Cubs pitchers one-hit Rockies; same pitchers thank ump for being generous with the Ks
Bad weather? Check.
Six walks? Check.
One hit? Check.
With bad weather in Chicago today, the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs waited through a rain delay to play this game. Ubaldo Jimenez started the game, allowed three runs in 3 2/3 innings and walked six batters. Ted Lilly no-hit the Rockies for 6 2/3 innings, allowing a Garrett Atkins single in the seventh and a walk before leaving the game. He also struck out eight batters. Or the umpire helped him strike out eight batters. Cubs pitchers combined to strike out 12 Rockies, and 6 of them were looking.
Did I leave anything out?
Yes, I did. Clint Hurdle weas ejected from the game, possibly for telling the ump that he couldn't see. And Brad Hawpe left the game with no explanation as of yet.

Six walks? Check.
Sadly that was just Ubaldo. The staff surrendered 9 as a whole. The four relievers walk lines – 6,1,1,1. That’s what you want to see in the IP column, not the walk column.
Also, Hawpe apparently had a hammy cramp

It would be nice to see
Hurdle’s ejection marked on the FanGraph. Not that his ejection made it more or less likely that the Rockies would lose, but the ejection does lend credibility to our complaints about the poor officiating. Does it not?

Hurdle after the game
“It was a tough game. The strike zone. A couple of guys were arguing strike calls that never argue. You get some tough calls.”
On Ubaldo’s balk: “I looked at the tape. He didn’t balk.”
Some thinly veiled accusations there, albeit warranted

Also Ubaldo after the game
Agrees there was no balk, said it was the coldest day he’s ever pitched in, and he had a difficult time maintaining feeling in his fingers enough to control his fastball.
I’m not sure why Lilly had no problems…though I suppose Lilly is American, and Ubaldo is Dominican, not to mention lankier.

Its a good thing
we didn’t sign Orlando Hudson. First cycle in Dodger Stadium history today. I’m much happier with the guys we’ve got out there at 2B.
ooh! a sarcasm detector!
now THAT is a useful invention!!

Team looks different then it did in spring training. Pitchers can’t hit a strike zone, batter’s look like they’ve never seen a fastball or a slider before.
I’m getting this out….just in case

so you'll pull it out after a bad outing
But you won’t award the cy young after a good outing.
Give these guys some time. Things well settle in soon enough. Check back in 2 weeks and if everyone’s still missing the strike zone, you can get actually worried.

conditions just looked miserable today
but they were miserable for both sides. And BTW, what’s up with Iannetta?

cold weather = epic fail
The more I think about it, the more I convince myself that the Rockies are a warm weather team. I realize it’s rudimentary, but it does explain 1) a great spring by almost the entire team, 2) taking two of three from the Dbacks in Phoenix, 3) yesterday’s collapse, and 4) today’s abomination.
While it’s true that both teams had to deal with the miserable conditions, Ted Lilly has played over half his career in the AL East. There’s a good chance he’s more familiar with cold games in cities like Boston, New York and Toronto (dome notwithstanding). At the very least, he can probably handle the cold better than a young Latin player like Jimenez today or Corpas yesterday.
That said, spring training + 7 games is too small a sample size to make such a sweeping generalization. Plus, I’d hope that a professional baseball team isn’t influenced so much by something as arbitrary and (at times) trivial as the weather. If not, the front office should look to invest a portable humidor heatidor.

Rookie Ump
I’d never heard of Andy Fletcher before, so I’m assuming he made the jump from the minors this year. If that’s what we have to look forward to from him, I hope that he doesn’t have a long career in the majors. That was absolutely the worst strike zone that I’ve ever seen. When you have Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki, Garrett Atkins, Brad Hawpe, and Ryan Spilborghs all PO’d at you, you’re not doing a good job.

According to Rox Girl he was umpiring last year and tried to award a three-ball walk

Yep
HERE’S MLB page He even worked our 2007 World Series.
but you have to see his picture:

was the home plate umpire for Kevin Millwood’s no-hitter on April 27, 2003
Aha! Proof that he wants to skew the game into no-hitters!
I sadly have three (other) things in common with him…sigh

Good to know
Is it just me, or is he a little cross-eyed?
Regardless, I have a new least-favorite umpire. I didn’t think anyone could take that title from Mike Everitt and Gerry Davis (who, by the way, are on the same crew this year, the one that worked the Rockies/Phillies series over the weekend). I’ve never thought much of either of them.
The best umpires are Dan Iassogna, CB Bucknor, Tim McLelland (He’s not very animated, but he’s steady), and Angel Campos. That’s a dream crew. Throw in Jerry Crawford and Brian O’Nora, and you have a World Series crew.

Not a bad idea

Meh
losing 12-11 is the same as losing how we lost today in the long run. They have an (unusual) off-day tomorrow to regroup and hopefully can bring the O against Rich Harden on Wed… too bad Rich Harden is basically the best pitcher in baseball…
He's not on the DL yet?

While perusing the Denver morning fish wrap this morning and looking at the standings
I noticed a new column I don’t remember seeing….“WC”. Right there along with “W”, “L”, “Percentage” and “GB” After searching I found that it meant “Wild Card”.
Now I’m all for everyone having something to look forward to, but Holy Moly, keeping track of the Wild Card standings 6 games into the season is a bit of overkill.

It's a good thing to keep track of
for Rockies fans. May be aiming low, sure, but history is on their side:

Division titles: 0

on April 14.
