Apparently no trade partners for Moriillo materialized.

I don't understand....

… why they didn’t just bring Belisle with them to start with. Was it to give them more time to try and work out a trade for Morillo?

by Greg Stanwood on Apr 10, 2009 11:28 AM MDT reply actions

that was/is the hope...

to try and keep him past the end of season period where the waiver lists just get saturated with players. I don’t really know if one week makes that much difference, however. I guess the team still has some time to find a trade, but it’s not looking promising right now.

I'm kind of surprised we didn't give hima chance to stick, at least until Buchholz comes back.

He had a decent Spring, and we wouldn’t have lost Belisle anyway. If Morillo failed, then we could make this switcheroo.

I agree.

It’s not like Belisle is some amazing pitcher who is going to save our staff, or a prospect with a lot of upside. He’s pretty well established what he can do in the majors. He’s the “replacement” level pitcher. Morillo at least has some upside.

I think Morillo has reached a point in his career that it's really hard to keep on speaking of "upside"

Sometimes these pitchers work out down the road (see JDLR) but they almost always require a change of scenery first and usually a couple of cuts. I really don’t know if hanging onto him does anything for him other than insuring he remains peripheral, on the cusp of something but never reaching it.

That's just like

The situation with the Dodgers and Greg Miller. He still throws gas but there’s basically no way he ever makes an impact with the Dodgers in my opinion. He needs to see if he can work it out somewhere else.

by Brendan Scolari on Apr 10, 2009 1:30 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree

But we should have given him a chance to prove it wasn’t just upside, aka, game action. If Morillo came in and pitched some good innings, we wouldn’t be just saying “upside” anymore.

High Risk / High Criticism move

The FO must be pretty confident that Morillo isn’t going to amount to much if they are blantly willing to lose him to waivers for a non-roster invite.

Besides JoKo, when was the last time we exposed a prospect to waivers? The last couple of years we managed to trade our “optionless” prospects.

Pedro Strop last fall

At least he’s the last one we lost iirc

Jeff Salazar

comes to mind but that was a couple of years ago.

Jeff Nieman I believe last year. Wasn’t there another reliever we lost last year?

Rockies have a BAD tendency to give away players. And we will possibly give 2 more way when Morales is needed to start next (assuming he really is our #5 still) and when Bucholtz comes back.

Niemann was always with the Rays...

I don’t know if you’re referring to somebody else, maybe?

Alberto Arias is the other reliever the Rockies lost via waivers last season.

the lefty we lost

wasn’t his name Nieman? and Arias was the other one

Can't imagine there are many

players from any organization that have actually ended up passing through waivers and then have gone on and turned out to be an asset to the new team?

Actually plenty have, sometimes dramatically, like Carlos Pena

Some guys just have really slow development clocks, you can’t really do much when that’s the case.

Presumption

that we are the few who aren’t fortunate enough to be in Denver or have tickets for today’s game.
