Spring Training Game #34: Chaz Roe vs Tony Barnette
Doh! sorry everybody, the earlier start than normal today threw me off. Zero to zero in the second right now in this battle of minor leaguers.
So while tickets to the Rockies home opener sold out some time ago, there are still 3,000 seats available at Chase Field to see the season opener next Monday, despite the Diamondbacks having the lowest average ticket price in the majors.

Pretty good lineup, if you ask me. Sure, it’s D’backs scrubs, but we want to get into their bullpen.

There's an exhibition game tonight at AT&T.
And thus begins my most hated part of baseball season. The Giants screwing up my commute. Joy.
In other new, even though we’ve got minor leaguers pitching, at least we’ve got some regulars in the lineup.
Any word on if Iannetta
is catching U’ball in a minor league game today?
http://twitter.com/blakebomber
I don't know, actually
It makes sense that he would be given the time he needs to spend with the pitchers to catch up, but Torrealba’s not in the lineup at TEP today so it could be either one.
Hi all!
I sense a somewhat laissez-faire attitude tonight (I don’t mean you, Rox Girl!) Is it because we’ve now got the 25 confirmed (or as near as), all that’s left is for the season to begin?
I'm just happy my cable provider
Finally got the HD feed of MLB Network. Of course, they’ve dumped Mojo for HDNet, so I’m still extremely suspicious that we won’t get the HD of FSN Rockies games.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
My cable company dropped Mojo as well
I liked three sheets a lot.
I noticed this
last night and yelled for joy. I heard that Fox Sports RM HD will debut on Comcast on Monday – I’ll believe it when I see it.

Naw, it was sorta based on a UK music magazine
I’ve really missed London Live since it was taken off. Not as if HDNet actually shows anything decent that’s not already on other Comcast-owned channels.
I’ll say this much, if I can’t get my Rox games in HD this season, I will finally dump my entire Comcast service, TV & internet, for something different.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
D-backs 2 for 2 off of Fasano/Roe
And they’ve only had two baserunners and it’s not like Wilson and Reynolds are blazers. Roe must not do a very good job of slowing them down. This could actually reflect even better on Michael McKenry’s D, given how infrequently runners tried to go on him last season in Modesto.
Reynolds
had double digits and was 2nd on the team in steals last year. He’s got deceptive “white guy speed”.
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
Still not exactly Grady Sizemore
Who really has white guy speed and it was a steal of third off an RHP, which is a pretty bad sign usually.
Well, no. Reynolds ain't Sizemore.
But he ain’t some lumbering Adam Dunn, either.

I

"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."

and of course, that's mainly because speed is speed...
And I don’t really buy into Skins’ “deceptive white guy speed” statement in the first place. Just so I’m clear on that.
Hey, RG
What do you know about a left handed pitcher we’ve got named Kyle Walker? Out of Univ. of Texas. Played in Casper last season.
Major major stuff, major control issues,
He’s got a legit MLB arm if the Rockies can get him to throw it over the plate, why? Have you heard something?
My guess would be Asheville,
If he does get assigned to Modesto, it’s a very good sign, if he starts the season in extended or gets slated for Tri-City, it means he’s still has his work cut out for him.
meeting the kid kind of gives you someone to follow a little more closely and
being from same area gives a little extra rooting interest.

Mentioned in the ‘Hometown’ thread that i’m headed down there for a game in 2 weeks. I am taking my Grandpa to their series on the 13th against the Cards; really debated going this weekend and going to opening day instead – but he’s from STL, so thought he’d appreciate it more. Was kind of a tough decision when I saw that I could pay half the price to go to actual opening day that i’d have to pay for the home opener.

April's probably the best month to see baseball in Phoenix, too, outside March
So the too hot and dry to go outside excuse doesn’t really hold true.
I really don’t think they have nearly as strong a brand as the Rockies in their home region, even though they get credit for it.
Interesting to see
how much the Rox play in Phoenix in April. 6 home games all month. Looking around at schedules on the other teams it looks like MLB has steered clear of stadiums where they might have a risk of having what happened in Cleveland 2 years ago happen again. The Twins play like 19 home games in april (not 100% sure on that #) – want to bet that won’t happen next year when they open their new stadium…
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
It's not just the brand.
It’s also the market. Over 50% of current Arizona residents were born elsewhere. Myself, for example. Most of them bring their loyalties from their old regional teams. We’re gonna need to have an entire generation grow up with the Dbacks before their brand is stronger.

I take the train.
Driving could be faster at times depending on the traffic, but definitely more expensive and more stressful.
Plus, the exit I take on the occasions when I do drive was closed 10am to 9pm Mon-Wed this week for filming some tv show. That would have been a pain.
So how do Giant games complicate?
Just more people riding?
Listen, this signature line is a big part of who I am.
by frightened inmate #2 on Apr 2, 2009 2:41 PM MDT up reply actions
A multitude of ways
Mainly stemming from the fact that the train station is a couple blocks from AT&T, and I take light rail from work to the station that goes right past the ballpark.
On game days, there are always a ton of people on the light rail, and since I get on the stop after where all the people coming from BART get in, it’s packed. Depending on how well-spaced the train cars are, sometimes one or two will go by with no room. And if they do have room, we’re packed together like sardines.
Then, the light rail speed limit going past the ballpark is lower on game days. And it generally takes awhile for all the fans to get off so we can continue on to the train station.
And sometimes the light rail is all backed up, it takes forever to get from the ballpark to the train station. Occasionally I get off at the ballpark and walk the rest of the way, but if I don’t time it right, I’ll miss my train.
And that doesn’t get into when there are day games and I end up on a train with a bunch of drunk Giants fans going home, when all I want is to take a nap.
So yeah, that’s the long story of how the Giants are my nemesis in more ways than one.
Sometimes I just purposely work later
so I can avoid the game crowds. But then I miss more of the Rockies game, since I’m travelling.
Why?
Because unlike your Christian team, we Dbacks ppl have no moral fiber? ;-)

