Help getting thru the offday, 4/23 edition
Another offday is upon us, and the latest installment Help Getting Through the Day is here to help fill the void.
One of my favorite (albeit ancillary) things about going to a baseball game is getting to hear the walkup music for each player. Ryan Spilborghs has had some great choices in the recent past with Sweet Escape and Thriller, though I'm not crazy about his current selection. Other players have had poor selections, and some are just ridiculous.
So, Rowbots, the obvious question to ask is which player has walkup music that you love/hate. But what about you? What would your song be if you played for the Rockies?
I would pick Red Alert by Basement Jaxx. It's not my favorite song in the whole world, but it has a great beat and it starts off with a lot of energy, which hopefully would pump up the crowd at Coors Field.
So what's it gonna be? If you have some obscure selection, it might help to link to a YouTube video featuring the song. Sound off!
Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

Easy for me
If I was a player it would probably be Livin on a Prayer… can you imagine coming up in the bottom of the ninth with your team down by a few, and your the go ahead run at the plate and Livin on a Prayer blast through the speakers?
Always happy to sound off on music...
I’ve never tried a post with links before, so forgive me if they don’t come across right…
Some of my favorites are:
Yorvit Torrealba, circa 2007. Salio el Sol, by Don Omar. Yorvit’s always pretty good at picking bouncy reggaeton music.
Brian Fuentes, 2007-2008 (sniff, tear). For You, by Staind. I never thought too much of the song on the radio, but it really grew on me. It began to always stop me midsentence when those opening chords started at the top of the ninth— you knew Tito was coming in and there was NO WAY anyone could beat us!
Old school: Dante Bichette, 1993—-(did he EVER change it?). Sledgehammer, by Peter Gabriel. What a great attention-getter! I recall specifically a day when he had been injured for a while (don’t remember the year)… he came in off the bench towards the end of the game. That music combined with Alan Roach’s booming “DANT-ayyyyyyyy Bichette” made the crowd go wild!
As for the Tulo situation:
I know that supposedly he chose 2007’s song (I’m a Flirt, R Kelly) himself, or at least he really liked it…. reports have him singing it in the clubhouse when it would come on the radio.
Not sure about the Gimme More choice… maybe referring to his desire for more playing time in 2008? :)
As far as this year— Roll With Me (Montgomery Gentry). Tulo’s never chosen country before… and if you listen to the lyrics, it seems to reflect the much-publicized “kinder, gentler” Tulo persona touted this year.
[Lyrics below, my interpretation in brackets— tongue firmly in cheek with nothing but love for our boys]:
So now I’m slowing it down [not being so aggressive at the plate] and I’m looking around [and trying to lay off the high fastballs- check out my three BB’s in one game]
And I’m lovin’ this town [at least if you listen to my commercials] and I’m doing alright [-ish, when compared to our team’s current slumpy batting average]
Aint’ worried ‘bout nothing except for the man I wanna be [so stop asking me, Troy Renck!]
I’m thinking maybe it’s time to be livin’ the rhyme
When I’m singing a song about nothing but right
And it’d sure be nice if you would roll with me [and not trash me on the DP comment threads]
Fun thread!

Of course, I’m going to have to think about this for a while. In the interim, does anybody know which songs the Rockies hitters were using during the first home series this year? I’d like to update the hitting music for my players on MLB 09: The Show.

Renegade by STYX
The Steelers have used it in their pregame intro before, and I thought it was pretty exciting. At Coors it might have to start a bit later to get in the big yell though.
OK, here's my pick
“Welcome Home,” Coheed and Cambria. Whether I’m coming up with the bases loaded, or coming out of the bullpen to try and preserve a one-run lead, Coors Field will crumble under the sheer force of this song coming out of the speakers.
Unless I wanted to go with a more hip-hop bent – in which case, “Shook Ones Part 2” by Mobb Deep is the choice.
Unless I wanted to go the Byrnes/Spilborghs route – in which case, “The Stroke” by Billy Squier for hitting music, “Here Comes Your Man” by The Pixies for coming out of the pen.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
The Shawn Chacon Experience - Life as a Rockies fan, one day at a time: Because we're all still recovering from those nine blown saves.
I would pick the Pixies for hitting
Since you would only get at most 10 seconds of the song, I would go with :15 to : 25 of Wave of Mutilation.
If they gave unlimited time, and didn’t mind me waiting 5 minutes before going up, I would probably go with TV on the Radio’s Wolf Like Me.

