Hammel traded to the Rockies
It looks like it's pretty official at this point. Joe Smith reports on his blog:
Hammel said he has been informed by the Rays he's been traded to the Rockies. Though he was appreciative the Rays gave him opportunities, Hammel is looking forward to a fresh start in Colorado, where he hopes to be a part of their big-league rotation.
He figures to get some opportunity to crack the rotation this season, it will be up to him to make the most of it. Heading back to Tampa will be Aneury Rodriguez, as previously speculated
UPDATE: The report is coming down several pipes now, Tracy Ringolsby was one of the earliest to say that it's official.

I wish Hammel luck
He has pretty good stuff and was with the Rays organization for a long time. I’ll follow him as a Rockie.
Hello.
So who does he replace on the roster?
Morillo?
If so, I bet someone picks up Morillo fast. “You can’t coach speed,” as they say. Though you can coach control, except no one’s been able to do that so far with Morillo. I wonder what he’d do under someone like Dave Duncan.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
Yeah, Morillo's Gone
Word on the street is Florida’s interested in Morillo.
I like the prospects of this Hammel kid. This reminds me a lot of the Jason Grilli trade last year. That one worked out pretty well for the Rockies.
List of Prerequisites to be Denver Broncos QB:
1.Don’t EVER compare yourself to Elway, and we’ll make sure we don’t either. 10 years is enough time to heal.
2.Don’t make our ownership or management have to call YOU time after time.
3.Don’t piss off Mr. B, he signs your checks.
4. Try your best, we’ll support you if you leave 100% out on the field.
5.Neckbeards are REQUIRED as of 4.2.2009

I agree, Rodriguez is a much better prospect to be giving up than Simons,
But then again, I think Hammel’s a much better commodity coming back than Grilli was.
Do
you think Hammel can start? At the very worst, I think he gives the team depth in the rotation that they don’t really have (I can’t call Reynolds, Fogg, or Belisle depth at the current time with a very straight face).

this is exactly how I feel.
I think Hammel would be a solid starter. His upside is a bit below JDLR’s and quite a bit below Morales’ but his downside is much higher than either of those two and currently quite a bit higher than the Smith/Reynolds/Belisle group we’ve got. It’s a clear upgrade for the Rockies, if JDLR or Morales falter, we’re in a pretty good position now.
Realized
That I completely forgot to mention Hirsh – although he can be lumped into that group as well. I would be shocked if he could provide replacement level production at this point. I’d be curious if he could find success converting to a relief role like Bucky – seems like if he’s going to try it, now would be a good time while the team still has the ability to keep him at AAA.

Who would he start in stead of?
1) Cook? Nope
2) Uballdo Hair-B-There? Nope
3) Marquis? Well…I’m not sold on JM…but he’s our highest paid pitcher…so nope
4) JDLR? and his 5c head…that would kill him…plus, he’s not bad. YET..so nope
And that leaves: F. Morales. I don’t know Hammel well enough to say who is better, but I like Morales. He’s young, and improving.
Smith/Reynolds/Belisle/Hirsh in the Springs….wow, so not inspiring.

I was implying that he provided depth in that you stick him in the pen now to be a right handed version of Rusch, and if any of the 5 you mention go down/struggle then Hammel is your first option to replace them in the rotation rather than being forced to reach down into AAA for Smith/Reynolds/Belisle/Hirsh. I do have a little more hope for Smith right now than the other three, but he needs to be healthy.

Yahoo from the AP is reporting the trade
Here’s bizzaro-Mr. “I just want to help the team”:
“I hope to be starting wherever I’m going. That’s what I’ve always been doing and that’s what I want to do. I think i stated a pretty good case this spring. I’m healthy, can’t really ask for anything else.”

From Ringolsby's article:
“The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Hammel is expected to join the Rockies in time for their home opener on Friday against Philadelphia. As a result, the Rockies do not have to make a roster move until that time.”
I like how that worked out
Hopefully they can build up some value for these guys and recover most of the value given up in the first place in a trade.
most might be too much to ask for...
Even asking for some or any of that value back might be stretching it at this point because I’m not sure why the Marlins would part with talent for Morillo given all the freely available talent that just materialized. This does protect the Rockies in case of an injury in the first few days of the season, which is nice.
Hot dogs for everybody!
Well I look at it this way…. If the Rockies lose Morillo to a waiver claim, they get nothing. But, if they sell him to Florida for say $50,000… That should be enough to give everybody at Coors Field a free hot-dog and choice of beverage. Attendance goes through the roof because of the generous fan-appreciation shown by ownership….. And the Rockies go out and get Doc Holliday! Yep, Juan Morillo could net us our ace! Sheesh, I should be running this team.
Do you pay sales tax if you pay $50,000 to a team for a player?

Question?
Do they have room on the 40 man roster for Hemmel, or will they need to take someone off that roster.
Francis going on the 60 day DL solves that issue
As it allows the team to carry an extra player on the 40 man.
I'm excited
Though it’s no where near as good as watching the Rockies, at least it’s baseball!
McCann sure launched that ball as well. Nice start for the Braves to their season.

and my fantasy team
Don’t worry, I have Iannetta too, and don’t ask me how I got both. I think I’m playing with some baseball noobs.
Wow you must be
You might be the only fantasy player who has a legit consideration for starting a catcher at the utility position

It's good to see Myers shelled from a Rockies standpoint, too
His confidence should be shaky heading into Coors late this week.
Though not from my fantasy team's standpoint...
in my public Yahoo! winner league that is pretty darn competitive.
Weak.

Myers pitched for my opponent in PR H2H. So I'm happy too

We're going to lose 5 PURPS
from the list and gain…Jason Hammel, Matt Murton, and whatever Morillo fetches

I don't think
Murton counts anymore as a prospect. Hasn’t he played too many games for the Cubs/Athletics?

Oh I wasn't saying he was going to be "gained" as a prospect or PURP
I was just noting 1/6 of our PURP list is gone, and we’ll have three players in the organization that replaced them overall

This is totally unrelated to the Rockies
but I suppose it’s loosely related due to prospects in trades.
“Before the 2008 season, the Bucs had come close to dealing Bay and catcher Ronny Paulino to Cleveland for Cliff Lee, Franklin Guttierez, and Kelly Shoppach. The Pirates did not feel it was enough and killed it.”
That would be why the Pirates are never any good right there…
