Actually I rescind that
if he can be Bucky 2.0 for a month or two and solidify the seventh inning
Weren't we just...
…cussing this guy out less than a week ago? Nice to see people giving Hammel another chance :P
I wasn't cussing him out
I was just concerned, because all the scouting said he was a LOT better than those innings suggested that first outing.
Plus nobody gave him the benefit of the doubt consider a new team, catcher, and park.

If they lose tonite
then they fall into last right? Hopefully they can climb out. I was worried when I saw the schedule that this would happen. If you are a fan you have to worry that the attendance will plummet and force some financial moves. With the Nuggets figuring to go far into the playoffs this year this could hurt attendance through May. The Dodgers are far superior and will likely take the next series.

honestly I wouldn't mind a salary clearout
as I think we have enough good young players to overcome trading Atkins and or Hawpe
Hawpe's been your only consistent player
you cannot ditch everyone. There is already a perception among Rockies Minor League guys that they do their five years and if they are positioned to make money they will be gone. You become the Expos at that point.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Apr 20, 2009 10:04 PM MDT up reply actions
I respect that you have insight into the mind of the players
but the Rockies can’t afford to pay people for past performance
Um, this would be wrong
Intellectual FAILure and, frankly, intellectually dishonest when the club has signed Cook, Hawpe, Tulo to contracts that go well beyond their 5th year of ML service.

I don’t think attendance gets hurt too bad. I don’t think most going to Coors Field really know standings, or quality. It’s more a nice night out in the Colorado summer air.

SS Tulo
3B Stewart
LF Spilly/Murton combo
CF Fowler
RF Gonzales
Trade Atkins for some scrap heap (all he is worth) and make sure Spilborghs is a 280-350 AB guy. He is most effective that way. Helton will get 1-2 starts a week which may precipitate a request for trade or a retirement.

I agree..
but you can’t crap on your franchise hero.
I want that lineup as well, but it’d really be poor to treat Todd Helton like that. He’s handled all the nonsense of this team with a lot of poise.
I mean, he’s getting paid, but that’s not the point.

A pro athlete
needs to play for the front of the jersey, and if the best thing for the teams means you are on the bench, so be it. If he chooses whether or not to retire, that’s up to him, but a pro athlete needs to realize what is best for the TEAM, if he chooses not to retire.

Fielding or hitting
cause he’s looking very special in baserunning…which this team lacks
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
either way
he’s batting .321, which pleases me, but he’s not walking (which is one of his strengths), and he’s stolen 5 bags as well, but I haven’t heard anything about him being a passable fielder.
Pros: Good average, good speed
Cons: Isn’t walking (it’s early yet), don’t think he can field still

I haven't seen him
but I’ll take a guy that can move (assume range) will get to balls and make up for fielding….it’s 2nd base…not a hard position to play
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
I can't back up disagreeing
but I don’t think speed translates into good infield range, because it’s more of a reaction thing and not as much of a “just flat out fast” kind of thing

I think they need to look at the hitting and game situation approaches in the Minors. As well as the pitching command issues of young arms. Heck when I played you got fined for not moving a runner over in scoring position with less than two outs.

you mention the minors
and this is increasingly on my radar with the Rockies. They don’t develop pitchers well enough, or in good enough numbers to feed the major league club.
I also don’t think the Rockies do a very good job of reading talent, and developing. Just the numbers that they lost to other teams this year off of AA, and A ball tells me that other teams see the talent..and know what to do with it. The Rockies…just let it flounder and hope it muddles to the top.
This to me is coaching..not just on guy…but organizationally deficient coaching.
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
well here's the thing
if we’re letting this talent go, aren’t the people who we keep arguably better than the players we let go?
I’m going to miss Koshansky, but it wasn’t happening. Morillo may have gas, but he’s wild as sin and he’s going to prove to be very hittable, what with no movement on that fastball of his.
Hammel will turn out to be a good trade, as Rodriguez is 2 years out still, at least.
We’re starting our top prospect, the 13th best prospect in baseball, and the Machine will be along sooner than we know it. Brandon Hynick’s playing in our backyard right as we speak.
I guess I don’t know what talent we’re not good at acquiring, because in my admittedly flawed opinion (our farm has never really been my forte), it looks like we’re doing great.

