of the stuff over there, or at least have been lately.
Tough game to watch yesterday. I actually hope Miami wins tonight, i’d be ok with them or Notre Dame winning it all.

I hope we say Goodbye to Joe

Cuz, that is what would be best for Joe. I hope he is picked up by a team, that he can start on now, make an impact, and position himself for a long career in the Bigs. Good luck Joe.

Rosenthal

Thinks Helton could be in line for comeback player of the year.

Some notes

about Morillo, Stewart and Dex in there as well. The Rockies are one of the teams where I think the beat writers probably know quite a bit more about whats going on than KRos.

I think I've been saying this

since the surgery. If not then at least since an article came out that had Hawpe saying Helton was doing things in the weight room the other players wished they could.

Obivously Joe couldn't be made part of any trade packages???

Hate to lose him for nothing but what are you gonna do.

I’ll be really bummed if someone like the Giants picks him up, God knows they are a little starved for power.

It seems they are content with Ishikawa to start the season to me.

but I wouldn’t rule it out

There goes the dream of

a double play trio of Quintanilla to Tulowitzki to Koshansky

Dex knows.....

It's possible that happened last year....

I’ll have to check

Questions

One, who are we making room for on the 40-man? Podsednik?

Two… if we need a spot on the 40-man, why not just put Francis on the 60-day DL?

by Tom (RFTN) on Mar 28, 2009 1:57 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Good idea with Francis

especially since it is given he’s gone for the season. As for the 40-man, I don’t have a clue.

The article says we need a spot for Rusch.

And also maybe a spot for either Belisle or Fogg.

by pedalpusher on Mar 28, 2009 4:45 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It sounds like

we’ll need more than one 40 man roster slot when we make the final roster, meaning that Rusch and one of Fogg/Belisle will make the final cut.

Eschew Obfuscation!
