Spring Training Game #33: Aaron Cook vs. Gil Meche
Aaron Cook makes his last start in the Cactus League before the start of the regular season. Having surrendered three runs on 10 hits in his outing on Friday, Cook worked on his secondary pitches that day and probably will do more of the same today.
Gil Meche will oppose Cook today. He shutout the Dodgers for seven innings in his last time on the mound. Seems like it's time for Meche to be roughed up a bit.

Hi my name is Chacinisthefuture and I'm addicted to Rockies baseball
I somehow survived a quiet offseason but now that regular season is fast approaching I’m hooked on them again and can’t get enough, evidenced by me once again being the first to post on a game thread, a full hour before the game starts.

Hi Chacinisthefuture
And we’re here to help.
Actually, we’re really not. We tend to make people’s addictions worse.
I've noticed,
And yesterday’s game being on internet TV really didn’t help, I accomplished absolutely nothing yesterday afternoon.

Here here....
That is what they did to me, I didn’t think it was possible but people on this site are fanatics and their excitement about Rockies baseball is contagious. If you need to know who pinch hit in the 8th inning for the Rockies in the 4th road game of the 1997 season, this group could probably figure it out for you.
What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????
Trick question.
The Rockies didn’t have a pinch hitter that inning.

4 Minutes...
That is how long it tool Russ to respond. If you consider that fact that he many not have even seen my post for 2 or 3 minutes, it is very possible that he did not even have tim to look it up. That means he would have to just know it. I am a huge Rockies fan and my wife even works at Coors field, but I don’t have enough room in my brain to maintain that kind of detail.

My point is
There is more baseball knowledge (let alone Rockies knowledge) on this site than the three other sites I have blogged on combined.
What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????
I was pretty much a fanatic before joining PR
I’ve just given it an outlet to come out and take over my life. I tried last year, I did a full position by position breakdown of the Rockies going into spring training on a blog over at another site, but pretty much no one read it so my addiction went dormant for a little while till I found this.

WOW
the Big news…Stewart starting at 2nd. I still feel confident that Stewie will start a lot of games there, especially now that Fowler is in the OF taking PT away from S. Smith and other left fielders not named Spillborghs
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
I see Stewart getting playing time whenever any of the other infielders need a break
I’m not sure how baker being up affects that as well, though I envision him more as a pinch-hitter/trade-bait
If Helton sits Atkins moves to first Ian plays third
If Barmes sits, Ian fills in at 2nd
If Tulo sits, Barmes moves to SS and Stewart plays 2nd
and if Atkins sits Stewart plays 3rd
As stated above Baker getting playing time could affect this as well, also Q will get in there as well, though he could be more of a D replacement
by Chacinisthefuture on Apr 1, 2009 1:42 PM MDT up reply actions
Should be some ABs out there
Because of the flexability of guys like Stewart, Barmes and even Atkins at first, there should be some at bats out there for Stewart. Koshansky kind of got caught in a bad place because he was only a first basemen. It the end that left him in Texas. Also, all of the outfielders except for Hawpe can play any outfield spot. That will supply a some at bats for Fowler to see exactly what the Rockies have with him.

With out a doubt...