Good points
see my note on rushing pitching below. The Rays have pitching already and will not need to rush anybody (Rodriquez). When he arrives he will be seasoned and ready.
The main theme here is that the organization is so thin on the top end that they have to rush and place unfinished products.
The other issue is the draft and the Rockies settling for ranged salary spots. You have Reynolds and not Lincicome, Francis and not Kazmir, etc.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Apr 20, 2009 11:22 PM MDT up reply actions
agreed
3 points.
1. It’s “Lincecum” – and amusingly enough, this isn’t intended to be OMG SPELLZING" but rather “Oh God, please don’t let us confuse Tim Lincecum and Bernie Lincicome” – I laughed more than shook my fist.
2. I completely agree on the whole “rodriguez arriving seasoned”, but how much of that is our fault? The past several years, the Rockies may not have seemed overly competitive, but at least we weren’t the Devil Rays, right? The Rays shut our mouths on that, because they’d been able to stockpile all kinds of young arms, and with no expectations, they didn’t care if they were throwing guys like Mark Hendrickson or Tanyon Sturtze because who cared? They wanted to put a competitive team on the field, but just couldn’t. Tampa lost for a lot of years to get to the point where their farm could actually be completely sustaining. I don’t want to lose for another 6 years before we can compete again.
3. The Rockies should’ve picked Longoria. I don’t care if it was a redundant pick, you take the best talent available. I still stand by NOT taking Lincecum, as his arm is just gonna sever one day and hit Buster Posey in the head.

You want specific names of players? I’m talking in generalities. I saw Morrillo pitch the other day for the Twins, looked dominating. Hit 98 on the gun. Far more then Speier ever can or will….given away for nothing.
Tavares, the Reds think will be 100 stolen base guy, and MLB network, Barry Larkin, thought he was a key piece in the Reds seasons…given away (not a minor league issue…it’s an organizational issue)
Reynolds, drafted #1 will never be a major league player (talent evaluation)
Hirsch will be wasted away and through his options (yeah that injury last year was very bad), but it’s a waste of a pitcher that was in the Astros organization the AA pitcher of the year, and the AAA pitcher of the year…but the Rockies cant get him to the bigs?
But my Biggest: Cabrera was rule 5 drafted out of A ball. They think he could be as good as Rafael Furcal. But the Rockies can’t seem to think he’s as valuable as Koshansky (who was on the 40 man), that they ended up giving away too!
These are just some examples, I was talking generalities…..yeah the Rockies have produced some prospects, but how many of them have actually turned the team around in the last 3 years and became stars? Only one and for 1/2 a year in 07…and I think he’s the most over-rated player in all of baseball. and I don’t think it’s all his fault…his stance is terrible, and no one has the balls to get him to fix it.
And bottom line example, of where I’m at on the Rockies. I believe, If Tulowitzki was traded tomorrow to a team with good organizational coaches, l think he could become everything he’s suppose to be, as he’s still young. But with the Rockies, and it’s coaching staff (again, not just the big league guys I’m talking about) he’ll never be any more than Khalili Greene. The Rockies players…never get through the “growing pains” stages of young players.
You want examples of clubs that do produce talent, look at the Marlins, the Rays, the Twins, and even the Orioles (now that their hitters are arriving).
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
Can't argue a single point here
I have been saying this for four years and as a result I am labeled a malcontent and ridculed by some. But I played this game and coached this game and scouted professionally for four years (Cleveland late 80’s). The organization seems to draft prototypes based on signability. You take away the Latin American guy running the academy down there (fine job no less) and how many big league pitchers has this organization produced in the last five years?

I know
that sometimes your comments are harsh, but I really think you are calling the Kettle Black. Some times the glass is 1/2 full…and that’s ok…some times it’s empty..and calling it 1/2 full is wishfull thinking and it needs to be called what it is
I’m having a hard time, with the ‘stay with it, one day they will be good’ and don’t we love this lovable losers approach.
This year looks to be 90 losses….next year will be too, and so on…the organization needs to be cleaned out, and until that happens…nothing will change for the Colorado Rockies
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
Why are we faulting the organization for relying on Latin pitchers?
The DR makes excellent pitchers. And they’re far less expensive than the USA talent which tends to sign with Scott Boras. When teams can just pay whatever and just buck the slot entirely, how are teams that can’t drop $$$$$$$$$ on prospects supposed to keep up? Latin America, that’s how.

The only thing here I disagree with
is Taveras. Yes he is speedy and can still 100 if he hits over 300. The issue for me with him is a. you cannot steal first base b. he simply cannot hit anything offspeed c. he is overpowered by hard throwers. His defense is good, not great and he had major issues going back on balls especially to his right.

is he was given away..and he had value….the Rockies, and this time O’Dowd couldn’t get anything for that value.

