Game #40: Aaron Cook vs. Kris Medlen
Colorado Rockies at Atlanta Braves, May 21, 2009 5:10 PM MDT
For more about Kris Medlen, who makes his MLB debut against the Rockies this evening, check out this article from Baseball Intellect.
The lineup I think speaks for itself, the only saving grace is that the hitters being used do seem to be at least close to their most efficient order. We will see if Hurdle's faith in Atkins and Barmes and Spilly as starters will pay off and start saving his employment.
Go Rockies!

Maybe there will be pork in the treetops come morning.
Equally possible….

I’m a long-time fan of that show, and the “pork in the treetops” line is probably my favorite zinger in a play full of them. Nice work!

Denny Stark had some crazy AAA numbers once, James McDonald was an ace in Vegas
I’m a lot more interested in what he has and how he uses it than the numbers he’s put up. In this case, he’s not quite as good as those figures make him appear, but of course, the Rockies have been making this kind of pitcher look like a Cy Young candidate anyway.
Your last point is a lot of what I'm getting at
I realize minor league numbers don’t always translate, but he was also rated as 98 and 99 by the Cube.

Spilly-absolutely, Barmes looking better and better and Atkins...
hope he gets better so we can trade him
I don't know that Fowler is a better leadoff candidate than Spilly.
Fowler’s been struggling lately. I want the kid to succeed and all, but you have to wonder if maybe he could have used some time in AAA.
But it is nice to see Ianetta in a more appropriate spot.
No one else fits the spot right now
The way Hawpe and Helton are hitting you want them back-to-back and Atkins doesn’t deserve 5 or 6. Dreamy’s coming around lately and has earned the spot.

Actually, about the only thing we haven't done is give up a 20-spot
/crap we’re giving up 25 tonight, with the 20 all coming in 1 inning
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
We also haven't gotten no-hit.
So clearly that means both will happen in the same game.
(Disclaimer: I don’t actually believe that will happen.)
It'd be best to combine them
Since at least we can try to be economical in our agony.
/yeah right
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
Still haven't gotten no hit

I just find it more conveniently valued because it seems downtown and around LoDo you can either stay at a cut rate dive or have to pay out the eyeballs for a room. I’d rather stay down there and then make day/night trips into the city.

I used to think Baylor, but...
You’ve got to wonder wtf is up with the Rox bats under his tutelage (sp?). I like Hurdle about as much as a zit on my rump the day before heading to the nude beach, but he’s got a point about Tulo being a spaz in the wrong situations. I think Baylor needs to get that under control b4 he can be considered for manager. Jim Tracy, tho…

Barmes has been considerably more patient this year.
Our old complaints aren’t quite as true anymore.
alright, maybe I'm just making that up
The numbers don’t bear it out. Or maybe it’s just been the last couple of weeks when he seems better by comparison since everybody else is going downhill

it seems that he has been laying off the away breaking ball that he struggles so much with.

I'm kinda worried about what Hurdle's idea of penitentiary measures
is going to do to Tulo.
Ah hell, maybe if Hurdle loses the players too, they’ll be happier if he gets fired…?
Yeah okay. Who knows.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
So let me get this strait
Hurlde benches Tulo for being to aggressive at the plate, so now when Tulo is at bat, he’s watching everything as it comes right down the middle? Great way to treat your Hitters Hurdle
I really think that was one of Hurdle's stupider moves
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.
i see that tulo's day off
has helped so far

Hurdle and Tulo...
If Hurdle would just shut up and let Tulo figure it out on his own, this would not be a problem. The more you tell Tulo, the more he starts to think, and the more he thinks, the harder he grips the bat, the harder he grips the bat, the more he sucks.

Question...
Maybe it is just me…but does it seem like insidetherockies.com has lost some of its luster in the last couple of weeks? Maybe its just hard to be positive when reading and writing about the Rockies.

I had noticed too
it seems like there’s less material there than when it started..

I feel the same way
I attribute it to the fact that deep down I know they can’t sustain this beyond one game. Thus the lack of euphoria from a win
I'd enjoy it more
if I thought it would fix anything. But we already know this is what happens. We win big, look good, and then can fall absolutely on our faces in 24 hours.

Poor sportsmanship by the Braves.
That’s cheap. Especially in the final game of a series in which they had their way with us plenty.
I love Greg Reynolds and I may be slightly ashamed to admit it.

WHEEEEEEEE!
I know it doesn’t mean much, but getting a win still feels a heckuva lot better than losing by 1 run.
yes!
we start doing this more often, and all of us in Denver would get a break from Red Sox Nation. Sometimes, the bandwagon is your friend.
Hey that was kind of nice.
Too bad we’ll lose a one-run game in excruciating fashion tomorrow, just to put the universe back to rights.
