But when you're referring to the Rocky Mountains
you never use a singular. You would say “Mt. Evans is one of the Rockies.” You would never say Mt. Evans is a Rocky." At least, it seems like that’s the case to me. For the mountains, “Rocky” is always an adjective, “Rockies” is a plural. So for the sports team, a singular has to be created. And it makes more sense to me to use “Rockie.” Why, I don’t know. But it does.
And I have now officially given this more thought than necessary.
There's no such thing as thinking about something too much.
It’s just that EVERY OTHER PLURAL that ends in “-ies” is “-y” in the singular (at least, I can’t think of any exception).
Here’s an idea: since the team is named after the Rocky Mountains, and all the Rocky Mountains are Mt. Evans, Mt. Elbert, etc., Chris Iannetta is neither a Rocky nor a Rockie. He is Mt. Iannetta.

You're right about your first paragraph.
But as far as I know Rocky is never a singular. It’s not even a noun. It just becomes a plural noun when we drop the “Mountains” from the phrase.
And on your 2nd paragraph, I’m actually surprised no one has ever thought of that before. At least, I’ve never seen Mt. Player Name being used before as a nickname. At least not for the Rockies. The Nuggets did have Mt. Mutombo.
I totally blanked on that.
But that’s the only time, I think. You never use it for an actual mountain.
