by Chrysicat on May 17, 2009 1:31 PM MDT up reply actions

uhhh yea i guess

but the fact that we’re up 3 doesn’t make it any better of a decision, especially when a 3 run lead is hardly reassuring with our pitiful pen.

by Narcoleptico on May 17, 2009 1:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, but every game is results-oriented

But one thing I’ve learned in poker is you can’t get results-oriented in your decision making. Unless there is a 100% correct decision every time, there is variability in any individual event result, which does not make the decision made correct or incorrect. The right decision is “right” not because of the eventual result in that instance, but because it most often likely leads to that result.

by free7694 on May 17, 2009 2:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Wait...

bringing in youth that you know won’t win 60 games is going to draw fans?!?

by Chrysicat on May 17, 2009 2:29 PM MDT up reply actions

It's the selling of the "hope" and "future"

people love hope. I’m not saying it will pack the house

Right now, this team is on pace to lose 90 games which hasn’t been done in awhile as it is.

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:31 PM MDT up reply actions

So you want to guarantee the first 100-loss season in team history?

That’s one thing we can hang our hat on…we’ve never dropped a century…

by Chrysicat on May 17, 2009 2:32 PM MDT up reply actions

and the difference is?

what’s the difference between 90 loses, and 100 loses? It’s about selling tickets, and it’s like watching a minor league team if the Rox go young. It’s not so much about winning then.

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:34 PM MDT up reply actions

You're not going to sell tickets to average non-sabermetric, non purple row Joe

By dumping all the recognized names and replacing this year with EY, Chacin, and CarGo. The average joe who doesn’t follow the minors won’t keep buying tix just because we dump everyone. Not gonna happen.

by Mondogarage on May 17, 2009 2:35 PM MDT up reply actions

They aren't going to buy tickets anyway

the ones that don’t know…won’t matter. Again, I’m not saying it will fill the park…but the way they are going now….certainly won’t either

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:37 PM MDT up reply actions

I am with you overall

A team that is only going to spend so much has two choices…perpetual mediocrity, or try to rebuild occasionally in an attempt to build a team capable of contending. I’d prefer the latter.

If they do decide to scrap this year and rebuild, I don’t see the point of bringing up CarGon until much later, and definitely not Chacin. And they should probably send Fowler back down, let him work on things w/o accumulating service time.

by FooMan on May 17, 2009 2:41 PM MDT up reply actions

It won't, but that means you can make some changes and not others

DFA Atkins, option Corpas, try to trade Baker when healthy, but no way is Chacin ready, and EY2 really isn’t, either. Maybe try to trade Murton to bring up CarGo, but Hawpe’s our best bat right now.

And dump Hurdle, but with zero plans to extend Tracy past this season. There’s not much you can do for this year, but plan on blowing up the staff in the offseason. If we’re real lucky, the Yanks fire Girardi, and we can hire him.

by Mondogarage on May 17, 2009 2:41 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm not trying to save this year

this year was over a month ago.

And yes Hawpe is our best bat. Like A-Rod on the Rangers, they finished last WITH him…they can finish last with out him.

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:43 PM MDT up reply actions

And yet the Rox are no better if you trade him

And his contract is okay. You don’t get rid of your best bat for the sake of doing so. The Rangers finished last with A-Rod…and a $25m a year contract that hamstrung them from getting better. Hawpe’s on a decent contract not holding the team back.

A point I guess I'm leaving out

is I think the “average Denver sports fan” is actually quite knowledge able, AND they actually attend games. They know when the team is bad (see Rockies and this years Avs) and they don’t show up. They know when a team is good, and I think they know and understand rebuilding.

They won’t buy tickets to bad. They MIGHT and I think WOULD (see that Woody?) buy tickets (or more tickets) to see a future and know that the owners are trying to fix things.

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:41 PM MDT up reply actions

Pirates a good example

They’ve been bad year after year w/o ever looking like they were on an upward trend in some sort of development cycle.

The Rockies at least showed that GenR more or less worked once, and could sell that approach again. I think fans would find that preferable to a sea of .470 years…

by FooMan on May 17, 2009 2:44 PM MDT up reply actions

But not during midseason

You can’t market GenR2 without a full offseason to do it. Anything else is just raising the white flag. May as call it the Colorado Frenchies.

by Mondogarage on May 17, 2009 2:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Well

“AND they actually attend games. They know when the team is bad (see Rockies and this years Avs) and they don’t show up.”

This is less a case of being knowledgeable, and more a case of being fair weathered. Really. The Broncos are flat out bad and they still sell out every game. Denver got exceedingly lucky when the Avs moved, because they were primed to be good at that very time. Denver sports fans are too often informed by hacks like Paige. They won’t buy tix to a bunch of players they don’t know. Unless those players are Broncos. I hope Broncos fans choke on their 5-11 season this year.

