Game #41: Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Rick Porcello
Colorado Rockies at Detroit Tigers, May 22, 2009 5:05 PM MDT
The Rockies will use the DH for the first time this year, a duty that's falling to Seth Smith. As the Patrick Saunders post indicates, Don Baylor has rejoined the team after his bout with pneumonia. You could read the lineups there, our widget hasn't updated them yet, but I'll be back to post them here after I finish cooking some dinner.
Go Rockies!

The Tigers are hot
It’s a bad time to draw them — they just swept Texas, which had been playing well.
It’s too bad they dumped Sheffield. He was a great readon to root against them, but now it’s hard to find anyone to intensely dislike on the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera’s about as good as it gets, and who can root against Dontrelle Willis?
Playing the Tigers on the road after getting blown out in 3 of the last 4 & with Hurdle still managing. It’s enough to give me an anxiety disorder like Dontrelle.
No records in the last 10 years should count.

You mean the Rockies? They won two of the last four games…

Too bad we don't have Carroll any more.
Or even a healthy Baker. Our options at third are pretty painful these days. Still, Stewart can at least play defense.

I'm leaving for dinner in about 30 min.
It’s a choice between good Mexican food & great margaritas

Hope there are enough Rowbots to hold the fort while I’m holding a cold glass.

Then there's a chance
you could see Hurdle live in his last game as mgr
I give O’Dowd’s vote of “confidence” about a week, depending on game results.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
I tried making the America's Test Kitchen slow cooker version of Coq Au Vin
Which sounds fancier than it really is. I think I might as well have done the real thing, though, because the smaller amount of work involved was not worth the payoff. They use soy sauce to try to substitute for some of the salty fond taste you get from browning the meat first, but the soy flavor wound up overwhelming that of the cheap bottle of wine I used.
The secret is
to drink 2 glasses of the GOOD wine after your first serving, and the second serving tastes much better.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
That's good stuff
Have you tried the Shiner Anniversary 100 special brew? It’s good, too.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
That's 2 Shiners I haven't tried
but I love the original regular Shiner…so don’t need to go much further than that.
The original regular Shiner
which used to go for about $3.99 a six pack, is now known as “Shiner Blonde” (with an “e”) & costs $7.99 or more. That’s called brilliant marketing, I think.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
Wow
Pepsi Throwback (which is Pepsi with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup) is cheaper than regular Pepsi… you would think that Pepsi could make a killing off the people who have heard all the bad things about HFCS.
Ok that made me look
not the “blonde” which IS good…but Shiner “Bock” pretty much standard in southern Oklahoma and west Texas
I've go back & forth between the Bock/100 special brew
and Dale’s Pale Ale/Old Chubb from Oskar Blues.
We’re transitioning from Texas to Colo. in the next couple of years,
so both baseball & beer choices must be made.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
There are places here
that have Shiner Bock. Grizzley Rose, Flying Dog (the Texas Tech Alumni club watch parties). And some places when you order it they look at you funny.

Oh, and why is Smith the DH? I’d prefer Hawpe DH but I guess Hurdle doesn’t want to mess with his rhythm.

Nobody ever denied that Porcello has major league stuff. I won’t be surprised at all if our offense does nothing.

Sometimes I think Atkins is still trying to ground out when he's on defense.
But if he grounded to himself, he’d probably make an error and be safe at first.
Great inning for Ubaldo
this is going to be a low scoring pitchers dual I’m afraid.
(like most games in Tigers Stadium I think)
I think they imploded Tiger stadium this year
Kind of like GM, it had seen better days.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
Actually, they rank 9th in park factor for runs.
I don’t really like that stat, but it does give you an idea of where offense is being produced. Similar to Coors, Comerica yields more doubles and triples than average.

An inconsistent offense?
who would have thought that about the rockies?
And Tulo Ks on the high heat. He has to stop swinging at that pitch.

Yep, and that is why he got benched
you just cannot swing at pitches like that, especially after a walk.

How many pitches did Ubaldo throw?
…and if it isn’t 120, then YTF didn’t Hurdle let him pitch this inning?!?
His velocity is dropping
He was only throwing 94-95 last inning compared to the previous 6 when he threw 97-100

Grilli is done
We need a better outing than that, but who is going to face Cabrera? I would think Grilli is a decent option.

another ground ball would be great here. Throw the sinker and get out of this.

Atkins
has to make that play. Even if it WAS a smart play by Polanco.

Or Tulo throws to third
and atkins to first for a DP, that way he doesn’t throw across his body.

You're kidding me...
Hurdle punishes Manny for two GBs that were outs and could easily have been DPs?
He needs to be fired, now, alright…
Weird forced hook by Hurdle...
and Grilli must feel he was shown up by the manager. It was a hook for a platoon reason as Corpas was brought in to face Cabrera. Hurdle is behaving badly with his players and they are probably pissed.
Forgot to mention
that even the TV guys were shocked with Clint pulled Grilli.
Shades of Baylor's 'pen management...
..,if we’re gonna see Baylor-type mismanagement of the pitching staff, can we please have original-flavour?
Lined to Dex
inning over. That could have been worse, or better.

Somehow a one-run game where we pulled to within one run
in the last inning doesn’t feel quite as awful as one where we gave up the lead or were once tied or within one run for multiple innings.
It's also been a while
since the Rockies even played a 1 run game. It was nice to see from the pitching stand point.

So, Barmes would have doubled?
I don’t see how you can say Barmes would have for sure done any better than Stew.
I disagree
Grilli could have pitched better, but he needed groundballs. Corpas, even while struggling, gets ground balls and that is what he did. Everything happened the way it should.

I don't know
I’d put some of it on the players for not scoring earlier. Like maybe guy on third one out.
damn that sux.

Which raises a question...
…if Dex has screwed up so many times from ignoring the 3B coach, is it possible that maybe he can’t be taught and we need to go in another direction?
How do we know he ignored the 3B coach?
Did they say that and I missed that? I thought that was just speculation.
There's a reason I said 'if', but...
…if he didn’t get a stop sign on that play, then Dauer is a moron…
The Tigers PBP guy said
that Dauer wasn’t making any signal at all and that Dex was three strides from 3rd base when the ball was fielded in LF. Sounds like Dauer went to sleep.
I don't know why you would jump to "he can't be taught" from this
The speed and precision at the MLB level is quite a bit beyond what Dex saw in his half season at AA. It’s still a learning process but you seem super eager to give up on our young players sometimes.
Hurdle just defended Helton's getting thrown out at the plate..
