Interesting
to see Stewart playing 2B and Bake playing 3B
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
I assume it is because they want to get Stewart time at 2B, plus if Baker is traded, it will most likely be for 3B purposes.

Or since both
are the utility players they want the both playing different positions. The Bake at third would be good for trade purposes.

They have to get them both innings. I’d rather Morales come into a game in relief than I would have him sit around longer than normal.

True
I don’t want them sitting around either and since this is a non-divisional game having both pitch is a good idea. I just wonder why one doesn’t start in a minor league game.

There's a fan post
here that discusses the FO’s inability to gauge the market for their own players. I think this has kind of been a major downfall over the past couple of years. More on Koshansky:

Eschew Obfuscation!
Question
How can the Rangers send him to AAA but the Rockies couldn’t without exposing him to waivers?
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
The Rockies were trying to take Koshansky off of their 40 man roster to free up a roster spot for Rusch/whoever
while the Rangers put him on their 40 man roster and thus could utilize JoKo’s minor league options (he had one or two remaining).
Eschew Obfuscation!
I agree LAME
"A great catch is like watching girls go by; the last one you see is always the prettiest." ~Bob Gibson

When you remove someone from the 40 man roster, they must clear waivers
to make it to the minor leagues. The Rockies were trying to pull a fast one but it didn’t work this time.
Eschew Obfuscation!
When a player is placed on waivers and is claimed
You can pull him back. They could have easily just yanked JoKo back. I don’t think they were trying to pull a fast one.

It is baffling.
We had a free spot on the roster already with Francis. We only have one confirmed NRI making the team. Puzzling.
I don’t know how they couple have imagined that they could sneak the minor league RBI leader through the cracks.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 29, 2009 3:19 PM MDT up reply actions
Well, a team would have to have a 40 man roster spot open to pick him up
plus the transfer fee, so not too many teams would make that move.
I’m actually not sure why Texas would make that move as they have Davis with Smoak waiting in the wings.
Also, I think there will be two NRI pitchers that make the team (Fogg or Belisle in addition to Rusch).
Eschew Obfuscation!
Aside from one recent Renck article...
… the general consensus has been that the Rockies are going with a 6 man bench rather than an 8 man bullpen
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 29, 2009 3:23 PM MDT up reply actions
That would be nice...
but it won’t happen. Hurdle will carry four starters, so they’ll need an extra bullpen slot or two.

Not three days ago
Ringolsby and Etkin were quite certain the extra spot was going to a position player.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 29, 2009 3:27 PM MDT up reply actions
I see the roster shaping up like this...
not how I would do it, but this is my best guess for how O’Dowd sees it for Opening Day, barring trades:
SP: Cook, Jimenez, Marquis, De La Rosa
RP: Corpas, Street, Embree, Grilli, Speier, Morillo, Rusch, Fogg/Belisle
IF: Iannetta, Torrealba, Helton, Barmes, Baker, Quintanilla, Tulowitzki, Atkins, Stewart
OF: Spilborghs, Smith, Hawpe, Murton
Would I do it differently? Absolutely. The extra RP would become Morales, Q would become Podsednik (the second NRI).
Eschew Obfuscation!
It's possible
that Pods is the other NRI and Q doesn’t make it. Morales will not be on the roster as a RP because he needs to get work as a starter, and since AAA starts the same week as the Rockies this is possible.
"A great catch is like watching girls go by; the last one you see is always the prettiest." ~Bob Gibson

Assuming you are correct about the 8 man bullpen, then that is indeed the roster.
But I’m still not sold that they’re going that direction.

Assuming they go in extra bench player direction
Pods is in as 5th outfielder, not extra RP.

I agree based upon...

2. Tools provided
3. Depth
But not entirely certain based on performance.
by Greg Stanwood on Mar 29, 2009 3:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Quoting myself:
This final set of waivers is perhaps the most difficult for fans to understand. However, the purpose is clear. Revocable major league waivers are utilized in August as a means to gauge trade interest in certain players. After all, in MLB between August 1 and the end of the season, a player may not be traded without first clearing major league waivers—making these waivers (August 1-August 31) the only way for a team to fill a late season hole in their roster.

It's a good point to keep in mind...
That the Rockies continue to have a lot of players picked up by other teams precisely because they know we have to make these tough decisions, moreso than most others. In the last twelve months we’ve had at least four get claimed off waivers in Koshansky, Strop, Newman and Arias and I believe I’m forgetting somebody as well as two Rule 5 picks that are looking like solid bets to make it into the regular season on the 25 man rosters of the teams that have them. It’s a testament that the scouting and development people continue to do things right.
The questions should be whether O’Dowd’s allowed these sacrifices to happen in order to keep the right players. Rusch and whoever aren’t the only players that need to be monitored to evaluate this, but also other forty man players that the franchise has chosen to protect over Koshansky and company such as Chris Nelson, Samuel Deduno and Shane Lindsay.
Ahh -
thanks – that makes sense. I really am curious to see who gets added. I think Rusch is a shoo-in for a BP spot, but I don’t see Sal or Pods making the team. I don’t want to see Belisle or Fogg on the MLB roster – the only option I see there is that they have some trades in the works?

It seems
that there has been a lot of overreacting lately. Yes, Jimenez and Marquis have struggled in their most recent outings, but this is still spring training. This is the time that they’re supposed to work thru problems as they get ready for the season. Morales has had a good outing today. Smith has had a poor one. Let’s not read to much into it—either the good or the bad.

Good start for Morales
Should someone else have come in to finish this one off and help ensure Morales finishes on a solid note? I say no, he was only at 50-55 pitches and we should have been able to get 1 more inning out of him, but in all fairness the 9th inning is a different animal even in ST. I think unfortunately it ended badly, but having him out there for the 9th inning was the right thing to do.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

In ST, getting the pitcher’s work in is more important than winning. In a real game, with a one run difference, Manny Corpas would be pitching.
