Spring Training Game #8: Jorge De La Rosa vs. Mexico
JDLR tries to keep his countrymen, led by that turncoat Vinny Castilla, from regaining lost territory:
It's imperative that Albuquerque and Alamosa remain under Rockies control, Jorge, do not lose this battle.
Here's the Gameday link, for those that want to follow along with all the drama of half inning updates.

So historically speaking...
Vinny Castilla is playing the role of Pancho Villa here? And, by default, Clint Hurdle is General John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing. Interesting…
Russ might be pleased

if JoKo continues to have a monster spring
what do we do with him….we are wasting his Prime years (he is 26 now and Helton still has another 3 yrs left on his contract)…i wish we would just cut Helton especially if he continued to decline and trade Atkins and have Stewie and JoKo on the corners….that would be nice for the near future
Jiri Hudler...our underrated MVP
I agree with the big point, but disagree with the particulars...
It’s unlikely that Koshansky is more valuable than Helton right now, It’s debatable whether he will be as valuable over the remainder of Helton’s contract, so you’d end up paying Helton’s contract anyway without the guarantee of getting that level of production. We’d get more HR’s but lose a lot of OBP, so it all washes out and your scenario doesn’t really help the team any. I think Koshansky needs to get traded, that way the Rockies can at least attempt to get some added value at another position rather than just meeting the status quo at first.
Can't argue with that
That’s what i was also thinking maybe we trade him n get something good in return. If JoKo continues to improve though (plate discipline especially) then he is definitely looking like Adam Dunn 2.0.

Personally
we would expect nothing…in fact we would have to play at least 1/2 of Helton’s salary.
I’m not sure that is such a bad deal. I’m really down on Helton, and he seems to be clogging things up. Wither it be Hawpe moving to make room for CarGo, or Atkins moving to 1st to make room for Stewart. Personally I think removing Helton, and adding Stewart or CarGo to the line up, improves our hitting….defense? well no so much

Redhawk, you right on the mark but I think
it’s highly unlikely because (1) you would have a hard time finding a trade partner for Todd with the recent back history even at half price and (2) Todd probably wouldn’t agree to it anyway. Todd is the poster boy for how a long-term contract can hamstring a team.
This game should be on TV...

and then jump directly to the MLB? If he does, will he work out of the ’pen?
http://twitter.com/blakebomber
I think he will have some time in AAA,
But it will be like Jimenez in that it won’t be that long this season. I think he could stick from that point on, but we’ll see.
You're really going for this
If we’re in it, he’s in the pen (unless he’s just destructively good in AA)
If we’re out of it, do you let him keep going in AA/AAA till season’s end?

So I wonder what Woody Paige's next column is going to be like,
Now that Thorny’s ERA is 20.25… my guess is that he just ignores it entirely and says that Spring Training stats for pitchers are meaningless. I mean, what other choices could there be?

It will be interesting to see what the team looks like when it's put back together...
As well as it can be put back together with all the injuries and what not.
am i the only one
that is irked that we’re already talking about injuries? i guess Francis’ injury was a big deal the whole offseason, but aside from that it seems like there are way too many injuries for just being at the start of spring training. am i blowing things up too much? or should the Rockies up and fire the strength and conditioning coach?
Aut Vincam Aut Periam
I've been thinking that, too
I thought he should have been fired with the rest of the coaches this offseason… there were a lot of injuries last year

Hawpe's was a fluke,
Stewart and Baker might be evidence for you, I’m not sure if any pitcher is ever that reliable to not get injured so I don’t really count Buchholz’ yet, either, and Atkins I just don’t know about.
Oh JDLR...
He must not have located his meatballs very well today.

That cost us at least one run,
Who knows how many more. I know Hurdle’s wanting the team to be aggressive, but he’s got to realize he’s robbing our hitters of PA’s by running into easy outs like that.
It's okay, I have them too sometimes,
Take a deep breath and repeat the “It doesn’t count in Spring Training” mantra.
why is hurdle sending catchers
Remember how many times he’s sent Yorvy?

Well it keeps coming down to Johnny Herrera it seems
Like every inning ended like that. He needs to not make the team.

That's odd to single Herrera out like that...
Did he kick your cat once? Our boy Dexter Fowler’s not doing much better, he needs to not make the team also, I’m afraid.
Well it was just this game
he seemed to keep coming up in key situations and then fell flat on his face.
