Game #10: Aaron Cook vs. Chad Billingsley
Today's game is a big one. A win today would mean a lot - that either Aaron Cook had his first great start or the lineup brutalized Billingsley. It would cleanse our palette from the bitter taste from yesterday's bullpen meltdown. It would mean halting LA's six game winning streak. It would give Colorado a very legitimate chance to steal a series on the road against a hot Los Angeles team, as the Rockies have a significant advantage in tomorrow's pitching match-up - and a win there means just one series loss in four so far. This is the kind of game you want your Opening Day starter to win.
If you are tired of George Frazier, the game is on Fox.
Aaron Cook was at his absolute best against Los Angeles in 2008. In fact, he owned the Dodgers - in 23.2 IP covering three starts, Red surrendered just three runs for an ERA of 1.14. Only Arizona struck out against Cook more last season.
Chad Billingsley faced the Rockies twice last year, posting nearly identical starts with 6 IP and 2 runs allowed in each. He is 1-2 with a 5.30 ERA vs. Colorado in his career.

At least the Cubs are a local team

Or if you want to look at it
Don Baylor: 627-689, 3 winning years, .476 Winning %
Clint the Clown: 516-597, 1 winning year, .464 Winning %
Jim Tracy: 562-572, .496 Winning %, and if you thrown out his years with the Pirates, he’s lookin pretty good.
Actually when you consider this...
Baylor’s years were the earliest expansion years, so he’s looking better than Tracy, as far as I’m concerned.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
If you're going to throw out
Tracy’s year with the Pirates, I think there’s probably at least one season that you should throw out for Hurdle. Don’t know how that would change anything, though.
And yeah, basically none of them are clear upgrades, IMO. Though Mondogarage does have a point below.
No
You don’t throw out Hurdles years with the Rockies. All of his teams have had more talent then any of the Pirates teams Tracy had to manage.
Those 2002-2003 teams were pretty bad
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Fine
You take Tracy’s years away from the Pit, you take away the 2002-2003 Years for Hurdle.
One Manager is well above .500 the other isn’t. Care to guess which one?
Which manager won multiple playoff series?
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Which manager has been to the playoffs more than once
And lost in the first round every time.
And we’re not talking about George Karl
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
And if you had 2x the budget of the other manager
Then going to the playoffs and losing every time is EPIC FAIL.
Seriously, what does Tracy bring to the team that’s better than Hurdle? Saying he made multiple playoffs, with a much much larger budget, isn’t a qualification.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Tracy also had way more team resources.
Look, I’m not disagreeing that a change may be needed away from Hurdle. I just don’t think Tracy is going to automatically make this team better.

I don't think firing Hurdle is the answer....
What is Jim Tracy going to bring to the team? Baylor found his niche.
Check out my website...www.rockiesreview.com
The differences in records
are almost negligible. It’s not like Hurdle is at .350 or something. I think you have to go deeper than just records.
With a near unlimited budget, he's better be well above .500 as a manager
Tracy’s not that great a manager, really. Though he may manage a bullpen staff better than Hurdle. I don’t think firing Hurdle just to bring in Tracy is really an upgrade.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Well
after last nights loss and many others just like, I would Like to have manager that knew how to handle a pitching staff. is that to much to ask for?
I don't disagree that Hurdle is horrible with a staff
But there’s no evidence that Tracy’s any better.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Speaking as a Dodgers fan who remembers the Jim Tracy years....
He’ll put your worst hitter batting 3rd(Oscar Robles), convert Yorbit into your starting 1st baseman, and take shots at your GM while claiming to be an aw shucks kind of a guy.
Hurdle may be bad, Jim Tracy is even worse.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
You keep calling for Tracy, yet you haven't given one reason why he's better
So how do you know the opposite?
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
If you read my comments above
you would see that I actually prefer Baylor.
My question is, what has Hurdle done to prove he shouldn’t be fired? Let some others get a chance to prove they suck as well.
I'd be perfectly comfortable with Baylor as manager
But I don’t know that he’s actually interested in that.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I don't think that's the issue.
I just don’t think any of the in-house options are an obvious, no doubt upgrade. It’s just change for change’s sake. Which I suppose may be needed.

that this team is going nowhere. Their pitchin is likely the worst in their division. The relief corp is very bad. They strikeout way too much. If we're no more than 2-3 games under .500 at April 30th
We’ll be right in the race. Our sched this month is SO much worse than anyone else’s. But we have to be 5 over .500 by the end of May…
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
well, we won't be that far away from .500, even once we lose.
there’s still time. it’s 11 games into the season
I hate giving up so early
but all the positive projections for this team were based on improvements by a lot of players that are not manifest right now. And some guys that we expected to be solid at worst (Cook, Iannetta, Helton) are really looking bad so far. Its still too early to throw in the towel, but its hard to see the sunny side anymore.
And if it wasn’t obvious before (it was) the Dodgers are a LOT better than we are and its unrealistic to think we can compete with them as presently constituted.
Dex, Stew, Morales…let’s see what they have.
agreed
though I’d add Tulo to your list and possibly Atkins

Look at the schedule though
the first couple of months are heavy road months. They could be buried. I think they are a 70-75 win team.

I was waiting for the Helton haters to come out...only took until April 19th.

Don't get me wrong...
I loved Helton…but it has to be past-tense, because he’s a statue on the basepaths…and you can’t have that
My favorite Rockie of all time
but you have to face the facts when your done. I know how hard it is to do because I had to do it myself. It sucks because you give up the one thing you love more than anything and can nver get it back.

Agree
for many, many years he was the only reason to watch this team. He’s always been exactly what I’ve wanted out of a favorite player: (1) really good; (2) a good teammate; (3) a good representative for the team. You’ll never hear me say a bad thing about Helton…but it may be past time…
I can’t even think of what jersey I’d replace my #17 with if he was gone. Lame. Get it together, Todd.
I spotted him 2 weeks
cause of his spring training.
