Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

Wednesday Pebble Report: Greg Smith starts again for Modesto

Colorado Springs, W 8-5: Mark Bellhorn went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and three RBI. Carlos Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Eric Young collected two hits, scored three times and stole his 22nd base. Ryan Mattheus allowed a run on a homer in the ninth.

Tulsa, L 0-10: Jhoulys Chacin was knocked around last night for six runs (four earned) in four innings. He allowed eight hits and walked three batters. He did, however, strike out eight. Jon George allowed another four runs. Recently signed pitcher Michael Nix (no relation to any other Nix we may know) pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one.

Modesto, L 4-5 in 15 innings: Greg Smith made his second rehab start, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four. For the next 5 1/3 innings, Edgmer Escalona, Matt Reynolds, and Craig Baker held Visalia to no runs and four hits. Randall Taylor threw the final four innings, allowing the winning run on a single that was set up by a double and a groundout.

Lars Davis went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and his first two stolen bases. Charlie Blackmon (9) and Hector Gomez (2) each stole a base. Brian Rike struck out four times in six at-bats.

Asheville: No game scheduled.

Chacin

Those scouts who said last year that “he’s a fourth starter” looking a bit smarter this year. Not dominating AA like some other top pitching prospects in the division. Hopefully he can turn it around.

Edgmer Escalona...

I love this guy. Solid in the past, solid in Spring Training with the Rockies, and so far this season: 1-0, 2.08 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 19 K’s in 17.2 IP.

?

Should Greg Smith be getting knocked around by Single-A bats? That seems worrisome.

Well, he IS a contact pitcher...

…so in a way, we should always be worried about him. However, I doubt he’s fully “game-ready” at this point.

Deduno pitched decently today

he did walk 5 in 7 innings, but only gave up 2 hits and struck out 6. 7/5 GO/FO, so all in all not bad, but he threw way too many balls. I would like to see him looked at for a BP spot.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
