Game #43: Jason Hammel vs. Dontrelle Willis
Colorado Rockies at Detroit Tigers, May 24, 2009 11:05 AM MDT
Coming off their second one-run win of the season, the Colorado Rockies look once again to take the rubber match of a three game series (for just their third series victory), this time against Dontrelle Willis (1-0) and the Detroit Tigers. Willis will try to prove that his stellar last start was not a fluke against the Rockies. Meanwhile, Jason Hammel (0-3), the victim of poor defense behind him recently, looks for his first win of the season.

I’ve gone in and edited them as much as I could, but that’s been happening a lot to me lately, though it went away for a week or so…I haven’t gotten around to emailing the bug people

It's not a bug problem.
It comes out fine for me (I just corrected both of them). It’s as if someone is editing them and messing up.

Are you sure?
More often than not in past weeks, they insert with a two column heading frameshift. I’m not sure what Jabbs and I could be doing wrong since you just pick and insert.

Are you inserting

Normally, canning Belisle would be a good thing
But Fogg offers absolutely nothing better. In fact, to judge from ST, he’s even a step backwards.

by Silverblood on May 24, 2009 10:37 AM MDT up reply actions
I disagree, based solely on just HOW bad Belisle has been for us.
I think even if Fogg underperforms, it’d be a stretch if it became that bad.
by Greg Stanwood on May 24, 2009 10:38 AM MDT up reply actions
I donno about that
Fogg’s velocity on his fastball has been reported to be WAY down this year in the Springs. I’m not sure how this helps the Rockies at all.
Oh, and we get to give 2 more players away as the Rockies try to pass 2 more through waivers to make room for Fogg and Phillips.
I have heard rumblings that they will be moving Baker to the 60 day DL for one of them.
by Greg Stanwood on May 24, 2009 10:43 AM MDT up reply actions
Looking at the 40 man
Baker to the 60-day makes sense for Phillips. I assume Belisle gets DFA for Fogg.
Therefore...
… I am assuming we will move Baker to the 60 Day DL (he just visted a hand specialist, and may have gotten bad news), and DFAing Matt Belisle. That’s all speculation, though. But we wouldn’t lose any players.
by Greg Stanwood on May 24, 2009 10:45 AM MDT up reply actions
Plus, Fogg has a good history with us.,
They may be hoping that means more than nothing (which it may not).

No inside info.
Because most of the work I do is at my computer, I have my tabbed browser with all of the main Rockies writers open all the time. Therefore, I get alerted immediately when something is posted. Just close monitoring, not inside info.

Personally I think the big question of the day
is will Hurdle be the Manager of the Rockies after the game? I don’t know, but I’d say if the firing doesn’t happen to day….it doesn’t happen all year, and Hurdle and O’Dowd both go at end of the season.
I still
think O’Dowd gets extended at the end of the season…but that is just a gut feeling.
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
If we win
we will have had a winning week, albeit just 4-3. Kind of an odd time for the manager to get the can after beating one of the best home teams in MLB? Assuming we win of course

by Andrew T. Fisher on May 24, 2009 10:54 AM MDT up reply actions
Agreed.
If Hurdle is fired, then that was the plan all along to do it now, not based on recent performance.
by Greg Stanwood on May 24, 2009 10:55 AM MDT up reply actions
Firings tend to happen on the Road
where there are less media to ask silly questions. So I’m just assuming it would be today, as the Rockies come back for a nice home stand.
if the Rockies lose
and go 3-4 will that make a difference? Is Hurdle’s job really going to be about today’s outcome? That doesn’t make sense either.
No it doesn't really
It would just make the move pretty hypocritical…that they’ve been preaching patience, and that they expect things to turn around. In the big picture, it makes no difference, but I’d still be shocked if he gets the axe immediately following what would be the biggest series win of the season by far.

Dex is starting to re-adjust
That’s a good sign. I guess we can hold off on sending him down and bringing up Carlos. Although I think it’s time for Ian to go down. Bring up Ortmeier?
If we made a move, I'd petition for Mike McCoy.
Ortmeier is not a 3B, and I’d rather not have to have Atkins there every day right now.
