Game #16: James McDonald vs. Ubaldo Jimenez
I'm sick of this whole losing thing. It's about time for a win. Tonight's pitching matchup favors the Rockies...I think.
James McDonald failed to qualify for the win against us Sunday despite allowing no runs. He has been a victim of wildness so far, and he was being tailored as a relief pitcher until the last couple weeks of spring. Patience will help out tonight - luckily that's one strangth of the offense. He'll be facing a lineup that is missing Ian Stewart, Ryan Spilborghs and Chris Iannetta.
Ubaldo Jimenez has suffered from control problems in his last two starts, first due to cold, and second due to mechanical problems. It should be warm enough tonight, and the mechanical glitch is suppsedly fixed, so hopefully we'll see a better Hair-B-There tonight. He is 4-1 in his career vs LA, but that is with a 6.57 ERA. Orlando Hudson, Casey Blake, Matt Kemp, Russell Martin and Rafael Furcal all have at least a .333 career average against Jimenez.
Here's to hoping this doesn't happen anymore tonight. Unless it is regarding the Broncos draft.

Confused about that too
Guy finally starts hitting, then gets whisked out of the lineup by Hurdle’s incessant effing tinkering.

Yeah, so
the Broncos are having one of the most questionable drafts in history, what was that Rox Girl was saying about finishers (4 runs all with 2 outs) and we go 1-2-3 again.

I have discovered that casual fans trust McDaniels more than O’Dowd. Funny thing is, one exec has proven nothing for his team while the other has made some solid trades and signings…and has a league championship. Proof that the Rox will always be the Donkeys’ red-headed step-child

Why is that we always give up tons of runs in the first inning
yet afterwords we keep the other team to no points for a while.
Maybe it's the other team letting up,
They just relax after taking a lead knowing that if they have to, they can get runs off of our pitching anytime they want. See last night, for instance.

I think the big issue with that is the lineup decisions that led to a two out, nobody on situation in the first place.
If your 7-8 hitters are Stewart and CDI, would that have changed things? The way McDonald pitched the third, I think it might have.
Thank you Apodaca for helping Cook and Jimenez
fix their “hitches” in their deliveries
Two words
These words won’t satisfy any analytical or sabermetric baseball persons’ needs but sometimes simple is easy. We suck! Watching this team is equivalent to stabbing yourself in the eyeball with a screwdriver. Starting pitching is terrible, lineup is terrible, bullpen… oh my god. Where is the hope? Where is the buzz? I don’t see it anywhere.
Definitely can't blame anyone for thinking that right now
This team needs to show a lot better than it is, or… we’ll start being afraid that that’s what it is.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
the upside
of this is that sometimes its more fun to have absoltely no expectations. The highs are higher and the lows aren’t as bad.
sometimes simple is easy.
I certainly can’t argue with that part. And the part about watching Rockies = eyeball screwdriver stabbing. The rest? Not so much.
This is the first time I have had this thought
but this team needs to be dismantled soon. I have been one of Hurdle’s biggest supporters, and until now I have not blamed him, but the way this team is playing, what else can we do, unless this is just a no talent team, and I’m not sure I believe that.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
the question is now legit:
how long will they give Hurdle to fix this? Mid May?
I'd say thats about right
but honestly I would force him to fire Dac first. I would see how it goes for awhile after that.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I've never been a Hurdle fan
but I’m not a hater either, and I’m not sure what he can do here. The pitching is simply awful from front to back, and I agree that Apodaca needs to go. I think it would be ok if they fired him after this game. But its not Hurdle’s fault that the staff wasn’t good enough to begin with, and his two “good” pitchers are off to awful starts.
There is a legitimate debate about his use of the bench/lineups, and that falls largely on him. I am hopeful that since he’s officially managing for his job, he’ll come up with something.
Look, right now we have seen the Rockies suck, really suck against one team.
Of course it’s a team we play for a full 1/8 of our schedule this season, but still, there are fourteen other NL teams, and the other three we’ve played the team has actually looked at least a bit decent against. Last season we saw what really sucking against one divisional foe all season (the D-backs) could do to the overall record, but it’s not inevitable that the team will look like this against the Dodgers all season. If we blow chunks against San Diego and our other upcoming series, then we know we’re in serious trouble, right now, we can still be in a wait and see mode.
we all get frustrated, mate

It's going to take a lot more than one three hit night for him to show that,
but it certainly would be nice if it’s true. Paint me skeptical right now, let’s see what he does from here.
I agree, but I was adding that to his last 4-5 games
and he is 8 for his last 22, w/ 4 xtra base hits, 7 RBI’s, he does have 6 K’s, but none in the last 2 games. He also has 3 walks. He has an OBP of .440, not too bad.

Unfortunately, last year was the year to go 10-152 to get Stephen Strasburg

Exactly, but would we have actually picked him, considering what it will take to sign him

Tulo
I know he was incredibly good his rookie year, and equally bad his sophomore year. Can anyone tell me how he was thought of as a prospect before he got to the big leagues? Did he overachieve in his rookie campaign, or has he underachieved last year and so far this year? It seems very confounding to me. Was he thought of as a franchise type player? I know he was a 1st round pick, just curious…….
underachiever right now.
Keep in mind he’s still relatively young, players don’t typically peak until they’re in their mid-20’s and Tulo’s just entering that period right now.
Very true.
I still believe in him. I think he has superstar potential. I just wonder if it’s all mental at this point.
by Business Socks on Apr 25, 2009 9:00 PM MDT up reply actions
Not all mental
I HATE his batting stance. 1) it’s not consistent 2) his left foot is about a foot too far forward…makes a closed stance that almost no one can hit out of a closed stance…which wasn’t his stance coming out of spring training…..he was jeff bagwell-esc then
Tulo wasn't bad last year
He was actually quite good the second half. His first half was just terrible

Well, I can’t say that, I’ve only seen three games reported by him.

Speaking of
another rumor was thrown out on the internet (and you know those are always accurate) that have Holliday to the Cardinals for Colby Rasmus.
I like the Cardinals
I wouldn’t mind seeing Big Daddy go to the Cards. And he’d definitely benefit from hitting in a lineup with Ludwick and God.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
me too
I grew up a Cardinals fan…and usually around July I have to go to my back up team’s for rooting interest…this year, it’s before the end of April
But I thought if the Cardinals wouldn’t trade Rasmus for Holliday when Matt was a Rockie…why do it now?
Is there some good reason
we put Matt Belisle in a one-run game?

Very true
but someone mentioned he is abusing his arms and this will catch up w/ him later in the season, and I just noticed that he did a good job resting all his arms tonight. He should now keep Troncoso out for at least 2-3 days, but everyone else got a day off. it worked out nicely for him.

The Dodgers are a good team
5 of the Rockies losses are against them. The Rockies will do much better against other teams.

Hate to say it
But that’s a losers’ attitude. You want to be good you have to beat good teams, especially at home. Bottom line. As a sports fan I don’t settle for anything but the best so this is disappointing.

I think Shifty is saying those things from a Dodger's fans perspective
but I agree w/ you, whats the point if we can’t beat LA, so we can get the consolation prize of 2nd place. I think even 2nd place is a little far fetched right now.

I blame it on Jimenez, poor pitching w/ 2 outs, he needs to put those innings away

He definitely didn't look good tonight.
Worked well in the BB category, though. It seems like the Dodgers were getting more of the pokes and breaks and line shots tonight. Many of our line drives kept getting swallowed by Kemp and Ethier.