Hey
I don’t know Mute Math, but they’re going to be at this festival that I’m probably going to. So you like them? Do you know if they’re good live?
Do yourself a favor and make sure you see them
They are the best live band I have ever seen live…in fact, their show is what got them their following. I haven’t checked in our their new EP yet, but I’m sure they’ll play a lot of their classic material. Anberlin is also great. That’s an awesome festival…I would have a hard time leaving the Festival Stage, frankly. I’m jealous

by Andrew T. Fisher on Apr 23, 2009 1:15 PM MDT up reply actions
Luckily the Festival Stage
is during the day and the Main Stage is at night. So there are no conflicts there. The only conflicts are between the local stage, the subsonic tent, and the festival stage. This will be the 3rd year I’ve gone, and I always stick at the festival stage, since I’ve rarely heard of anyone at the other two (and the subsonic tent tends to be electronic/rave music).
Anyway, thanks for the scoop. I’ll definitely make sure we catch them. I know Anberlin, so I’m looking forward to them and some of the others (Alkaline Trio and Airborne Toxic Event have both been there in the past, so I know they’re good).
Speaking of Anberlin
Godspeed has some great high energy riffs…Beg to 0:16 or 1:58 to 2:20

Also
I’ve discovered new bands a few times at this festival that I end up loving (Shiny Toy Guns is one from a couple years ago), so I’m totally cool with bands I don’t know. But it’s great to go in with some advanced knowledge.
Shiny Toy Guns
was great at that in 2007. As was the Faint – if you like them.

I think I may have missed the Faint.
I’m not sure, but I think they were last over at the festival stage and we headed over to the main stage early. I’m not really familiar with them.
But yeah, that was the first I’d ever heard of Shiny Toy Guns, and that show made me a fan.
Anberlin is amazing.
An all-time favorite band of mine. Awesome to see them getting some love.

-Glendon Rusch
And now
I just realized you know what you are getting in to…idiot….
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
Heh
And yep, I went in 2007 & 2008. 2007 was the better lineup, so you picked a good year to go. Plus last year they ditched the main stage and left us standing at the festival stage for 9 hours. Luckily they got the hint that no one liked that, so the main stage will be back this year.
I agree
I went to their concert in Boulder about two years ago. It was awesome they are great showmen.
First thing that comes to mind for me
Is “Surfin’ Bird” by The Trashmen. “Ah well ah everybody’s heard about the bird, bird bird bird, bird is the word” etc. etc. It would help if I had the word “bird” in my baseball nickname.
How about “I’m Waiting for the Man” by the Velvet Underground? Not only a great song, but factually correct! Apart from all the stuff about drug dealing. That is [b]slander[/b], sir, and I’ll have you not repeat it.
"Surfin' Bird"
I actually had a teammate in high school playing Legion C who used that song as his hitting music – he had really skinny legs so we all called him ‘Bird’.

I would have to do a lot of research to make a decision
But just scanning through my playlist, there are a couple Queens of the Stone Age (who are great live, by the way) tracks that could work. Both Sick, Sick, Sick and No One Knows both have pretty great openings.
The beginning of Anberlin’s Feel Good Drag is also pretty great.
We should be friends
Queens of the Stone Age is my favorite band, ever, with no close second. I could have gone with so many different Queens tunes – “Avon” would be great, “How To Handle A Rope”, “18 AD”, “The Sky Is Falling”… I’d better stop.
And I wish the Rockies would set their pregame highlight video to “Spiders and Vinegaroons” but that’s probably just me.