Well, without specific names, it's hard to have a discussion about it
I mentioned Morillo already. 98MPH is great, but when you can’t control it OR your breaking stuff, and the fastball is a straightball, it’s gonna be lunch meat. Just wait, Jim Thome will break his gentle spirit.
Taveras needs to get on base before he can steal bags. We thought he’d steal 100 as well. And then he had an OBP of like .301. We TRIED to trade him for Tim Redding, remember? The Nats balked. Redding’s worth about nothing as well.
I think Reynolds was hoped to be akin to Jeff Francis from the right side. I touched on this above.
Hirsh isn’t anyone’s fault. He was struggling 1st half 2007, and then started really throwing his fastball 2nd half, and was looking good…until he took a liner in the leg. Then Spring ‘08 his shoulder exploded. Now he’s lost his timing and groove. How is that our fault? Do you fault the Padres for Mark Prior not winning Cy Youngs now?
I can see the frustration with Cabrera. His last season in A ball looked like the kind of season you’d want out of a leadoff hitter. This season doesn’t have enough ABs to really make any case either way, but he’s looking decent…except that he’s out 6-8 weeks with a broken wrist. If we had put Cabrera on the 40-man, the cry would’ve been “Why are we wasting a roster spot when we could be putting Matt Belisle or Dan Ortmeier on the 40 man?!”, and now that we’ve lost him to the Rule 5, we’re all complaining that we didn’t keep him. It’s kind of a catch-22, and it’s a shame, really. Koshansky was a mistake we made LAST season, not this season. We should’ve traded him LAST season, as someone might’ve wanted him then. Had we moved Koshansky in 2008, Cabrera might’ve had a roster spot. I can’t argue with the mishandling of Koshansky.
Number of prospects we’ve had that have made a difference?
Let’s see. Todd Helton, Matt Holliday, Brad Hawpe, Seth Smith, Troy Tulowtizki, Ian Stewart, Chris Iannetta, Clint Barmes, Ubaldo Jimenez, Aaron Cook, Franklin Morales, Manny Corpas, to name a few. You seem to think that “making a difference” means “Winning the MVP”. This team of PROSPECTS won the 2007 NL Pennant. How many other teams have MULTIPLE prospects doing that? The Phillies, and that’s really about it. And we could argue circles about that one.
The Rockies had a 2007 much akin to the Rays’ 2008. The Rays had the far better season, no question, but the Rockies also won the pennant, and had major award candidates in the same season. The Rays had a much better team though, thanks to losing so much and being a joke the past 10 years. They have been pitching Shields and Kazmir the past several years, and have David Price in the wings. We have been pitching Cook and Francis(and you can substitute Jimenez in there too) and we have Morales and Chacin in the wings.
There are phases of a homegrown team’s development. Right now we’re in the “trade off the old guys and bring up more young’ns” which gives more momentum to PHLP’s ‘Trade-or-bench Helton’ campaign (which has merit, it just makes me sad). A lot of the success of organizations has to do with the timing of when the young’ns show up, and when their relief shows up. Ideally, you have a steady stream of guys peaking/getting expensive and then their replacements being ready to go around the same time. See: Atkins, Stewart; Hawpe, Gonzalez (although Hawpe is cheaply signed and can be played at 1B).
I think you’re being too hard on a slow start. Tulo may not have looked great the past couple games, but where was this talk during the opening season against Arizona? This slump is about as statistically significant as that tear was. Slumps happen, and they suck even harder when the entire team is in one.
I’m not sure what magical coaches you’re thinking of (aside from the coach PHLP brought up), but you’re judging a new staff pretty harshly pretty early in the season. Hurdle has a track record, and I do think it’s time for a change.
The Marlins go through like 2 year phases: 2 years of sucking butt, 2 years of slow improvement, 2 years of relative success. Lather, rinse, repeat. They got HanRam for trading Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, so it’s not like their crafty eyes spotted HanRam in the DR. They are making suckers out of a lot of teams who trade for guys like Mike Jacobs. There is no ownership loyalty to any of the players, and it’s really sad to see. Hanley wants out. He claims to be kidding, but he wants out. Uggla could be next, along with Hermida and Ross, depending on where they are in their contract years.
The O’s look a lot like us, they have young awesome talent in the majors. They also have no pitching. They also play in a park that is very similar to Coors Field. They also play in a monster division, so we don’t have many excuses.
We’re in a tricky spot. If we trade off Hawpe, Atkins, Helton, Cook, we might win 70 games this season if absurdly lucky. We’d replenish the farm, more than likely, but in the doing, we piss off every casual Rockies fan in Denver. If we keep all these guys, we’re old and not doing enough to foster young talent. O’Dowd can’t win in this market.
(PS I agree with you on Holliday being overrated – just not as overrated as Rollins :-P )