I might add, the Rox still have a higher winning .pct than that.

by Mondogarage on May 17, 2009 2:45 PM MDT up reply actions

This.

So very this.
Everything but the Broncos, Denver fans are nothing but frontrunners.

by Chrysicat on May 17, 2009 2:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Yup, look how fast they bail

Every time the Nuggets have one bad season after a playoff run.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

by Mondogarage on May 17, 2009 2:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Well there was a reason I didn't put

in the Broncos. It’s the NFL, it’s 8 games, and their history goes backs further.

But yeah, I think the Denver fans are actually very good knowledgeable. Yes, there is a bunch of fair weather/front runners, but really Denver is a place where people really WANT to go to games, and buy tickets and talk sports.

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:48 PM MDT up reply actions

"Goes back further"

A whole 7 years further than the Nuggets, who do have only fair-weather fans. I get annoyed with Broncos exceptionality, but it’s going to keep up forever no matter what people do…while the other teams will have to win, or be in danger of getting sold out from under us…

by Chrysicat on May 17, 2009 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

There is no real danger

of a team getting moved from Denver (besides the minor league sports like the Crush). There isn’t a market that is bigger then Denver, that needs a baseball team (Portland is slightly bigger, but they have no stadium). Same with the Nuggets and the Avs (well Av’s actually, but there are other teams in worse financial shape, like Phx, Miami, Nashville)

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:53 PM MDT up reply actions

The Broncos history of mediocrity goes back further than the Rockies

Seriously, they’ve been no better than the Rox since Elway retired, and except for the very end of his career, the team was rarely more than pretty good.

If people “really WANT” to go to games, they will continue to do so.

Denver’s really a football town and nothing else UNLESS your team’s in first place. Look how fast the crowd bailed the Avs. Ten years of dominance went for naught the last couple years. Nevermind the Rox, the Avs’ long run of playoffs, cups, etc, entitled them to more support than the last two years…but as soon as they became non-competitive, everyone jumped ship.

That’s the same for the Rox and the Nugs. At least I can now pick up scalper tix for half price to Rox games.

by Mondogarage on May 17, 2009 2:52 PM MDT up reply actions

there ARE places where

even the winners don’t draw that great, like Dallas, LA, Atlanta to name a few. I think Denver is a better city for sports then those. (and I think it’s because that Denver is actually the right sized, and fans can actually get to stadiums fairly easily)

by Redhawk on May 17, 2009 2:56 PM MDT up reply actions

I can agree with this

Dallas and Atlanta are terrible sports towns, even more frontrunning than Denver. And LA is pathetique.

But Denver can’t even begin to hang with Philly, Boston, even Detroit. It may actually be slightly better than average, but only slightly.

yeah, I reluctantly agree…And it can hurt guys getting pulled up too early esp. pitchers…

But go ahead and let stewey and dex have their rookie year OJT with 600 AB’s and give us a reason to hope

RE: Paige

Ok, maybe he’s a hack. Maybe he’s even a “tool” but he’s right. This team is amazingly mediocre. Going on track record alone Paige’s insight to the team has been/is more accurate than the purple shaded apologists here.

The difference is that Paige has been nothing but "Rockies fail"

Even when Holliday, Atkins, Hawpe were coming up and the potential was being realized. The truth is, Paige 1) knows squat about baseball, 2) can’t stand anything possibly taking any thunder away from his beloved and betrothed Donkeys, and 3) has an ax to grind with the Monforts.

The fact that this year’s team is pretty bad does not alter any of the above.

I have defended Hurdle, but I would be shocked if he makes it to Atlanta as the manager

and really shocked if he makes it past the road trip. Some of his problems have been players, no doubt about that, however not pinch hittting for Jimenez in the 7th was enough for me to say he’s should be done, that was the straw for me.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

by smokinRox on May 17, 2009 3:01 PM MDT reply actions

I had absolutely no problem with that.

Whoever’s up for that AB is being asked to bunt by 30-out-of-30 managers, and pitchers work more on bunting in spring than position players. With a 3-run lead, no outs and runners on 2B and 3B, nobody’s going to PH and tell the batter to swing away…so you’re hanging him for a decision that Torre wouldn’t have made differently. If you want a ‘dumb Hurdle’ moment, try ’putting Corpas in in a pressure situation in Bot 7".

by Chrysicat on May 17, 2009 3:08 PM MDT up reply actions

I feel the opposite

I have no problem w/ the Corpas decision, we are already behind, we have no one pitching well in the BP other than Street, he can’t pitch every inning, so who do you bring in? Grilli pitched poorly last night, and hs been inconsistent, there really wasn’t much of a choice.

We have 2 on nobody out and a chance to really put the game away, why bunt there? If you do bunt, why not Fowler who has a chance to beat it out for a hit or force a mistake w/ his speed.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
