PrintThe Rockies have won their last two in Cactus League action and look to make it a bonafide winning streak today as they face the San Diego Padres today at 2:10 MDT (yes, if you forgot to spring forward here's a final reminder) at Hi Corbett Field.
After Franklin Morales put up an excellent outing yesterday, it will be up to Greg Reynolds to match it if he wants to keep up in the fifth starter battle, as Greg Smith has been scratched from the start with flu-like symptoms. With pitching restrictions seemingly being lifted somewhat, this is our chance to see what Reynolds can do. Likewise, the lineup today will ostensibly feature Todd Helton in his first spring action, along with Garrett Atkins. In other words, it should be a legitimate lineup put forth by the Rockies today! I'll be listening on radio, so I'll be ahead of Gameday with my updates.

Oh I doubt he's going to break camp a Rockie,
But I think he’s got a good chance of becoming a permanent fixture in 2010 when Marquis and JDLR will likely need replaced.
In terms of future years...
… I tend not to look that far ahead. I feel it’s impossible to place an accurate prediction, any number of things could happen to help or hurt Reynolds’ long term chances. But sure, I hope for his success in that department as well.

That's why I say a good chance...
That’s hardly a prediction. And while it may be impossible to be 100% accurate, there will be more and less likely outcomes. I think Reynolds making the rotation one season from now is more likely than retaining Marquis or JDLR or better than Jason Hirsh. I think Franklin Morales is a bit more likely to be a part of the rotation than Reynolds and Chacin will present a serious challenge for that last job also. I really think those three will be who we’re looking at.
Don't get me wrong
I wasn’t trying to imply it is useless to theorize about the future, simply that I don’t. Assuming Marquis will put up similar numbers to how he always does, he probably won’t be more than a placeholder. If DLR starts performing better, however, he may stick. Same goes if Hirsh, Smith and other youngsters end up working out quicker than Reynolds does.

You're right about JDLR possibly being retained,
And I think he’s the big wildcard in this. I think Reynolds’ repertoire gives him an advantage over Hirsh, and probably Smith, who the Rockies seem to be grooming for a swing relief role down the road anyway, this is why I see him as more likely than either of those two. The other pitchers on the farm outside Chacin don’t have enough yet to present a serious threat, Friedrich and Graham still seem too far away but they’d be next in line. I think the bigger threat to Reynolds will be his shoulder, but as long as it holds up, he’ll be one of the top contenders for a rotation job next season.
