Sunday Rockpile:

Woody Paige makes a living bringing less insight and humor into a sports discussion than many if not most Purple Row users do for free. How does that make you feel? I I mean, sure he might be correct about a needed managerial change, but really, what differentiates this paid column from the comments below it?

In that vein:

DENVER POST, FIRE WOODY PAIGE! HE IS AN EMBARRASSMENT TO THE CITY AND YOUR RAG!

See Woodrow, that's how you do it. Use your freaking Internet tools to make your rants all huge and everything. Oh wait, you don't have the editorial control to do stuff like that. Tool.

Peter Gammons says the Rockies want pitching back for Spilly or Murton, something the Red Sox weren't willing to give.

Aaron Cook has a stiff back.

Garrett Atkins will be spending more time on the bench.

I'm still working on a long rant of my own, for which today's quiz was a precursor, but thought I might put up a Rockpile in the meantime. Unfortunately, I just won't be able to make it to Pittsburgh today, but I will be in Detroit next weekend.

At least Paige

knows there is a Rockies team in Denver and he’s seem to care over the years that they suck. Most of the media seem to put the Rockies some where below the Colorado Rapids and above the,Denver Outlaws about on par with the Colorado Mammoth. BUT…Paige’s article was very amateurish and I’m BEING NICE.

He GETS media credentials, and the bloggers here DON"T? Go FIGURE

See…I’m so past this stage ….I’m all the way to Step 5 and Acceptance. I’ve been there since I blew up 3 weeks into the season. Anger is so Step 2…and lots of steps to go to get better.

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 9:56 AM MDT up reply actions

Realistically,

what young pitching could the Rockies get in return for Spilly or Murton? If pitchers such as Clay Buchholz or Michael Bowden are what the Rockies are asking for, I don’t see a deal to be made anywhere.

I think Dan has jumped off the deap end

How can you expect to trade one of our many average 2B prospects for a 4th outfielder and then flip him for one of the best pitching prospects in the game, a guy who has already thrown a no hitter and has a 1.03 ERA in AAA this year.

Maybe they would do it for Seth, but not for Matt or Ryan.

by mkorpal on May 17, 2009 10:27 AM MDT up reply actions

Not Seth

26, apparently LF-only, good but not great hitter.

Gammons didn’t provide much info. I doubt the Rockies were asking for a one-for-one swap. Perhaps the Sox inquired about a few players, and the Rockies expressed interest in Buchholz or Bowden. This would require a package or a better player from the Rockies, and things didn’t go any further.

Spilly probably garners some interest, but he’s 29. I’d have to think that limits what the Rockies could receive in return.

by FooMan on May 17, 2009 10:38 AM MDT up reply actions

Pretty much

And he isn’t too bad with the glove either.

I've been looking at the efficiency of the Rockies lineups...

The best hitters should be in the 1-3-4 spots in the lineup, with the best OBP in the top spots and the best SLG in the middle. The 3 spot should contain the best overall hitter and the 1 spot should be the best OBP batter.

This is the ideal lineup I would like to see with the players rankings in OBP/SLG/OPS on the team:
1. Smith 1 / 2 / 2
2. Tulo 5 / 6 / 5
3. Hawpe 2 / 1 / 1
4. Doom 4 / 3 / 4
5. Helton 3 / 4 / 3
6. Stewart 8 / 5 / 6
7. Spilly 6 / 7 / 7
8. Barmes 9 / 7 / 9

This is the lineup that started a couple nights ago..

It shows the best hitters were on the bench or spread towards the bottom of the lineup:

1. Fowler 7 / 8 / 8
2. Tulo 5 / 6 / 5
3. Helton 3 / 4 / 3
4. Atkins 10 / 10 / 10
5. Hawpe 2 / 1 / 1
6. Spilly 6 / 7 / 7
7. Doom 4 / 3 / 4
8. Barmes 9 / 7 / 9

by Charlie77 on May 17, 2009 10:59 AM MDT up reply actions

Ok, but why is it relevant for a trade?

Why would a team want to spend a lot on a 26-yr old leftfielder who is a good but not great hitter? Or do you think he’s somehow become a career .995 OPS guy?

by FooMan on May 17, 2009 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

He's a platoon hitter, but he's the harder side of the platoon to fill

right handed batters like Murton and Spilly are easier to come by. I agree with you, though, that there’s little chance he gets those pitchers from the Sox, either, but he does have more value than the other two.

by Rox Girl on May 17, 2009 3:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Hawpe used to be in the same boat...labeled a platoon hitter

Smith could shrug off that label if he were given the chance too – He has a HR and 4 BBs in 8 PAs vs LHP this year

With Atkins

He can platoon with Atkins and Spills can learn a new position, Third. This will become permanent and Atkins will be DFAed.

This is hypothetical and completely unrealistic. Please ignore this.

O'Dud

goes on to say, that everyone needs to be accountable and to shift that accountability to some other places (I think he was infering firing Hurdle) then that takes away from each persons accountability.

But he want’s stability, and loyalty to his players which means no one is actually held accountable.

He was talking about stat efficiency..

and how Shane Battier is rated higher by NBA statheads then his counterparts. He was trying to compare that to MLB sabermetrics. Just like Doom has a low batting average, but his OBP and SLG is high enough to make him one of the best Rockies hitters.

I can see the correlation he was making, especially since the Rockets are playing Game 7 today, and many area fans are paying attention to the NBA playoffs for obvious reasons…

Thanks for listening

It’s a bit intimidating, knowing you’re going on a broadcast. I don’t want to sound too rehearsed, that’s obviously bad radio. But me saying “um” is also bad radio. I was floundering during the second question, and had to just think of something to say.

Apparently Jack Corrigan could tell I knew what I was talking about, I was INCREDIBLY flattered to hear that (I didn’t speak with Jack, but Chris gave me the headsup later on).

If there is a next time, I hope we can have some more back-and-forth, because just getting a few sound bites didn’t give me much room to say important things, so I kind of had to go with my gut.

My gut apparently says “um”.
