Game #4: Cole Hamels vs. Jason Marquis

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies, Apr 10, 2009 2:10 PM MDT

We can expect some fun in the home opener as Philly and their finesse lefty (at least for now) ace visit:

The world champions come to Denver expecting their miseries to be solved at altitude, let's just prolong them for three more games.

Go Rockies!

Who's On First?

Now on the KOA pre-game show. Awesome!

Dang it!

Why doesn’t Gameday Audio have the pregame show? I wish I had an AM radio at my desk.

by RoxnSox09 on Apr 10, 2009 1:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Okay, so that wasn't the pregame show.

It was the end of Dave Logan’s show. But apparently they always end with Who’s on First? before every home opener. That was so cool.

Fowlers attempt at 3rd

If Fowler attempts that 1,000 times, what is his expectation? I would bet it is better than if he doesn’t run. Bill James did an analysis of this years ago, and he suggested that the runner should go when it is close.

Official MLB rules for interference:

Rule 7.08(b) Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not.
If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire’s judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional.

by Charlie77 on Apr 10, 2009 3:23 PM MDT reply actions

That rule appears to relate to a batted ball

instead of a thrown ball

by Andrew T. Fisher on Apr 10, 2009 3:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Other rule concering baserunners path towards the base..

7.08 Any runner is out when—
(a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner’s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely;

It's opening day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Charlie77 on Apr 10, 2009 3:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Hmm

He wasn’t avoiding a tag, so that doesn’t fit perfectly, but I’d guess the three feet rule carries over. And he might have been three inches off the line, but not three feet.

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Apr 10, 2009 3:27 PM MDT up reply actions

I can't find any specific rule to backup the umpire..

It does say if in the umpire’s judgement the runner interfered with the fielder he is called out. It’s sort of an ambiguous rule. I thought the runner on a bunt had to run in foul territory, but it doesn’t specifically mention that in the Baserunners portion of the rulebook.

It's opening day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Charlie77 on Apr 10, 2009 3:30 PM MDT up reply actions

It wasn't a batted ball.

I assume you’re talking about the play with Dex. It was on the throw to first that the ball hit Fowler.
