Game #41: Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Rick Porcello

Colorado Rockies at Detroit Tigers, May 22, 2009 5:05 PM MDT

Next Game

The Rockies will use the DH for the first time this year, a duty that's falling to Seth Smith. As the Patrick Saunders post indicates, Don Baylor has rejoined the team after his bout with pneumonia. You could read the lineups there, our widget hasn't updated them yet, but I'll be back to post them here after I finish cooking some dinner.

Go Rockies!

The Tigers are hot

It’s a bad time to draw them — they just swept Texas, which had been playing well.

It’s too bad they dumped Sheffield. He was a great readon to root against them, but now it’s hard to find anyone to intensely dislike on the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera’s about as good as it gets, and who can root against Dontrelle Willis?

Playing the Tigers on the road after getting blown out in 3 of the last 4 & with Hurdle still managing. It’s enough to give me an anxiety disorder like Dontrelle.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

Too bad we don't have Carroll any more.

Or even a healthy Baker. Our options at third are pretty painful these days. Still, Stewart can at least play defense.

I tried making the America's Test Kitchen slow cooker version of Coq Au Vin

Which sounds fancier than it really is. I think I might as well have done the real thing, though, because the smaller amount of work involved was not worth the payoff. They use soy sauce to try to substitute for some of the salty fond taste you get from browning the meat first, but the soy flavor wound up overwhelming that of the cheap bottle of wine I used.

The original regular Shiner

WHY did Hurdle DH Smith?

and not Hawpe??? Has anyone asked? Just arrived, but saw Hawpe miss another diving catch opportunity that led to 2 runs. Seth Smith or Spilly in RF would have caught that. Hawpe should be the DH. Is Hurdle this dense?

I don't think they would have

Hawpe was positioned a little to deep for Polanco, as I assume those two would have been as well.

2 down, 1 to go!

Let’s do this, peop—oh, right, bottom of the order…

by Chrysicat on May 22, 2009 7:26 PM MDT reply actions

Of the last three batters

Iannetta’s the only one who hasn’t been on base this game.

by holly96 on May 22, 2009 7:28 PM MDT up reply actions

that’s one thing about hard throwers – if you can catch up, it goes a long, long way!

by fatheadX on May 22, 2009 7:27 PM MDT reply actions

ouch!

I thought it got the earflap, but it was the shoulder

by fatheadX on May 22, 2009 7:29 PM MDT reply actions

Stewie PHing for Barmie?

I realise you’re playing matchups, but Barmes kills fastballs!

by Chrysicat on May 22, 2009 7:30 PM MDT reply actions

And Ian

has not had much success this year at all. 7 HR but only .198 BA

BAD DEX!!

You shouldn’t have swung until you had two strikes against ya…

Ball game

Dexter Ks again. Nice try and an excellent game.

Somehow a one-run game where we pulled to within one run

in the last inning doesn’t feel quite as awful as one where we gave up the lead or were once tied or within one run for multiple innings.

by holly96 on May 22, 2009 7:36 PM MDT up reply actions

True

But it seems like it’s been awhile since one of those last gasp wins. I love those.

by fatheadX on May 22, 2009 7:37 PM MDT up reply actions

It's also been a while

since the Rockies even played a 1 run game. It was nice to see from the pitching stand point.

Hurdlefail...

…this is all on his mismanagement in the 8th…

by Chrysicat on May 22, 2009 7:35 PM MDT reply actions

Oh, yeah, and the 9th...

…I remain convinced that Barmes could have at least gotten Q in…

by Chrysicat on May 22, 2009 7:36 PM MDT up reply actions

So, Barmes would have doubled?

I don’t see how you can say Barmes would have for sure done any better than Stew.

by holly96 on May 22, 2009 7:37 PM MDT up reply actions

I disagree

Grilli could have pitched better, but he needed groundballs. Corpas, even while struggling, gets ground balls and that is what he did. Everything happened the way it should.

Yeah

I don’t think the management was awful, either. The pitchers just didn’t execute perfectly, except for Embree (and who knows if leaving Corpas in would have put us behind even further).

by holly96 on May 22, 2009 7:39 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't know

I’d put some of it on the players for not scoring earlier. Like maybe guy on third one out.

by fatheadX on May 22, 2009 7:36 PM MDT reply actions

I agree.

Hurdle makes some of the decisions because the players are not performing.

The basketball game looks lame. Guess I’ll have to get something done around the house now. Maybe there’s a movie on the DVR….

Good night all.

Bad baserunning

cost a couple of runs.

by DieHardRox on May 22, 2009 7:42 PM MDT reply actions

Which raises a question...

…if Dex has screwed up so many times from ignoring the 3B coach, is it possible that maybe he can’t be taught and we need to go in another direction?

by Chrysicat on May 22, 2009 7:44 PM MDT up reply actions

How do we know he ignored the 3B coach?

Did they say that and I missed that? I thought that was just speculation.

by holly96 on May 22, 2009 7:46 PM MDT up reply actions

There's a reason I said 'if', but...

…if he didn’t get a stop sign on that play, then Dauer is a moron…

by Chrysicat on May 22, 2009 7:48 PM MDT up reply actions

The Tigers PBP guy said

that Dauer wasn’t making any signal at all and that Dex was three strides from 3rd base when the ball was fielded in LF. Sounds like Dauer went to sleep.

by GoRoxGo on May 22, 2009 7:51 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't know why you would jump to "he can't be taught" from this

The speed and precision at the MLB level is quite a bit beyond what Dex saw in his half season at AA. It’s still a learning process but you seem super eager to give up on our young players sometimes.

by Rox Girl on May 22, 2009 7:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Hurdle just defended Helton's getting thrown out at the plate..

“if you dont’t go from third on that, the 1B throws to second and you wind up in the rundown there:”