Paralyzer
Strangely (and embarrassingly) enough, I first heard that song when they performed it during the swimsuit competition of the Miss USA pageant last year. It works surprisingly way as a runway song. So now anytime it comes up on my iPod while I’m walking, I find myself subconsciously strutting.
I'd use Down With the Sickness by Disturbed
Especially coming out of the pen. Regardless, I’d start with the big yell 30 seconds in.
The 2009 Colorado Rockies: Expect the Unexpected
I was going to say that as another possibility...
though the first 30 seconds are a fantastic lead-in as the manager takes out the out pitcher…then as the scream happens, the pitcher emerges out of the bullpen.

2 Questions for you
Off topic.
Are you going to do the DP farm report this year?
I’m going to the Barons/Suns game tonight. Anyone to keep an eye on besides Beckham and Viciedo? And Nix, of course.
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."

I don't think the DP will be asking me...
for much of anything. I’ve probably burnt far too many bridges there.
As for your game tonight, it’s a good pitching matchup Poreda and Thompson are two solid young starters. For the Barons also look for catcher Tyler Flowers if he plays. I’d say that Logan Morrison is the only position player for the Suns that I’d be particularly interested in from a prospect watching perspective. I just noticed that’s where former Rockies minor league catcher Neil Wilson wound up, he’s not much of a prospect, but I always root for guys we drafted.
Poreda had a shot at the MLB rotation in ST, didn't he?

I’ve heard it at Coors Field a few times, usually when the bases are loaded. The jumbotron cuts to black and white and zooms in on the batter. It always gets the crowd rocking.
One time I was at a game and in the late innings, the opposing team brought in a new reliever to face Matt Holliday. While the chump was warming up, they played a bunch of Holliday highlights on the jumbotron while playing Holiday by Green Day. If I go for hip hop, I’m picking Never Scared by Bone Crusher, maybe the very beginning of the remix.

If I'm going hip-hop
I’m picking the intro to Lose Yourself by Eminem
The 2009 Colorado Rockies: Expect the Unexpected
Intro to Let It Rock by Kevin Rudolf
But I’d rather go heavy metal.
"Besides, this is freaking 2009.... WHERE THE HELL IS MY DAMNED FLYING CAR??"
Or else
The Way I Are by Timbaland…. “State Of Emergency”
"Besides, this is freaking 2009.... WHERE THE HELL IS MY DAMNED FLYING CAR??"
Fantastic topic
I wish I had actually been around for more of the discussion. So many great songs and bands have been thrown around that I wish I had come in a bit earlier.
Anyway, my list of walkup songs:
“No Regrets” – Authority Zero
“The Reaper” – Witchery
“Tom Sawyer” – Rush
“Around the World” – Red Hot Chili Peppers
And no list of mine would be complete without it… “Thunderstruck” – AC/DC
My closer song without ripping off Trevor Hoffman:
“War Zone” – Slayer
Tom Sawyer
The beginning would be perfect. Excellent choice.

Another idea
Use a song written by a Rockies fan. There are some candidates here by Hollidayrain (note the Rockies fanship proudly displayed in the name). Final Hours could do well, or parts of Dangerous Fumes.

Fav song:
Ironman by Ozzy Osbourne — Mark Reynolds
My song would be Barroom Hero by Dropkick Murphys

Psst... your Red Sox roots are showing again.
You might want to go back to the salon to touch those up.
I resent that.
Although, to be honest, even though I rooted for you guys during the 2007 WS, I watched part of the Red Sox victory parade just to see Dropkick.

You watched the Red Sox victory parade?
Now I’m on Russ’ side, you should get banned just for that!
Ef you baldo try Hair-Be Dere!!
Awww, c'mon.
I have to build up another long list of grievances before I get banned again.
I only watched the part where Dropkick was performing.

How about their Warrior's Code?
"If we never try, we shall never succeed." - Abraham Lincoln
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
And
awesome band.
Best song on the album is The Auld Triangle, IMO. (Yeah, I’m a sucker for the folk songs)

I'll admit it
I have the entire Dropkick discography and generally like most of their music. Some of their songs, like “For Boston” are easily skipped, but otherwise I’m a fan.

