Phillies 8, Rockies 4: Myers continues Coors mastery, Phillies strike back
While it certainly wasn't as bad as Jorge De La Rosa's last outing against the Phillies, tonight's performance against the defending world champions (2-3) also resulted in a loss for the Rockies (3-2). De La Rosa (0-1) went 4.2 IP, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a losing effort. From watching the game it appeared that De La Rosa was on the most part locating his pitches well and throwing with good velocity. Unfortunately, he gave up a key bases clearing double to Ryan Howard in the third and got into trouble in the fifth, getting pulled with runners on first and third. Ryan Speier then allowed a two-run triple to Jayson Werth, and the Phillies never looked back.
Offensively, the Rockies were only able to muster four hits against Brett Myers (1-1), though three of them were home-runs--off the bats of Troy Tulowitzki, Garrett Atkins, and Clint Barmes--and the other was a double by Brad Hawpe. Myers went seven innings to improve his record against the Rockies to 7-0 (5-0 at Coors Field) and the Phillies pounded out 15 hits against the Rockies' pitching staff.
Also of interest in the game was the Rockies debut of Jason Hammel, who was recently acquired from the Rays. He went 2.2 innings and gave up five hits and two runs. Most of the batters Hammel faced hit the ball hard off of him, including a seventh inning home-run by Raul Ibanez. All in all, the Rockies' bullpen gave up three runs on nine hits in 4.1 IP.

Later inning malaise hit our Rox tonight. Meyers was awfully good though, recovering nicely after each Rockies blast. Despite the 3 HRs, I thought the Rox looked flat tonight. Just felt like there was a lack of energy from the guys. Could just be a let down from Opening Day? Oh well. It’s not like we lost the pennant tonight. We can still win the series tomorrow, and head out to ChiTown feeling good about ourselves. 160-2! Woot!
The great thing about baseball is that there's a crisis every day. ~Gabe Paul
I hate to say it and I'm not trying to be a Yankee fan or writer here
but I did not see anything impressive from Hammel tonight. Not the velocity (which seemed to be down from what I was reading), not the movement on his fastball or his secondary pitches. He threw a couple of decent changeups and that was about it. Everything was up, not sure why the rush to make him our #5, but I hope this outing has just made Morales look even better.
It did not make me feel at ease that we lost Rodriguez for that either, but in terms of the trade I will wait to rush to judgement. I just did not see anything real impressive in his repetoire. I hope he will become what our scouts are seeing, but for now I am sticking w/ my hope to see Morales again.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
One....outing
first in Coors, first with a new team, come on.
He’ll level out here. He didn’t have spring with the Rockies. He has a lot of adjustment to a new club to make.

"and not rush to judgement," is what I meant to say.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
It will be very interesting to see how the team reacts.
If the Rockies truly want to be special, they need to be able to bounce back after poor outings. A solid start from Cook and patience at the plate should do the trick tomorrow. Luckily, a friend came thru with an extra ticket, so I’ll be at the game. Hopefully it’ll be another blast of a game, like Friday was. I can’t wait!

Tough Night For the 'Pen
They just couldn’t throw strikes. Any of them. That happens from time to time, though. I’m not too concerned. I have complete confidence in our bullpen. Let’s go win the rubber match tomorrow!
As an aside, somehow I always wind up right next to the people that want to start the friggin’ wave. The wave is the worst thing ever invented, and they always seem to choose the worst time to do it. It occurred in the 3rd inning with 2 out, right before Rollins started the rally that led to the Howard 3-run double. It may not have had anything to do with it, but I can’t imagine that the distraction of it is good for the pitcher. For the love of all that is good and decent, leave the wave in the football stadiums, if you really think it’s necessary. It doesn’t belong in baseball. For that matter, it doesn’t belong anywhere.
List of Prerequisites to be Denver Broncos QB:
1.Don’t EVER compare yourself to Elway, and we’ll make sure we don’t either. 10 years is enough time to heal.
2.Don’t make our ownership or management have to call YOU time after time.
3.Don’t piss off Mr. B, he signs your checks.
4. Try your best, we’ll support you if you leave 100% out on the field.
5.Neckbeards are REQUIRED as of 4.2.2009

Hammel
I was going to say Hammel looked freakin awful out there.
He got hit HARD.
Howard almost hit a dinger off him that sent Smith to the warning track, Ibanez crushed one, was it Werth that sent one to the warning track in center? Geez, it frustrates me how in love the Rockies can be with, excuse my language, but crappy ass pitchers. Belisle is another guy that comes to mind. And while he was awesome for us the other day, Jason Marquis is another name to throw out there. Sorry, my little rant there lol.
It's all Rox Girl's fault
for gloating at the Rays for keeping Niemann and trading us Hammel.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
I pulled down a serious jinx on that one, didn't I?
Oh well. Velocity wasn’t great, pitches were flat, not anything to really like from this performance at all other than the fact he threw three innings on a night when things didn’t seem to be going our way anyway, saving our pen some stress. We better hope he gets better fast.
Let's not sell Hammel this fast
There are some upsides

While I’m not terribly impressed with the break he gets, I think that Sinker/Change combo should be stressed more by Apodaca. It’s really gonna be his only hope of surviving here, because while he gets a little cut action on his fastball, it’s a very hittable pitch in general.

I'm not selling at all...
I’m just saying I hope he gets better fast. The team still needs a strong start.