I'm surprised
Dex is on the team. I’ve never been impressed by him and don’t think he’ll do very well, but I hope he proves me wrong.
Let’s see how cook does today in his final tune-up…
I'm wondering what it take to impress you
I know his call-up last year was a struggle but that’s expected when you jump up that much, what’s been extremely impressive is his work to improve during ST. You take out his atrocious start with 10 k’s in 20abs and it’s pretty impressive for a young kids, plus his D is spectacular
by Chacinisthefuture on Apr 1, 2009 2:21 PM MDT up reply actions 1 recs
let's see
he’s toothpick thin, at 6-4 175…maybe he should gain some muscle so he actually has some power. I’ve also seen quite a few of his hits and they have been pretty lucky, not hard hit, just in the right spot. BUT, once again, I HOPE he proves me wrong, but I just see him as another Renee Reyes or Choo Freeman type bust.
And here's the next place where people miss.
Juan Pierre had filled out completely at 6’0" 170 lbs. He simply wasn’t going to get any bigger without destroying his only baseball talent. Fowler can still add bulk and even as is he has considerably more power than Pierre ever did.
Oh, I wasn't making the comparison myself. Don't worry.
Was just throwing that out there from the sidelines.
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
Whoah...
Rene Reyes or Choo Freeman? Reyes who was 5’11"/215 lbs and 25 years old when he debuted with the Rockies? That’s not exactly a prospect to begin with. And while Freeman once was early in his minor league career, by the time he hit Colorado, that ship had long since sailed by the time he left Asheville. I don’t think you have any idea of how to evaluate minor leaguers if you think Fowler is anywhere close to those two.
so
how far did you get in baseball? I guarantee I am a better evaluator of baseball talent than you are.
Playing baseball does not equate to evaluating talent
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Is this
the baseball equivalent of dropping names? I’m not sure…
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
Than how come you're comparing Fowler to Reyes?
I mean, seriously, how are they at all similar? How is Fowler similar to Freeman for that matter? Because you have baseball experience doesn’t necessarily make you a decent talent evaluator, but I’d like to know where you’re coming from.
The swing
has eerily similar mechanics. The stances may be slightly different but they load much the same way and have a similar length of a swing. Reyes was not a successful MLB hitter.
When are you basing your swing evaluation off of?
by Chacinisthefuture on Apr 1, 2009 3:02 PM MDT up reply actions
I analyzed
his swing pretty heavily during his september call-up and also from video a friend of mine took when they saw him in tulsa. If you want my honest opinion though, barmes has the worst approach of any of our players at the plate…he is a better batter than Q cuz he generates more bat speed though and can get lucky and pop one every once in a while.
Do you want to hear my analysis on Chacin? He needs to develope a consistently decent breaking pitch or he will never be a #1 or a #2 major league starter, more #4 type (he could be a good reliever though with his changeup and heater). Note his lack of strikeouts during the spring outings, and also note that the 2nd time through the lineup is when the teams seemed to score of him.
Now these 2 things I agree w/
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I'd check some more recent results with both of them
The staff has been working pretty hard and it was evidenced by a huge shift in the quality of fowler’s work during ST. The one thing that no one can deny is his speed which is pretty amazing
by Chacinisthefuture on Apr 1, 2009 3:14 PM MDT up reply actions
right hand side or left hand side?
Fowler has two different swing mechanisms. His wrists are able to break a lot quicker and Reyes had almost zero recognition of breaking pitches, Fowler’s plate discipline is also much much better. Sorry, I’m just having a hard time buying that they’re going to have similar results at the MLB level. I trust you saw what you saw, but I’m curious when it was, and how much you’ve seen Dexter hit.
the video
that I have heavily analyzed is from the left side. I will see if my friend will send it to me and I’ll link to it sometime. I admit that analyzing that video and watching in september and a few of his spring games is a small sample size, but I have not been impressed at all thus far.
I’m not trying to be a dick or anything guys, I just have not been drinking the Rockies’ Kool-aid on fowler. I am disappointed Ort didn’t make the squad.
I like the opposing view, and the dose of skepticism is sometimes needed,
I guess what throws me back still are the comparisons to Reyes and Freeman. I just don’t see it. Not at all. I see Fowler at worse being like Mike Davis, the 80’s era outfielder/1B for the A’s and Dodgers that drew the walk before Kirk Gibson’s HR in 1988. He’s the best I can think of a tall lanky guy with speed that doesn’t have the best bat, but the speed and plate discipline and little pop he did have made up for it and he’s still a valuable player in his prime. Fowler’s already well past Freeman and Reyes ever got to in their development, and he still has several seasons to go before he reaches his peak potential.
Do you by chance work for the Pittsburgh Pirates?
Because you seem to be as horrible an evaluator of talent as people in that organization.
The 2009 Colorado Rockies: Expect the Unexpected
lmao
I probably have played farther in baseball than most all posting on here, so kiss my butt. 92 mph fastball and nasty hook before I blew out my UCL and decided to become a chemical engineer…Fowler will stink this season, mark my words…if he does well, I will eat my words and call you daddy.
+1 For Chem-E
I didn’t have amazing stuff but I played for 15 years. I have been observing and learning from anyone willing to teach (as long as it made sense). Fowler will be the real deal, and especially since he will be around Baylor all season now he can’t help but improve hitting wise.

