Fielder's choice

On Yahoo they show ‘reached safely on a fielder’s choice’ for Yorvit, but no error. Is it possible to have a non hit that is a non error?

by fatheadX on Apr 8, 2009 4:04 PM MDT reply actions

yes

as a fielder’s choice. most often the lead runner is out, but it’s still a fielder’s choice if he is safe. Either way, it counts against the hitter’s batting average

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Apr 8, 2009 4:05 PM MDT up reply actions

Yep

Mental errors don’t count as errors and a FC with no out recorded is considered a mental error.

(There’s a more technical explanation, too, but I’ll spare everyone.)

Thanks

by fatheadX on Apr 8, 2009 4:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Here's the deal

Reached safely on a fielder’s choice means the defense went to another base first. Typically, this is the scoring in botched double plays, or when a really good slide comes in at 2B or something like that.

When scorekeeping, you can never assume the double play. So if they fail to get the runner at first on the back end of the 4-6-3 (or any other attempted “normal” DP) for just about any reason, you rule it a FC 4-6-3.

So for example, on that 4-6-3, EYJ is tearing up the line, and the runner from 1st was running on the play. Well, the hit-and-run was clearly botched if the DP is still an option.

So because Dexter Fowler was running on the play, the out at 2B is gonna be the hard one, and Dex’s slide beats the toss to the SS, who still makes the throw to 1B, but misses EYJ by half a step. No error was committed, you almost need to just credit the runners.

and that’s a big if…he’s shoulder heals (and I don’t think that happens this year, as it usually needs a year from surgery..an he didn’t have surgery)

is he too old to come back? and put it together?

Yes. Absolutely.

He could still turn things around...

Same with Reynolds. Having this many guys at AAA who could possibly emerge in the second half is a very good thing.

by Rox Girl on Apr 8, 2009 4:31 PM MDT up reply actions

I hope you are right

I think the organization really needs one of those 2 to be a major league pitcher (even better if both..just odds against both)

"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009

by Redhawk on Apr 8, 2009 4:32 PM MDT up reply actions

I'd add Hynick to that list of possibilities at this point

One of those control RHP’s needs to develop into an above average pitcher that can eat up some innings, I think you’re right about that.

by Rox Girl on Apr 8, 2009 4:33 PM MDT up reply actions

and

Hirsh was almost a power pitcher at one time. :(

I...

I have more hope for Reynolds than for Hirsh. Hirsh appears to be inside his own head.

AND

Hirsh all but tore his rotator cuff. I understand it was as close to a tear, with out tearing…as you can get.

"Suck it monkeys, the Rockies will win this year", Rox Girl 1-11-2009

by Redhawk on Apr 8, 2009 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Hirsh didn't throw hard

when he first came up to the bigs w/ the Astros.

What happened between being all-world in AA and AAA and the Majors has always been a big mystery to me. Someone with Hirch’s stuff since he made it to the big leagues couldn’t have been that successful in the minors. He was the Uball/Chacin of the Astros’ system: a “can’t miss” pitcher. But he did miss.

If he’s had an undisclosed injury, he’s had it a long time.

Of maybe he turned into an Ankiel-like head case, but with symptoms other than wildness. I’ve never been able to figure it out.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

We don't need a fifth starter until later in the month

This allows the team to complete the trade for the pitcher from Tampa. It will work out for the Rockies to have as many quality arms as they can get this year.

Nice thing is...

The rest of the lineup is making up for the middle which is lacking a little right now, that home-run breakdown by lineup position is kind of funny the top and bottom have homers the middle is missing
