Buh-bye
By keeping Fowler, the Rockies let go of veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik, the team’s fastest player and best base-stealer. Podsednik can opt out of his contract if not on the 25-man roster by Friday.
Outfielder Scott Podsednik said today that he hasn’t ruled out going to Triple-A Colorado Springs, but will first attempt to land a big-league job elsewhere.

Really
curious how this is going to fall out – I don’t think it hurts anything to see what Spilly/Smith have in CF/LF – although it’s hard to argue against the contribution that the team will get out of Fowler’s D if he does start alot.

Although this might cost the Rockies a year down the road,
I’m happy, Dex is a joy to watch. They just better give him at bats until he takes over the starting job (this year or next) . . . I don’t want it to be a waste of his time/abilities.
The Roster is pretty much set
that article said the Rockies would have 12 pitchers, 5 starters, and 7 relievers (normal season split) and the normal 13 position players
Iannetta
Torrealba
Helton
Barmes
Tulowitzki
Atkins
Baker
Stewart
Quintanilla
Hawpe
Fowler
Spillborghs
S. Smith
Cook
Jimenez
Morales
Marquis
De La Rosa
Corpas
Street
Grilli
Embree
Only question would be the 3 last bullpen jobs from 4 players, and of this list Belise would be the long shot
Rusch
Morillo
Speier
Belise
15- day DL: Bucholtz
60-day DL: Francis (out for season)

Also
in Etkin’s piece about Morales was a note that :C was reassigned to Minor League Camp – which I think everyone will be happy about.

Interesting
I really want to see what Fowler can do, but if he isn’t starting nearly everyday I think this is a bit of a waste for his development.
If he does start regularly in CF and Spilly moves to LF, I’ll be happy, though I wanted to see what Seth Smith could do with regular playing time as well.
Yay
Between this news and the news that Poor Widdle Baby Jay Cutler will be traded, thus completing his torpedo job on the Denver Broncos franchise… well, it’s like Ice Cube said, I gotta say it was a good day.

Singletary's a crappy coach, too.
For what that’s worth. He wouldn’t put up with Cutler’s garbage, though, I can tell you that. “Can’t win with them. Can’t play with them. Can’t do it. I want winners.”

I hesitate to reply
because this is a Rockies blog and because the Cutler/McDaniels saga has been beaten to death.
…but you’re right. Singletary wouldn’t put up with Cutler’s garbage. But the difference is that Singletary commands and has earned respect. Singletary would whip Jay Cutler into shape, would change Jay’s attitude for him. He might be a crappy coach, but that remains to be seen.

So wait
we’re gonna have Fowler not get regular at-bats as well as not delay his arbitration eligibility? Not sure if I’m on board for this…
I'm not sure I get it....
seems like the worst of both worlds. It’s like Wily Mo Peña with the Reds.
In terms of talent, Dex definitely should probably be with the big club. But in terms of practical matters, he should be in Colorado Springs…. why waste an entire year when he’s so far down on the depth chart as it is?

If you are right, I'm sort of having mixed feelings.
Mostly because of Smith. I think he’s earned more than a spot as a back up. And I think he could really excel as a starter, or at least in a platoon role.
I suppose having too many good players is a good spot to be in, but it makes for some tough choices.
As long as he gets regular at bats
I don’t really care. But if they’re bringing him along to be part of dumb platoon situations and pinch run I don’t like it. I still think it’s a little curious but he’s a hell of a talent and hopefully adjusts well – just envision him and Spilborghs setting the table – sick
I think baker is still technically on the market, but no one's biting.

Makes me wonder
If they received an offer for Hawpe they couldn’t refuse.
Either way, they have 4 outfielders who need to start. I wish we had a DH right now.
Hawpe
Seems like most of the AL teams are pretty set at DH – can’t think of a reason anyone else would want him…
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."

Me either.
Maybe the team feels like they want to win? And they feel it won’t hurt Fowler too much. It is definitely a win now move.
Off topic
a bit, but how is the rotation going to stack up? Whoever is pitching game 3 against the D-Bags should be going on Friday, and I thought that was JDLR, but that isn’t possible. Is JDLR just going to have a long layoff or is there thought to Morales starting that game?

By the way.
I think these moves (unless the teams love of Colonel continues) means that baker is not moving.
And does someone have a list
Of who is still on the Spring roster. I’m sure they are very close to trimming it down to 25.
I think this is accurate....only 26 men left standing
Cook, Jimenez, Morales, de la Rosa, Marquis.
Corpas, Street, Embree, Speier, Grilli, Rusch, Morillo, Belisle.
Fowler, Smith, Spilborghs, Hawpe.
Iannetta, Torrealba
Helton, Tulo, Barmes, Baker, Atkins, Stewart, Quintanilla.
So all that’s left is Morillo vs Belisle, will Morillo the favorite due to options.

Dex needs to start, there we all agree. If he does start can he be like Tulo and make a run at ROY?

You want to sit Smith?
It’s hard for me to conjecture that he’s ROY worthy when he is jumping from AA and was completely overmatched not four weeks ago. It’s certainly possible, but since defense isn’t involved in ROY voting and he doesn’t have power, I just don’t know. This will be his one chance though.

How accurate are Bill James projections??
It has Fowler with this line for full season 2009:
171 Hits. 38 2Bs. 8 3Bs. 10 HR. 28 SB. .303 AVG. .374 OBP. .826 OPS.

