All of baseball to wear 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson
Tomorrow 4/15/09, all uniformed personnel will wear #42 to honor the 62nd anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier.
IMHO, Jackie Robinson Day should be a national holiday and tax day should get bumped to the 16th, so as not to infringe. I don't have a number #42 to wear tomorrow, but I will be sporting a #22 Buck O'Neil/KC Monarchs shirt.

Jackie Robinson Day
tomorrow at Citi Field. Can’t wait to walk through the Jackie Robinson Rotunda.

By the way,
Fowler is going to look awesome wearing #42. (Full disclosure: I’m starting to get a little uncomfortable with my own man-crush on Dex.)

Eh....
I’ve still got one on Mark Reynolds. It’s okay, PS. It’s okay to be who you really are inside. ;-)

That's
gonna be a lot of wasted jerseys.
Sorry, that was the first thing I thought of — everyone in beisbol is gonna have a jersey they’ll wear ONCE.

Hmmm...
“wasted”…. that was pretty un-PC of me.
Point remains, though. Major League Baseball is being embarrassingly hypocritical.

The article doesn't mention specifically,
but usually these special jerseys get auctioned off for charity.

I don't like it
I think that they’re going way over the top on the Jackie Robinson tributes. Don’t get me wrong – the man deserves a lot of love. For the 62nd anniversary, though? I could see it for #50, #75, #100, or even #42, but not for this one.

This Was the First
They used to allow one player on each team to wear #42, then that morphed into anyone that wanted to wear it. This was the first year that it was required. LaTroy Hawkins and Glenallen Hill have worn it in the past for the Rockies.
I know, it’s much ado about nothing, and what I’m saying may sound bad. I just think that they could come up with a better way to honor Robinson’s memory.

Yeah, it used to be by choice.
Upton, CY and Byrnes wore it for us last year.