I think
Flogging Molly is more talented and more diverse musically, but Dropkick is probably my second fav — or at least in my top five.
FM is my favorite, though.

Ugh
Am not a Flogging Molly fan. No, I don’t know how that works. I’ve just never gotten into them.

I'm sort of iffy on them
but I saw them at a festival last year and they were pretty great. Didn’t necessarily make me want to go out and get more of their music, but they were definitely entertaining (especially since a couple of the other groups there were a bit of a let down).
Live music is totally different
and in general, I’m not a very big fan of it because a lot of artists I like have trouble re-producing the sound I enjoy.
That said, my favorite live performance was by Nine Inch Nails, a band I don’t even really like that much. They just put on such a great show (in the Pepsi Center, of all places) that it stuck with me as a better experience than seeing some other bands that I like much more.

Live music
is the last great American art form, well, so says Rocco DeLuca. If you ever get the chance to attend a Rocco DeLuca & the Burden performance, go. Amazing, and you just might get to meet Kiefer Sutherland, like I did.

Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I only recently started going to concerts
and I think I’ve been lucky. I haven’t been really disappointed by anyone that I previously loved (in fact, all the bands I’ve seen that I was super excited about ended up being great). I’ve had some that failed to meet my expectations, but most of those were just bands that I though would be good live, even though they weren’t my favorites. But I’ve also had some pleasant surprises (example—I wasn’t really a fan of The Killers, but after seeing them live, I became a bigger fan).
I had the opposite experience with the Killers
I was a pretty big fan to start with, but their 50 minute headlining Red Rocks show just didn’t live up to it…expectations I gues

Heh
That may very well be. I had no expectations, and they exceeded them. You had really high ones, and they fell short. Funny how that works. And of course, it’s entirely possible that they had a good show when I saw them, but not as good when you did.
Oh
and I saw Anberlin last November. They put on a great, great show. I hope if you see them you have the same experience.

I wasn't much of a Killers fan
But got to see them play to 300 competition winners in London last autumn and they were pretty excellent. But overall I don’t really go to gigs any more, despite managing about 2 a week from the ages of 16-21. Seems a shame really but if I don’t enjoy it, what’s the point?
I am an old man :(
I think I’m also turned off by exaggerated vanity. Killed the Goo Goo Dolls for me too.

That's the problem with the Killers, unfortunately
Their shows are far too short. Most nights they average 80-90 minutes.

Killers
When I saw them they were part of a larger show (including Death Cab, Franz Ferdinand, Jack’s Mannequin, and Bloc Party), so they weren’t planned to be as long as if they were the sole headliners. It worked well for me, actually, as someone who wasn’t a huge fan, since that meant I ended up knowing almost all the songs they did.
Wow...I would have loved that show
I was a huge Andrew McMahon very early in his career. I’ve seen Death Cab at Red Rocks as well BP and FF would be great on the side.

It was Night So Silent Night
which is put on every December by the same radio station that does the BFD show I mentioned earlier.
We have one of those
It led to the near death of my Snow Patrol fanhood. That BFD show really seems like a good one

Yeah
I was pretty indifferent towards Queens of the Stone Age until I saw them open for NIN. After that, I haven’t been able to listen to them. They were awful. Everything about them was absoutely painful for me. The sound, the crowd, the atmosphere, it all just really sucked.
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! HOW can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
Huh
I had the opposite experience with Queens of the Stone Age, though I was also indifferent to them. Maybe I just have low expectations in general, I don’t know.
I had zero expectations
and with little to no live show experience at that time, it was a massive failget of a first major concert. Then NIN took the stage and blew my doors off. * shrugs *

Not sure of a personal song choice,
but my vote for absolutely-most-awesomely-awesome walk-up music was a few years back. The Rockies were trailing in the bottom of the 8th or 9th, but had two men on and Larry Walker was up to bat. Instead of Crazy Train, the Star Wars theme blasted over the loudspeakers. And Larry obliged by driving the ball into the bleachers. To this date, I’ve never seen Coors go any crazier (in person).
