Game #10: Aaron Cook vs. Chad Billingsley

Today's game is a big one.  A win today would mean a lot - that either Aaron Cook had his first great start or the lineup brutalized Billingsley.  It would cleanse our palette from the bitter taste from yesterday's bullpen meltdown.  It would mean halting LA's six game winning streak.  It would give Colorado a very legitimate chance to steal a series on the road against a hot Los Angeles team, as the Rockies have a significant advantage in tomorrow's pitching match-up - and a win there means just one series loss in four so far.  This is the kind of game you want your Opening Day starter to win.

If you are tired of George Frazier, the game is on Fox.

Don Baylor: 627-689, 3 winning years, .476 Winning %
Clint the Clown: 516-597, 1 winning year, .464 Winning %
Jim Tracy: 562-572, .496 Winning %, and if you thrown out his years with the Pirates, he’s lookin pretty good.

by wolf213 on Apr 18, 2009 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually when you consider this...

Baylor’s years were the earliest expansion years, so he’s looking better than Tracy, as far as I’m concerned.

I agree

and I would rather Hurdle’s replacement be Baylor…. but right now, I wish Hurdle would just have a replacement.

by wolf213 on Apr 18, 2009 3:16 PM MDT up reply actions

If you're going to throw out

Tracy’s year with the Pirates, I think there’s probably at least one season that you should throw out for Hurdle. Don’t know how that would change anything, though.

And yeah, basically none of them are clear upgrades, IMO. Though Mondogarage does have a point below.

You don’t throw out Hurdles years with the Rockies. All of his teams have had more talent then any of the Pirates teams Tracy had to manage.

And if you had 2x the budget of the other manager

Then going to the playoffs and losing every time is EPIC FAIL.

Seriously, what does Tracy bring to the team that’s better than Hurdle? Saying he made multiple playoffs, with a much much larger budget, isn’t a qualification.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

How about a

close to .500 Record as a manager.

by wolf213 on Apr 18, 2009 3:19 PM MDT up reply actions

The differences in records

are almost negligible. It’s not like Hurdle is at .350 or something. I think you have to go deeper than just records.

by holly96 on Apr 18, 2009 3:21 PM MDT up reply actions

With a near unlimited budget, he's better be well above .500 as a manager

Tracy’s not that great a manager, really. Though he may manage a bullpen staff better than Hurdle. I don’t think firing Hurdle just to bring in Tracy is really an upgrade.

but all the positive projections for this team were based on improvements by a lot of players that are not manifest right now. And some guys that we expected to be solid at worst (Cook, Iannetta, Helton) are really looking bad so far. Its still too early to throw in the towel, but its hard to see the sunny side anymore.

And if it wasn’t obvious before (it was) the Dodgers are a LOT better than we are and its unrealistic to think we can compete with them as presently constituted.
