You really haven't been to Purple Row in the last 36 hours...
Here’s the summary:
Franklin Morales and Jorge De La Rosa can either be great with their stuff, or they could be terrible with their mental lapses. With Greg Smith disappointing and still recovering from injury, the Rockies needed a pitcher capable of stepping in and replacing them should things go south. Jason Hammel is that guy. He’s a better pitcher than the guy the Dodgers named their fifth starter, he’s got better stuff than your sixth starter (who still frustrates me because I might be way wrong on him), he’s a better pitcher than the Giants fifth starter. He had a bad season last year in the AL East, he will have a surprisingly strong season this year in the NL West.
I think you may overlook the addition at your peril.
I don't doubt that he's got better "stuff" than Petit.
Petit’s stuff is weak, possibly excepting his changeup. He just knows how to use it.
I think you may overlook the addition at your peril.
That might be going slightly overboard, RG. It’s like all the attention that’s always lavished on the duel for the 25th roster spot. How often does that guy really make a difference?

In 2001 your fourth starter to open the season was Armando Reynoso
May he be forever remembered for the service he provided the Rockies.
Your fifth starter at the start of the season was Bobby Witt.
Your Jason Hammel was a guy by the name of Miguel Batista, you tell me if he made a difference.
So, you're predicting Hammel
to be your 3rd starter by the end of the season?

Given that it's currently Jason Marquis, does that seem like such a stretch to you?
I’m predicting Hammel to be a very important part for the Rockies in 2009. I’ll just leave it at that for right now.
Plausible.
I’ll give you that. I’d expect JDLR to be #3, though. Unless his mind totally melts down or something.

I'm sorry, I don't like the deal at all
I know I am seriousy in the minority here, but I don’t think it was worth it, it may have been worth Roe or another lesser pitcher, but I don’t like losing Rodriguez. It seems like we gave up a lot for a guy that was not going to be kept. The Rays never thought seriously about another offer because ours was well beyond what anyone else wanted to give up. Again I’ll change my mind if the Rox are actually competitive this year.
Also, whats the obsession w/ gigantic pitchers? When I see these extra large pitchers I just think how easily the mechanics can get off and it can be ugly.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
No need to apologize, divergent opinion makes for robust discussion...
I’m glad there are people who don’t like this deal speaking out.
I think the problem is
I just get too attached to “our guys.” Its hard to lose guys I have followed for a few years, especially before I ever even get to see them play in a Rox uniform. I really thought Anuery had potential too. I don’t like how they are making it sound like we lost a BP arm either, he has been a starter since day 1. I have heard they were considering a move to the BP this year, but he has not been a BP pitcher. I see the Tulsa rotation and I like it, but I would rather see one of those older guys, like Weiser move to AAA, and have had Rodriguez in the rotation in Tulsa, oh well.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I think you have to see Hammel as more than just a BP arm himself, and it helps
This is a guy who also started at every level of the minors. It’s very much like when we got Buchholz from the Astros as part of the Jason Jennings trade. At the time, he was seen by many as the throw-in, the pitcher with great stuff, once a highly touted prospect, but by then, while he was still young, he was too old to be considered a prospect anymore with questionable health and a poor MLB track record. Now he’s the most valuable component of that trade from the Rockies side. I suspect Hammel will drift more toward the starter side of value than relief, this is why I compared him to Batista above, but either way, he’s going to be very important to the Rockies this season and over the next two or three after that.
Isn't Buchholz
pretty much the ceiling, though? Seems like you’re counting on lightning striking twice. What if Hammel ends up being Jason Hirsh, rather than Buchholz?

You miss the point completely...
Hirsh was at the top of his game when he was traded to the Rockies, they were buying high, Buchholz and Hammel were/are at buy low points.
Don't think I'm missing the point at all, actually.
Whether Hammel was actually at a buy low point, or whether last year is going to be his average performance level, remains to be seen. Sure — I suppose Bobby Korecky could end up being Mariano Rivera, too. But I don’t expect that to happen.
All I’m saying is, don’t count your chickens.

I'm getting annoyed with this
What if Hammel ends up being Jason Hirsh, rather than Buchholz?
Two night and day pitchers, with night and day abilities (92 mph biting FB compared to a 90 mph flat FB is a gigantic difference) and now you’re bringing up Bobby Korecky? A 30 year old career minor leaguer that has exactly one MLB caliber pitch as a comparison point? You are wasting my time on this.
It’s becoming apparent that perhaps you’re the one counting chickens here, good luck.
Not really worth arguing anymore.
It’s a case of wait-and-see.