Hit the nail on the head
There is a guy I know (former Rockie) who is not employed by the team but meantioned that there is sort of an old boys club approach to the ML system coaching (pitching hitting etc)
To me there was some obvious failures here. Carney Lansford should have been the big club hitting coach post 2007. Left for San Fran and Cockrell stayed on and was fired. Carney cleaned up Barmes and Ianetta after horrid Major stints. Also how many hot Rockie pitching prospects pitch any length of stay in AAA before being summoned, Jimenex, Morales, Rekar, Burke, and the list goes on.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Apr 20, 2009 11:18 PM MDT up reply actions
AAA pitching..not sure I’d leave them in Colorado Springs too long either..unless the Rockies buy a humidor for down there. Sure, it’s about $300k but how much is a pitcher worth….seems to be small amount to pay.
Personally I think the Rockies need to be cleaned out top to bottom. There is a reason, they finish in the lower half of the division all the time and why you can count the number of times it’s been to the playoff on 2 fingers….winning records don’t take too many more fingers.
Doing the same old, same old, with the same players…will get the same result
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
I agree
I think though they may have lost their window though. There are two very rich clubs in their division (LA/SF) who have suffered through about 4-5 years of stupid investments and are starting to right their ship. LA brought on 3 really solid role players this year (Ausmus, Hudson, Loretta) at good value. They are weeining themselves from the debacles of Pierre, Schmidt, Gagne, Nomar, etc) and are doing it right. Playing their minor league guys and filling holes with quality proven ML talent. Giants same thing to a lesser degree. The economy, the Bonds fiasco, and sensibility has prevailed.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Apr 20, 2009 11:50 PM MDT reply actions
and don't forget the Padres
they have some young talent, and more on the way. They cut their losses on Khalili Greene and a few others…and are rebuilding
Arizona is in the same boat that the Rockies are…..convinced that they are so close, and it’s not true…the talent just isn’t there, and they don’t have the money to fix it..just like the Rockies
Dodgers are starting to look like the Red Sox to me….good money to pay for missing pieces, and producing good solid major league talent on their own.
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
There is a reason they have been a storied franchise
the Dodgers now see that the O’malley way was right. It took a coupleof ownership changes and bad investments but they figured it out. Look at the 50,60,70, 80 and into the early 90s. They were a perennial playoff club. I think they are poised to do that again. The weekend showed how far this club is from a talent, pitching and execution standpoint.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Apr 21, 2009 12:00 AM MDT up reply actions
I think the new group
has the new formula down…which is develop as much talent especially pitching..than fill in with QUALITY (and not always cheap) free agents like Rameriz and Hudson.
The Dodgers looked at Blake DeWitt, and saw that Orlando Hudson would improve the team…the Rockeis stuck with Clint Barmes
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
Yeah and they packaged the LaRoche
kid to Pittsburgh to get Manny. Picked Casey Blake in Cleveland’s mid summer bake sale. They were not far from being NL champs last year. If I had to pick an NL team right now for the WS it would be them. They have solid pitching top to bottom, solid bench, a formidable lineup, they defend better than Dodger teams have in the past and they execute TEAM ball.

I agree with the "WHY ON EARTH DIDN'T YOU SIGN HUDSON" sentiment
because WHY ON EARTH DIDN’T THEY SIGN ORLANDO HUDSON
Blake Dewitt is young, and has a lot of potential upside still, but our problem is we have like 3 Blake Dewitt’s. Our bench is very strong, but that’s because we have a merry-go-round of starting players, at least 2 of which need to be traded.
How bad do you think the fallout would be if we traded Spilborghs?

Who gives a fling F' about Ryan Spilborghs?
He’s a marginal bench warming type talent. Just like Barmes, and a list of other players on this team.
This team and some fans are too married to marginal talent. They see performance, where it’s not, They see numbers cause some one looked into a crystal ball, and saw it in the future, and thus it must be true.
"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009
Now this is where we significantly differ
I really don’t know where you get this from. He plays right around average OF defense, and he has a good eye, and swings a good bat. His offensive production has gotten better every year he’s played, and last season he was one of our best batters. Add the fact that he’s a fan favorite, and that’s why I asked such a question.
Are you serious? How can you call Spilborghs a “marginal bench warming type talent” when he’s produced so well the past 2 seasons? Are you crazy? Comparing him to Barmes? What on EARTH are you backing this up with?

My final diatribe
the 2007 three weeks of glory could have some serious long term effects. The run gave some people (Hurdle, Apodaca, O’Dowd) a coat of safety. The issue at that time was, Is this club good or good for only that stretch of time? Well there have been 174 games played since then and the team in 78-96. Will they hold unto to that legacy too long so that it becomes an albatross?

Was heckling the Rockies in person.
Fun game to be at. (For a Dbacks fan)
I called Reynolds’ homer, and when Stewart came up to the plate in the top of the 1st, I leaned over to Jim and said, “I wouldn’t mind it too terribly much if he hit a home run in this game and helped out my fantasy team. So long as it’s only one.”