Are there any thoughts
about why they chose Roe for today’s start? I wonder if he has been pitching real well on the back fields and thats why he’s getting the opportunity. I would love for him to turn the corner and give us something this year, especially being a 1st rounder (sandwich pick).
Also has anyone heard anything about how Frazier’s son has looked?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Parker's been looking really good from what I hear...
I don’t know if there was much more than convenience of scheduling to give Roe this start today, but his results have been pretty solid so far.
Do you have the scouting report on Parker?
He has done decent for a guy expected to start in Tulsa. It was a positive outing I think. Obviously needs to get a better handle on the running game, but otherwise not bad.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Keeping everything on the ground's a plus,
The only extra base hits were to Reynolds and Upton, so that’s at least a little deserving of forgiveness at his level, I guess I was probably expecting worse. The running game does seem to be an issue though.
I don’t have an official scouting report on Frazier, but a scout who’s been in Arizona did tell me to keep an eye on him this season, that he’s looking poised and the scout thinks he’s going to have a big season.
That is good to hear, I will be watching Parker this year
Does he start the season w/ Modesto?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I haven't seen assignments yet,
But at 20 years old, I doubt it. He would have to skip over one of the Friedrich/Graham/Riordan/Billings/Fabian group anyway, and that would be tough.
Thats right, for some reason I thought he was at Asheville last year
But he was in Tri-City, correct?

But Gold Dot actually works better because Skins’ explanation is too convoluted and doesn’t fit with the Ryan’s actual results, people will understand it to mean that Speier throws bullets with pinpoint precision rather than giving them up and the last laugh is for us.
I thought about using that explanation, too.
But it was too pro-Rockie.

Why I don't like sidecar is because of the cocktail

miss new comments when there the thread is busy? Even with ‘z’, I think if I’m in the middle of z-ing through a bunch of new comments and a new one is posted prior to where I’m at, it skips over it and marks it read without me seeing it. This is disconcerting. I must see all new comments. It is a compulsion.
This is why
I used “C” and “X”, rather than Z. Z automatically marks a comment as read. Plus, this way I can leave some comments marked unread if I mean to respond to them later.

I spelled “COMMEMORATIVE” “COMEMORATIVE”. And I KNEW I was spelling it wrong when I did it, too…
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
At the area level
I got out of the oral portion by misspelling “embarrassed.” It was embarrassing. And I still have trouble with that word. But I was top eight and went on to district, anyway (which was basically county, I think). JeffCo school district is gigantic.
Hmmm....
How’d you misspell it?

But
she seems to be PR’s resident well-versed music expert, so
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
Oy, I'll make no such claims to that title
I sure hope more PR people know more than me, but as for pierzynskirules not knowing who John Denver is, it’s not at all surprising, most of the places that you would hear his music now wouldn’t explicitly state that they’re John Denver songs, particularly something like Annie’s Song, which would be at weddings or the like.
This is why
God invented peer-to-peer file sharing — so, if you don’t know an artist, you can go indiscriminately download their twenty most popular songs.
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
I have a hang-up when it comes to
illegal file sharing. I am a rule abider by nature most of the time. Which is why I’ve spent way too much money over the years at iTunes.
But, c'mon....
like I just said… it was invented by God, so it must be okay.
I don’t think I’ve paid for more than about 5 or 6 songs in my life, but I do still buy CDs. (I may be the only person. I dunno.) If I (illegally) download some music and I like it enough, I give the artist some money anyway.
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
I only buy CDs very rarely.
So you have me there. The only time I download something illegally is when something’s not available on iTunes and I really, really want it. So I don’t follow my own rule perfectly, but I do for the most part.
Well, jeez....
you might as well be a regular old jewel thief, then. :-)
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
Heh
At least I admit it.
But that really only happened back when I was really into a certain tv show and was obsessed with getting every song heard on the show. Some were new or obscure, so I had to look elsewhere. But, if it says anything about me, I kept a list and replaced them if they came available.
I do too
But I think that’s because I’m a creative artist myself some of the time and most of my friends are most of the time, and while P2P doesn’t really hurt the big people, it can really crush the small-timers.
You're a lyricist
for musicals?
I would imagine that’d bring a lot of satisfaction upon completion…. I’m guessing that on a project of that size, when you’re done, you really do feel like you’ve finished an opus.
I don’t have the creative talent nor the patience for something like that. :-(
Insert witty and/or humorous signature here.
not quite for musicals,
But that’s mostly because I haven’t met the right people so far, I think I’d like to try it at some point. I guess the better analogy for my larger works would be Alice Goodman or Peter Pears.
although now looking Pears up on Wikipedia,
I realize that’s not right either. A composer friend of mine had led me to understand Pears had done the libretti for more of Britten’s works. Keep the Alice Goodman comp, though, I’d like to emulate her.
Hmmm.... impressive.
Most impressive. How many have you done?
Also, does it make me a Philistine (no pun intended) if I had to look up both those names on the AOAK?