Fowler
has a shot, but his swing is too long for somebody with his lack of muscle mass to do very well. Has baylor been working on shortening his swing this spring?
Yes he has,
especially from the left side. He has only been switch hitting for three years now.

If the fact that you could play a little means you're the best evaluator of talent
Shouldn’t Willie Mays be a MUCH better manager than Joe Torre or Terry Francona?
The 2009 Colorado Rockies: Expect the Unexpected
apples and oranges
somebody that is well-schooled in playing baseball will know things that the average fan, or even the fanatic fan, would not be able to pick up on. Just because the rockies think fowler is gonna be good doesn’t mean his going to be. I admit that hurdle and all those guys know much more about fowler than I do, but I also don’t trust their track record on talent evaluation. Note the Cory Sullivan and the Clint Barmes fetishes (I kow I know, not “top prospects”, but still shows priors for hurdle’s idiocy on talent evaluation), among others, that hurdle has had throughout the years. I guess I’m just being a bit skeptical on the fowler thing.
Sullivan was a starter during te rebuilding years when our MLB-caliber CF was barren
He was released once that era ended. I completely agree with Barmes’ poor approach at the plate, but a combination of his offensive results (as good if not better than Baker) and defensive superiority have earned him the playing time, as there’s no one else within the organization to supplant him yet. Stewart might this year. And if you advance that the FO should have replaced him outside of the organization, few here will argue

That
is very good news. I am saying he won’t be good right NOW, he might be good in a year or two when he fills out…I think its a poor choice for him to be in the MLB right now, it’s too early for him based on several factors and if he is not successful it may hurt his confidence a lot…and confidence is oh so important for a baseball player.
I actually agree with you
His hot streak in ST is a nice story, but I didn’t want to rush him, as he has appeared unpolished to me as well. Still, his youth, speed, decent plate discipline, superior defense tell me he’ll carve out a nice career…FAR more than Freeman or Reyes. He may or may not become a Carlos Beltran, but he’s young and improving rapidly. The Fowler you saw was by no means a finished product

He is
still on their 40 man roster. I don’t think he’s going to make their squad. He’s a AAAA slugger, much like Koshansky. Gotta be able to hit a breaking ball to be successful in the majors.

Royals
2, rockies 1, going into the top of the third. Cook is probably working on his “slider” today…I say slider with the quotations because it is a pitiful excuse of a breaking ball…Imagine if he could throw a really good breaker, he’d probably be in the running for a cy-young instead of being a fringe #1 starter. Spring training is the perfect time to work on it though.
Too bad
we couldn’t morph jason grilli and aaron cook into one pitcher. we could call him Grilli Cook…LMAO…he’d throw a nasty sinker and a nasty slider and would be 21-4 on the season with a 2.35 ERA.

1st to home on a single would be sweet to see.

He did it earlier this spring
I forget who was down there for it.
I want to see him go home to home on a single personally.

I was
March 17 vs KC actually. I think it tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. He was running on the play (naturally) and the ball was hit just right. And I think they weren’t paying much attention. It was kindo fa confusing play

Almost pulled it out with Dex and Tulo doing most of the damage, in on 4 of the five runs.

Yeah
Was good to see Tulo padding his stats up a bit and Fowler showing he is excited about making the team.

Belisle or Morillo?
Who SHOULD make the team? I’m conflicted. I like Morillo’s stuff and he’s limited his walks this spring, but you don’t know what you’re going to get with him. Much like Morales and Dex.
The big factor
is we will lose Morillo for good if he doesn’t make the team. He’s out of options and there’s a good chance one of the other 29 teams is willing to take a chance on a young live arm (San Diego?)

Interersting quote in that article
I believe they will get a deal done, either soon or next week when pitchers are designated for assignment.

I was really only looking at Tulo and Fowler in this one
Fowler to see how he responded to making the club and Tulo to see if he could get things going. And they did. The L is nothing and neither are Cook’s dingers…we know what we’ll get from him. (I suppose you could look at Morillo vs. Belisle too, but bringing in a pitcher would lower the reward for winning that battle)
