Field of Dreams

Instead of watching the Rockies tonight I felt like I needed to be reminded why I watch and love the game of baseball so much.  I watched Field of  Dreams and by the end I was in tears, and I don't cry at movies that often. I was surprised about all the memories that came back of playing catch with my Dad and going to games with him when I was young. My Dad and I don't get along on too many things but baseball has always been a common ground that we could bond over.  I know that there are a lot of issues with our team right now, but tonight really helped me to see that Baseball has been so ingrained into my life that it won't matter (too much) if the Rox are not the greatest team. What will matter is that I will still get the chance to cheer, complain, and root for my team along with my Dad. So the next time you feel like you are getting burned by the Rox I suggests popping in a copy of the classic "it will remind you of all that was once good". Sorry if this seemed a little emotional I felt like I just had to write something about it.

It's one of my favorite movies

I remember when it came out, and it got rave reviews, and everyone said it was so great. i had a part time job tending bar, and i was talking about the movie with a few of the patrons, and the ending. I thought it was lacking something, and it was a little silly. I got the heart of the movie, the telling of baseball stories and how they become legends as they are passed down, and the magic of baseball especially on a summer’s evening as the day fades away (I always think back to sitting on the back porch listening to Cardinals games on the Radio with my father). But the ending I thought was just off..missing something I told the customers.

All 3, who were much older then I was at the time, stopped, and looked up at me. One finally said, “Your father is still alive isn’t he.” I said, “Yes, why do you ask?”. He said, “Because won’t fully get this movie, until your father has passed”.

Sadly, it wasn’t a few years later, that my father did pass, and quite suddenly too. And now I can tell you, that I cry every single time I see the ending of that movie. They were right. And I think Field of Dreams ending is amazingly poignant.

anyway…thanks for sharing. I love the magic of baseball. It’s part of what makes this season of the Rockies so hard to take for me. I’ve never had a summer with out baseball..and right now, I’m feeling I just might have one.

I'm right there with you.

Sadly, my dad is no longer with us and everytime I see that movie, I just lose it at the line, “Dad, wanna have a catch?”.

Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?

I agree

This is an excellent movie and it does remind me of everything I enjoy about baseball. While I am still frustrated with the Rockies and the circumstances and situations surrounding them I still love baseball and that will never end. If I had people to play with I would do that over watch the game any day. Thanks for the post because this is exactly what a lot of people need right now, a reminder as to why we all enjoy baseball.

Field

I grew up less than 10 miles from the field. It’s one of my favorite movies. The field still draws its share of visitors, 20 years after the movie came out.

My favorite part is the conversation about Ty Cobb :)