150 games in 2009.
Dex knows.....
by The Lodo Magic Man on Mar 31, 2009 10:11 PM MDT up reply actions
I think
He is way under in terms of SB. He doesn’t have quite the same speed that willy had, but he will have a significantly higher amount of opportunities to steal. I would say, 150 game season, leading off, he wouldn’t get less than 35 steals. The other numbers look good, although his average may be a few ticks too high.
Bill James tends to be on the optimistic side from what I've seen
CHONE and Oliver have been more accurate if you look at this morning’s Rockpile. And the average of those have Fowler hitting about .271 with 7 HR, .346 OBP, .398 SLG, .743 OPS and .331 wOBA (slightly under MLB average and much lower than Seth Smith’s projection)

Oliver does not
CHONE has 20 for 447 ABs, ZiPS 18 for 397

by Andrew T. Fisher on Mar 31, 2009 11:04 PM MDT up reply actions
In the minors
he averaged a SB for every 12.78 ABs.
CHONE projects him for one per 22.35, ZiPS at one per 22.06, and Bill James at 21.1.
There are two reasons for this. His OBP this year will likely not be the .394 he put up in the minors (less opportunities to steal), and MLB pitchers/catchers would be harder to steal on. He’ll hone his timing and craft with more time.
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Mar 31, 2009 11:17 PM MDT up reply actions
He also had a 68% success rate in the minors
which is okay but not great. Seth Smith stole at 77% in the minors, but he also generated one per 56 ABs only. Fowler has the theft potential though I think. Heck, if Holliday can pull a 93% success rate….

Another thought
Maybe they plan to use Smith as a backup in the outfield most days, move Spilly to left, and let Fowler play center.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a lineup of
Fowler
Spilly
Helton
Atkins
Hawpe
CDI
Tulo
Barmes
Being that Fowler has officially made the team, I am all for that
Let Fowler have the starting role, and have Smith continue the PH role he’s had at the MLB level and done well with previously.

Sort of Like Baker
If he’s blocked and done a decent job coming off the bench let him keep doing it.
"A great catch is like watching girls go by; the last one you see is always the prettiest." ~Bob Gibson

Yeah
Nothing whatsoever against Smith. I just think he’ll be less harmed from getting limited playing time than Fowler will.
I hope Hurdle at least finds a way for Fowler to start two or three times a week, provided he’s up for the challenge of course. If not, he should go back to the Springs so we can give Murton a try.

It's too early to tell.
It all depends on how Hurdle runs the outfield. If Smith is demoted to backup and Spilly is moved to LF, as I believe it will happen, than it won’t effect him too much.
Spilborghs still gets the nod over Seth Smith
as he can slide over to left field when Dexter starts in center. This is also notable for lineups vs LHP, as Spilborghs will also stay in the lineup to keep the RH bat. I don’t think Dex’ addition will affect Hawpe’s at-bats at all and Spilborghs only very slightly, if at all. Seth Smith is the casualty if Dex becomes a starter down the line, provided no trades

by Andrew T. Fisher on Mar 31, 2009 11:02 PM MDT up reply actions
Maybe
Unless Smith proves to be the .800+ OPS bat that he’s been throughout his minor league career. Then folks we have a nice little problem on our hands.
Ya I guess so
but an .800+ OPS Bat is a terrible thing to waste…. see Willy T. getting starts over Spilly.
Then we trade a bat for an arm?
(Not literally)
or Fowler goes back to AAA if he’s struggling. Or we have a 3 player 2 position platoon. Where each player gets 4-5 starts a week.

by Andrew T. Fisher on Mar 31, 2009 11:23 PM MDT up reply actions
But you assume.
That Fowler will be batting Willy T style. If both have an OPS close to .800, than the choice is obvious.
True
However, people I think are still underrating Smith. I see him easily being a guy who hits 20 homeruns with a .300 Average. Anyways this is a better discussion to be having rather then the merits of Steve Finley making the team.
Will it be a
Reth Smilborghs platoon in LF? Or will it be more of a Rexter Spowler platoon in CF?

I vote for the 1st one.
By the way, my bet is the first pitch will be Webb vs Fowler. That is going to be exciting.
Maybe he'll get some help from Brad Hawpe

Hawpe
was slightly less of a Webbkiller last year:
2008 – 3-9, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 3 BBs, 4 Ks, 1.056 OPS
2007 – 9-15, 2 2Bs, 3 HRs, 11 RBIs, 2 BBs, 2Ks, 1.965 OPS
Career Overall – 16-47, 2 2Bs, 2 3Bs, 4 HRs, 13 RBIs, 8 BBs, 14 Ks, 1.162 OPS
Still, out of all batters who have more than 20 ABs against Webb, Hawpe’s OPS is 4th. The other three are JT Snow (10-25, 1.420), Moises Alou (11-23, 1.321), and Austin Kearns (9-21, 1.167). Jimmy Rollins (12-27, 1.146) is close behind.
OTOH, Hawpe has more career HRs off Webb than any other batter.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
My prudence wonders if this is a good idea
We have several guys we can rely on for solid and productive hitting, and I think we all agreed that if Fowler went to CS we would have a good and comprehensive offensive line-up.
I was personally really looking forward to seeing what Smirton would do, having been really impressed with Matt so far and being a fan of Seth. Instead we have a genuinely exciting but fragile and young player who could end up being sent down in three weeks having hit .180, been caught stealing a dozen times and with his confidence shot to pieces. Even in a best case scenario it’s hard to imagine Dex having better numbers than Smirton would have produced, in which case why not keep him in AAA until the dates work regarding future free agency?
I feel almost embarrassed to be so reactionary, but what the Rox need this season is a strong start and consistency. I hope Dex wins games for us when he does start but right now I feel justified in being a Cassandra.
