Thursday Pebble Report: Colorado (Springs) roughs up Arizona (AAA affiliate)
AAA Colorado Springs, W 16-8 - (9-4)
Jason Hirsh allowed five runs on four hits...in the first inning alone...but the Sky Sox offense exploded for a homerless barage of 16 runs on 20 hits against the Reno Aces (D'Backs) to give Hirsh the win. Hirsh allowed no runs on just two hits in his final five innings.
Matt Murton (.434/.500/.679) extended his hitting streak to seven games (all of them sans one a multi-hit game) and even swiped a bag, and Carlos Gonzalez (.269/.381/.481) quietly recorded 6 RBI's, including a double and triple. Every starter including Hirsh earned a base knock. Box Score
The Sky Sox play Reno in the second of four today at 2:05 MDT.

So, tell me again
why Murton’s not with the big club?
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.

You are forgetting that those are non-humidor inflated numbers
If he were hitting at coors, those numbers would be more like .224, 0 HR, 2 RBI
Listen, this signature line is a big part of who I am.

power hitters...
wow—I just scrolled through the box scores of the Rockies and realized how few power-hitting prospects there are in the system. It looks like there may be nobody currently in the minors who hit more than 20 HRs last year—I know that it usually doesn’t make sense to draft for need, but I think the Rockies need to address this in the draft this year.

They really don't now that JoKo is gone
but I still like Garner, McKenry, and Nelson to show some power. They added Harvey as well this year and he may add some pop, but I think you’re right. We are lacking some pop. I would like to see what Roling is going to do this year, he might be someone to watch.
Would Dominguez have been a guy that would have added power to the system had we been able to sign him? Does anyone know about him in that regard, and also what are the thoughts about power potential when it comes to Gomez?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Dominguez projects to very good power
But he’s not having the monster year I think he was banking (literally) on this year. Still a guy worth watching on draft day as a first-day selection.
As far as the draft goes, I like Rich Poythress a lot as far as a power bat that should be there for us in the first round. Dominguez might be worth a redraft in the second or third round.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

The Rockies have been going away from power with college hitters
In recent drafts, going more for line drive types, and their signed HS draft picks which project power, as well as a few Latin signs haven’t been developing it. I don’t believe this is a complete scouting failure, as you look at what guys that didn’t sign like Kentrail Davis have done in college, but it hasn’t been happening in the system. I think Massey’s a big test for the system at developing power, I think Julian Yan will be a big test for the system. Yes it would be great if somebody like Garner could develop into a late bloomer as well. Charlie Blackmon’s supposed to have at least some power as a hitter, but we haven’t seen any from him thus far either, and that’s disappointing to me.

Whatever happened w/ Kentrail Davis anyways?

The Rockies made a strong offer
I haven’t heard specifically what it was, but it was enough to put some serious doubt into whether he would go to college or not. In the end he did, which turned out to be the wise choice as he had a huge freshman season with Tennessee and is considered a first round talent as a draft eligible sophomore this season. Because he holds so much leverage, he’ll either wind up with a large market team and pretty paycheck this summer or go back to school to try and become one of the top two or three players available in 2010.

That's a shame we missed out on that signing, the rich get richer in this case

I just went out and read some articles on Davis
I shouldn’t have done that. It depressed me even more that we couldn’t sign him. He is being talked about as a LH Kirby Puckett. Oh well, just hope he gets drafted by an AL team if its not us.

Is there anything worth knowing about Mike McCoy?
Because he’s also shredding the ball.
